ABSURDITY OF IT ALL - WWE Smackdown 5/5: La Demostracion de Rey Mysterio, Umaga Tries Some New Holds, The One Section of WrestleMania 25 that No One Watched

Interesting set-up with the ladders for the "Cutting Edge" segment. Jeff Hardy still makes me cringe during some bits of his promos. Somebody here was going to take a spill.

Will Jericho take off Mysterio's mask? Will Jeff Hardy win the title? And what happened to Ed Helm's tooth in "The Hangover?" (I think I might go see that movie.)

Did Jim Ross take a shot at TNA's King of the Mountain match with describing the ladder match at Extreme Bingo as "not at all fancy?"

In doing some research online, it appears that one Eminem was wearing a Rey Mysterio mask while shopping recently.

Here was something else on the internet: Kid Rock’s performance was edited out of the WrestleMania 25 DVD because the two sides could not come to terms on proceeds from the DVD sales. If anyone bought the WrestleMania 25 DVD, is this true?

Even if it was left in there, I'm betting that most people just skip the entire Kid Rock/Miss WrestleMania bit when watching the WM 25 DVD.

While John Morrison has been held up in a flight pattern with Shelton Benjamin (after the hint was dropped that he might start a feud with Chris Jericho), tonight R-Truth got a surprising amount of promo time and love from the WWE.

Chris Jericho's mannerisms are great (looking to the left and right whenever the crowd cheers about how much a hypocrite Jericho is, his catchphrase "ask him!," etc.). The main knock about Jericho's promos is that they can get too predictable ("all of these mindless sychopants..."). Not sure why Jericho vs. Mysterio has the "I'm going to take Mysterio's mask off" bit to it, but whatever.

The MVP of tonight was Rey Mysterio. From the attack on Chris Jericho to the truly great main event, it wouldn't be a stretch at all for him to be entered in the main event picture again.

I watch Umaga matches hoping to see him do that Samona Drop where he catches the other guy in the air. Not found here. What was found here is that Umaga tried out some new submission moves, which were much better that the dreaded nerve hold.

C.M. Punk lifting Umaga up for the GTS was impressive.

I didn't watch the Divas match. It's not going anywhere.

Hopefully this Khali vs. Ziggler feud is over. Khali didn't really need a victory over a promising young star like Ziggler. Khali will always have a job in WWE because (1) he's as tall as a skyscraper and (2) he has starred in movies. That' s enough for Vince. Sure, this feud gave Ziggler air-time, but in the end it means nothing.

Main event was probably one of the best Rey Mysterio vs. Edge matches. Loads of innovative offense here. The match, as well as the show itself, was pure money. While the Raw side of Extreme Rules is extremely lacking, the Smackdown side (sorry, ECW) is strong with Edge vs. Jeff and Mysterio vs. Jericho.

Smackdown Verdict: A Little Absurd
