UNDER THE MICROSCOPE - TNA Impact 7/9: So long Rudy Charles, Abyss should be dead, TNA Mobile lied!

By Curtis Shanks, Torch specialist

Welcome to the TNA Impact edition of Under the Microscope. We're here to review all those little observations and tidbits you may have missed. This is not a detailed recap of the show, but a review for those of you that saw the show but didn't actually "watch" it.

After last week's show, we know that the Mafia wants Jeff Jarrett, Kevin Nash wants more money, and everybody wants a tag title shot. But what else is there to notice? Let's see what we can spot. Cue the opening pyro.

The mystery of who is Suicide appears to have subsided, as the X Division has suddenly lost interest in the man under the mask. We get a sit-down interview about song lyrics this week, and find out that the voice certainly is not recognizable. But if you visit the TNA website often, you may have noticed one similarity. Suicide's roster profile lists him at 5'10" and 232 pounds. While neither of these are the actual measurements of Daniels or Kaz, there is a former roster member who has shared those exact statistics. When Curry Man was part of the TNA roster, he was billed as 5'10" and 232 pounds.

Black Snow (Booker T) is back on commentary, as he and Scott Steiner sit in for the MCMG and Beer Money match-up. Don West proclaims that the two have more tag title reigns than he can count, to which Booker reminds him of the 14 total he held in WCW and WWE. While we looked at all the titles involved in the tag division last week, let's take a closer look at the 14 Booker has held in his career.

The first ten were when Booker was part of Harlem Heat in WCW with his brother Stevie Ray. He later went on to hold the WCW and WWF tag titles with Test, followed by WWE runs with Goldust and Rob Van Dam. You could add three more to his total if you include reigns with Stevie Ray from the old GWF. While 14 tag titles is a great accomplishment, it's still far from dominance by Booker. Of his 14 major tag titles, only four runs lasted longer than five weeks.

Angelina Love's Knockout title reign is over, as Tara defeats her this week to win the title. Tara not only has her first wrestling title in over five years, but has joined select company with her win. She joins Gail Kim on the very short list of wrestlers who have held the Women's Title in both WWE and TNA. The list will likely stay at two names for the time being. Aside from Kim, there are no other former TNA women's champions on WWE's roster. TNA has one other woman on their roster who has held the WWE version - Jacqueline. Jackie seems like a long shot for a KO title run though, as she has been reduced to a backstage role with the company as of late.

Wrestling companies are always searching for top talents who can fill a role on TV in many different ways. Wrestlers, managers, interviewers, commentators…there can be plenty of spots to fit in for someone looking for work in the business. But TNA may be in need of help of a different kind. After the departure of Shane Sewell in May and Rudy Charles this week, the company is now down to three referees (Earl Hebner, Slick Johnson and Andrew Thomas). Charles was a surprising departure, as he had been a referee with the company since Day One. Charles was the senior referee in TNA, and even has a match under his belt as he tagged with fellow ref Andrew Thomas in a loss to Booker T earlier this year. TNA may stick with a three-man crew, as three refs for two hours of TV is still better than the WWE ratio of eight refs for six hours of TV. Maybe the TNA higher-ups are starting to watch the show and are punishing their referees for all the blatant distractions and shenanigans that allow every match to end in a DQ-style finish.

The Dr. Stevie-Abyss saga continues, as Abyss visits Stevie's office for payback this week after Stevie's kidnapping of Lauren last week. I believe this is the sixteenth kidnapping we've seen in TNA this year where nothing materializes the following week. Abyss gets the upper hand on Stevie, but is suddenly gasping for air and convulsing within seconds. Dr. Stevie reveals that he spiked Abyss's water with a drug, Atracurium.

Atracurium actually is a neuromuscular-blocking drug, and has effects similar to what we saw Abyss suffer this week. But if he actually did take the drug, Abyss will not be seen on TV next week...or any week to follow. According to a CBS news story from a few years ago, a woman was convicted of murder after poisoning her husband with the drug. The drug is used as a muscle-relaxer, but the story states that it is only used in surgeries for patients who are on life support. Without life support, the drug is lethal as it will paralyze the heart and lungs.

The bait-and-switch is all too common on wrestling TV shows, but the one TNA pulled tonight was just downright boggling. TNA mobile sent out a text this afternoon stating "Who will be a new champion? Three TNA Titles are on the line with Angelina Love, Kurt Angle & Beer Money all defending their titles." Even if you casually watched the show this week, you know that was far from the case.

Beer Money was in action, albeit in a non-title match vs. the Guns. Angle was also in action facing Mick Foley and Jeff Jarrett in the main event. But this match was not for the TNA Title, as stated by Mick Foley during the show-opening promo. Angelina Love did defend her KO title, but only after Tara defeated Velvet Sky and challenged her to a match. This show was taped a couple weeks ago, so there was no reason for TNA to lead everyone on with a blatant lie. I'm all for building a show in advance, but not through misleading text messages.

Sting was back on the mic tonight after nothing more than a lights-out run-in to close the show last week. Out name-drop counted caught 15 instances of Sting saying "Joe" during their confrontation. While this is still a pretty high number to put up with while you are watching a wrestling show, Jeff Jarrett eked past him tonight. During the show-opening segment, Jarrett delivered 16 "Micks" to edge out Sting for the top spot. Mick Foley came to play as well, as that same opening segment saw Foley drop nine "Jeffs" into his promo time.

Numbers crunched harder than an unprotected chair shot to the head: John Cena, Triple H, Kurt Angle, Jeff Jarrett…it seems like we see the same names in all the big matches in WWE and TNA over and over again. We beg and plead for mid-card talent to be elevated to the top part of the card to give us new blood and fresh match-ups, but it never seems to happen. It's true the main offenders are always end up in those top spots, but what do the numbers say about wrestlers in top spots?

Since the beginning of 2007, there have been 25 different wrestlers who have been involved in a match for either of WWE's top two titles (WWE or World Heavyweight). Looking at TNA's World Title, 19 different wrestlers have been given the opportunity to reign supreme. The numbers can be inflated due to both companies reputation for giving us multi-person title matches, so how many have been involved in a one-on-one match-up for a World Title in that time?

WWE has given us 17 different faces in a World Title match, while TNA has given us 12. Of course, it's hard to measure success solely by World Title matches, as they are just a prop used for storylines when you break it all down. Another way to measure success would be involvement in a PPV main event. Looking at WWE and TNA, they are neck-and-neck in that category. We've seen 20 different wrestlers in both WWE and TNA who have wrestled in the top spot on a monthly PPV since the start of 2007.
