-- 5/16 ROH on HDNet Hits & Misses

ROH HITS

Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. Kenny King & Rhett Titus: This was a non-title match, so the cynic in me expected King Titus to pull out a victory; I was pleasantly surprised. This was an excellent match from top to bottom. Kevin Steen was his usual aggressive and remarkably agile self, El Generico still sells better than most, and King Titus have a huge upside. Kenny King is going places, mark my words. He has undeniable charisma on the microphone and looks completely at ease with himself. His ring work is excellent at that, and ROH would be wise to continue featuring the man. Rhett's act is hilarious, and he does well incorporating his gimmick into his wrestling without being detrimental to the match quality.

The action was back and forth, with long patches of El Generico taking the heat from both King and Titus. The champions got in several high spots, though. Steen landed a swanton bomb and his signature front-flip leg drop, still stunning in his agility for a man that size. Also notable was a couple consecutive spots from Steenerico which saw Steen nail King with a cannonball in one corner followed by a coast-to-coast front-flip dropkick from the generic luchador to Titus in another corner. This was followed up with their finishing combination, the package piledriver into a brainbuster. The match put over the champions strong while King Titus never looked weak in defeat. They kept the match competitive and the crowd was hot as hell for the whole thing.

Hogewood's attempts to get Prazak to say "ole!" were priceless, "no habla español, David?" Their chemistry with each other is getting better by the week and I find myself enjoying some of the commentary as much as the matches. More on that in a moment.

Brent Albright vs. Cladio Castagnoli: Continuing their feud and picking up one month from when we last saw them do battle on HDNet, the opening contest of this week's show started off the proceedings perfectly. Both men are towering, Castagnoli with a leaner build compared to Albright's heft. Their match-ups thus far have been satisfying, if a little inconsistent. I appreciate the classic dirty finishes, each setting up their next contest perfectly. The appearance of Nana and Ernie Osiris to distract Albright was effective and allowed Colt Cabana to come out and make the save, setting up some possible future feuds in the process. Also, when Albright hit the crowbar after a head scissors I about lost my mind. That spot was fantastic.

ROH MISSES

Dark City Fight Club (John Davis & Cory Chavis) vs. Grizzly Redwood & Alex "Sugarfoot" Payne: Yet again we are treated to a squash match to put over the DCFC. Their moveset and power in the ring is quite impressive; they have a bright future ahead of them. But having only seen them in squashes on HDNet, I am getting tired of it. If I'm supposed to view them as a serious threat, I need to see them take on some serious teams. I'm sure this will happen in time, but it needs to sooner rather than later.
