DEROSENROLL'S BLOG: 5/23 ROH TV on HDNet showed definite improvement

By Mike DeRosenroll, Torch specialist

PWTorch VIP members have first-look access to all of Torch ROH specialist Mike DeRosenroll's latest ROH-related blogs in the VIP Forum. His blogs are posted under the M2_Jay screenname.

Last week, I complained in this blog that the ROH show on HDNet lacks adequate follow-up on events from week-to-week.

Lack of follow-up weakens the show because, when something seemingly important happens and never gets talked about again, it makes everything on the show feel inconsequential.

Having made this complaint, let me now give credit where it is due for this week's show. This week, they followed up on the two main developments from last week.

(1) Last week's show ended with a post-match sneak attack by the American Wolves (Eddie Edwards & Davey Richards w/Shane Hagadorn) on Kevin Steen & El Generico after Steen & Generico had just won the main event tag match. The heels put Generico through a ringside table.

This week, the show started with an in-ring segment following up on that. Richards cut a promo on Steen & Generico, then Steen & Generico rushed the ring. The Wolves got away, but their manservant, Shane Hagadorn, was too slow and the faces got a measure of revenge by putting Hagadorn through a table. Then it was announced that next week's main event would be a table match for the World Tag Team Titles between Steen & Generico and the American Wolves. Good logical booking.

(2) In last week's opener, Prince Nana and "Dirty" Ernie Osiris interfered to cost Brent Albright his match against Claudio Castagnoli. Colt Cabana then hit the ring to save Albright from a three-on-one post-match beat down. This week, they ran a replay of last week's interference and gave Albright and Cabana a promo to vow revenge. Again, good logical booking.

Now, here is where I still think the show could improve on its follow-up. (Sorry if this seems like nitpicking, but I nitpick because I want the show to be as good as possible.)

(1) The follow-up on the Wolves vs Steen & Generico angle would have been helped a lot by a replay of the Wolves putting Generico through the table. It's good that it was mentioned a couple of times, but a replay would have added to the emotional impact of the angle, helped put heat on the Wolves and helped fans who didn't watch last week catch up. If time was a factor, even a replay in a box in a corner of the screen during Davey Richards's promo would have helped.

(2) While this week was a major improvement in terms of following up on angles, I'd still like to see big moves talked about more. Like TNA Impact, ROH on HDNet just seems to take big spots in matches for granted. Since ROH's main selling points is its in-ring action, they need to do all they can make what happens in the ring seem important and talking about big moves (along with replays) after the fact is an easy and effective way to do that.

The move of the week this week was a spectacular dive by Kenny Omega out of the ring and onto Jay Briscoe and Kenny King on the floor. It was never mentioned again this week, but I hope they at least show a replay next time Omega wrestles on TV to help get him over.
