ROH TV HITS
Jerry Lynn (champion) vs. Austin Aries vs. Tyler Black vs. Bryan Danielson for the ROH World Championship: This is how you put on a television main event. Hell... any main event. There weren't any "storylines" leading into this contest, just angles. Good, solid wrestling angles. Jerry Lynn is the old veteran who's "still got it." Austin Aries is the cocky, arrogant wrestler who feels that the title is his birthright. Tyler Black, the youngest of the four, is riding a new wave of momentum after his push was somewhat squandered last year. And Bryan Danielson is the former ROH champion who is out to prove he is still the "best in the world." You take good promos and interviews from all four men, weeks of seeing them in various match-ups proving their credentials and acumen, and add Ric Flair to the mix? That is one potent brew.
The match was stellar from top to bottom. I've been staying away from the spoilers, so I didn't know the results from this set of tapings - the winner of the four-way was a mystery to me. This made watching it that much more enjoyable. The multiple nearfalls actually had me sweating, wondering who, if anyone, would dethrone Lynn. I am a fan of all four, with Aries and Danielson being my two favorites. I was tricked into actually believing Aries might win the belt with how strong he was portrayed in this match. When he was whipped into the ropes only to jump out of the ring and take a victory lap, I laughed like I always do. It's little things like that which make him such a refreshing and convincing heel. Lynn really does still have it, putting it all on the line in an incredibly athletic contest. I was amazed at not only some of the spots he and other performed in this match, but how smoothly some of the more intricate combinations were set up. I must say, the four-man headlock and chin-breaker was completely ridiculous. But from bell to bell, this was a satisfying main event which showed why ROH is the best wrestling product on television today. My only true complaint was the blatant disrespect shown by many of the fans towards Lynn. I was there when he won the belt from McGuinness in Houston; I wasn't happy about it but he is a good worker and at least deserves some common courtesy. To chant "F-U Lynn" is beyond me.
Colt Cabana & Brent Albright vs. Claudio Castagnoli & "Dirty" Ernie Osiris: I am a huge Colt Cabana fan. He is one of the most entertaining workers in the business today. He was let go from WWE because they claimed they had nothing for him; this is baffling. How you can fail to utilize someone as inherently charismatic as Cabana is hard for me to comprehend. He exudes charm and, well... fun. Cabana is one of the few guys on the independent scene who is the total package of being able to make his matches entertaining while still wrestling. The "Smack Talk" promo before the match was brilliant, enough said. Not to gush over Colt, as I like both Brent Albright and Claudio and their feud has been excellent so far. I could really care less about Osiris, although he is being used well in his role as Nana's lackey. The match was a blast, with Cabana showing off his comical arsenal of pinning predicaments and Albright doing what he does best: kick ass.
ROH TV MISSES
Ric Flair interview: Ric Flair's involvement with Ring of Honor and the business as a whole right now is controversial, with people weighing in on both sides regarding his return to working. I was a proponent of his ROH work, and I do think it accomplished what it needed to despite being cut short. He gave a tremendous rub to ROH at a crucial time for the company, and he did his job adequately if not excellently.
His interview last night was awful, however. I had to listen to several minutes of Flair telling us - for the thousandth time - why he is "the best there ever was." First off... I know, Ric. Not only that, but at this point it just comes off as tired and lazy. Rather than talk about the product with sincerity, he's too busy talking about his own accomplishments. I don't need to hear it, and that was the one blight on an otherwise perfectly executed main event angle.
Bobby Dempsey vs. Sal Rinauro: Boring. Pointless. Dempsey's power moves didn't even come off that great during this match. At least the body block in his last match looked like a freight train. Last night... not so much. And while they may be trying to portray Bobby as a power-house, a two-move comeback for the win? Unbelievable, even against Sally Boy.
