By Lee Stevens, Torch specialist

Thank you for joining me as we put Raw "Under The Microscope." This is not a complete recap of the show. This s simply a closer, sometimes offbeat, look at Monday's broadcast.

Hello, Orlando!

The Orlando crowd seemed to be in a good mood from the start of the night, perhaps no fan as welcoming as the one holding up the sign saying "John Cena, U can't C me, but U can call me" followed by the person's phone number. I won't repeat the number as I'm sure the person has already received their share of phone calls since Monday night, but using whitepages.com, it's a cell phone number based in Kissimmee, Florida.

And if I had to make a prediction, it will soon be available as the person currently holding will probably have it changed. Right after they rip up the sign.

It's not easy being Green

Seth Green continued the trend of successful guest hosts, although he obviously brought a different element than Donald Trump and Ted DiBiase. As new friend Triple H introduced him by running through his credits, we had a nice connection with WWE past, although you may not have caught it at first. Talking about Green's work, The Game mentioned that you may know him from "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," as he played Oz for the better part of four seasons. He worked with Sarah Michelle Gellar, who had the title role, and is married to Freddie Prinze, Jr. who recently ended a short stint as a writer for WWE.

We've got fun and games

A guest host also brought a guest appearance from mainstream music as Green walked to the ring with Guns N' Roses's "Welcome to the Jungle" playing in the background. This was a nice flashback for old people like me who can remember Hulk Hogan being accompanied by "Eye of the Tiger," "Free Bird" welcoming The Fabulous Freebirds, and Junkyard Dog bringing a chain and Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust" to the ring.

The cost of licensing prompted WCW and WWF to record their own theme music. ECW still held out during this time and Sandman rarely entered the squared circle without a kendo stick, an adult beverage of his choice, and Metallica's "Enter Sandman." Interestingly, ECW was allowed to use it for live events, but not DVDs, so on official ECW videos, they used a cover version of the song.

North or South?

Triple H hopes to rally from one of the most vicious beatings of his career as he prepares for Night of the Champions. He'll be fine after Randy Orton ... I'm talking about Dakota Fanning. The child actress had her way with The Game during the clip from Green's show "Robot Chicken." Since we won't have too many chances to take a closer look at Fanning on WWE TV, let's look through The Microscope. Dakota was actually born Hannah Dakota Fanning, the daughter of former professional tennis player Joy Arrington and former minor league baseball player Steve Fanning. Her grandfather was Rick Arrington, who played quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles in the early 1970s and her aunt is former ESPN reporter Jill Arrington.

Don't slouch

The visual of the "economy sized" Seth Green standing next to the "super sized" Triple H provided an interesting contrast. One that was not lost on Randy Orton as he accepted the challenge from both of them, insisting he would handle anything "no matter how big or how pathetically small they are."

For the record, he is listed as 5'4".

Colonoscopy

As Miz confidently strutted to the ring, he continued his verbal abuse of the Colon family, including his usual mispronunciation of their name. Seeing Primo, he questioned "one half of the Colons. Where's the other Colon?" This prompts the obvious question, if Carlito isn't there, is it technically a semi-colon?

At the movies

Michael Cole chose to use the first name for his pun of choice as he proclaimed "It was indeed Carlito's way tonight." "Carlito's Way" was a 1993 film starring Al Pacino and Sean Penn. One of the more famous lines from the movie is "Here comes the pain," which was used by former WWE superstar and current UFC Champion after his successful UFC 100 title defense, Brock Lesnar.

It certainly wasn't the only movie reference of the night as Triple H harassed Seth Green by wondering why he would want to "hang out with Dudley Do-Right here," talking about John Cena. "Dudley Do-Right" was released in 1999 with Brendan Fraser starring in the title role, with Sarah Jessica Parker playing his girlfriend Nell.

Green's movie history was referenced several times, including the most expected big screen reference from The Big Show as he imitated Dr. Evil from "Austin Powers." "Advice will cost you one million dollars."

The doctor is in

Dr. James Andrews made his annual appearance on WWE TV as we saw photos from Edge's recent surgery. Andrews is well known for his work with professional athletes and for wrestling fans, he has helped Batista, Rey Mysterio, Triple H, John Cena, and many others.

He is often credited with Tommy John surgery, the common procedure named after the famous pitcher, and he does perform the procedure, however it was Dr. Frank Jobe who developed the technique.

...and he's staying

Chris Jericho quickly turned on now injured partner Edge insisting that he always knew he was weak and proceeded to list Edge's injury prone qualifications, including a broken neck, a torn pectoral, and the most recent Achilles surgery. Edge suffered the neck injury in 2003 and underwent surgery with Dr. Lloyd Youngblood (Doctor scorecard update: 3) and was out for nearly a year. He suffered another setback as he broken his hand just before his planned return. His torn pectoral in 2005 kept him out of action, but not out of the ring as he used this time to host "The Cutting Edge" and promote his new nickname of "The Rated-R Superstar."

Grandpa, tell me about tag teams again

If you thought a Randy Savage DVD was unlikely, WWE is following it up with something almost as odd. With the apparent lack of interest from WWE with current tag teams, WWE bosses seem to be more intrigued with former pairings as the latest video offering features 50 of the best on "Allied Powers." The promo for the DVD features D-X, The Hart Foundation, The Hardy Boyz, The Dudley Boyz, The Von Erichs, The Freebirds, The Rockers, Rock-n-Sock, The Rock-n-Roll Express, The Midnight Express, and many others.

The most interesting inclusions for me were Billy & Chuck, Miz & Morrison, and MNM. My memories of Billy & Chuck are strictly of the controversy and perhaps that's the point of their inclusion. Miz & Morrison are surprising only because they are so recent. It certainly doesn't mean they aren't deserving; I just prefer my history to be more historic. MNM actually have three championships to their credit and were a part of one of the more brutal Ladder matches, so perhaps it's just a matter of learning to appreciate more recent teams rather than always going to the "Road Warriors" for my list. Speaking of Hawk & Animal, it appears that they used footage of them as "Legion of Doom" for the DVD. Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard appear as "Brainbusters" and Billy Gunn appears as a member of "Smoking Gunns," "New Age Outlaws," and "Billy & Chuck."

How do you want to be remembered?

During the Chavo Guerrero vs. Hornswoggle match, our favorite Leprechaun used the "back of his front" to humiliate his opponent and the announcers remembered the move as a "stinkface." They failed to credit the man who made the move popular, Rikishi. Of course he wasn't the only person to perform the move. Actually, people with more attractive stinkface equipment handled the move as Kat and Terri Runnels competed in a "Stinkface Thong" match at 2000's Summerslam. The Kat, with Al Snow in her corner, defeated Runnels, who had Perry Saturn along for encouragement.

Where's the bucket of chicken?

If you failed to plug a product on Monday's Raw, you were one of the few to be unsuccessful. Seth Green and Triple H promoted a special episode of "Robot Chicken" before the first match. Later, Chris Jericho helped Green share the information on his Roller Skating Tour. Sick Puppies, who contributed a song for "Extreme Rules" appeared in the crowd and coincidentally, they had copies of their CD ready for the camera. Not to be outdone, Adelitas Way, responsible for the theme song for "Superstars" received the same treatment. Plus, you can add it an update on DVD numbers for "12 Rounds" and John Cena.

As for next week's guest hosts, ZZ Top is currently on tour with Aerosmith, while Aerosmith is providing the theme song for this year's Summerslam.

Look for an advertisement on Carlito's apple very soon. (Caldwell's Note: Washington Apples, Granny Smith, or Fruit of the Loom?)

The people have spoken!

Thank you to everyone who voted in this week's Raw Microscope poll. The majority of you wanted to take a closer look at Night of Champions, which means that either you are excited about the upcoming pay-per-view or you really don't care about robots or chickens.

The Night of Champions isn't a new concept as it used to be the name of an important bodybuilding event held each year in New York. The top five finalists in the event qualify for the Mr. Olympia competition. In 2005, the name was changed to New York Pro.

As for the WWE version, it actually debuted under the name "Vengeance" in December of 2001, replacing the name "Armageddon" which was dropped due to sensitivity about the name in relation to the recent 9/11 tragedy. It remained "Vengeance" until 2007 when it was dubbed "Vengeance: Night of Champions." The Vengeance was eliminated in favor of the current name.

After the initial year it was moved from December to July and for three years it was the July feature pay-per-view. After jumping up to June for four years, it moves back to July this year. In 2003 and 2004, it was exclusive to the Smackdown brand.

If you don't remember much from Vengeance: Night of Champions, you had a bit of a distraction as it was held the weekend of Chris Benoit's double murder/suicide. Benoit was originally scheduled to face C.M. Punk at the pay-per-view, but Johnny Nitro (now Morrison) filled in and won the title.

From the first Vengeance in 2001 (the event which would become The Night of Champions), Christian, Edge, William Regal, Jeff Hardy, Matt Hardy, Big Show, Kane, and Chris Jericho remain in WWE. In fact, that was the night Jericho defeated The Rock and Steve Austin in the same night, an accomplishment he is only too happy to remind us all. Superstars from that first event who have moved on include Albert, Scotty 2 Hotty, Billy, Chuck, Rob Van Dam, and TNA World champ Kurt Angle.

To compare WWE from just one year ago, John Morrison and The Miz were the WWE Tag Team Champs and they defeated Finlay and Hornswoggle to retain their titles. Matt Hardy held the U.S. Championship, while Kane carried the ECW belt into the night. Cody Rhodes fought in a tag match with Ted DiBiase, but they were not partners, at least not at the start of the night. Rhodes was still teaming with Hardcore Holly at the time, but turned on Holly to join DiBiase and win the belts.

Chris Jericho held the Intercontinental title, which isn't far from the same this year, but he was escorted to the ring by Lance Cade. Mickie James was the Women's Champion last year and will fight for another belt this year. Edge was the World Heavyweight Champ and Triple H beat John Cena to retain the WWE Title.

Unfinished business before the event on July 26 includes naming a partner for Chris Jericho (I would have thought Dolph Ziggler except he may have other business that night, what about The Miz?), finding an opponent for Kofi Kingston (Big Show?, Add Evan Bourne for a Triple Threat Match?), getting an opponent for Michelle McCool (Melina rematch?), and finalizing a match-up for Rey Mysterio (Likely Dolph Ziggler based on Friday's Smackdown).

With ZZ Top next week's celebrity guest hosts, there is a good chance that all of the wrestlers will be required to wear beards and sunglasses for the matches.
