WILKENFELD'S TAKE: Making Kurt Angle into Lemonade

By: Daniel Wilkenfeld, PWTorch Contributor

As the resident TNA mark, I should probably chime in about the Angle arrest. Let's start with some preliminaries. First, we do not yet technically know that Angle's guilty. However, this column will be written under the presumption that he is guilty of something, which seems likely. If he's cleared of everything, I'll be very happy to be wrong. Second, there is obviously no excuse for circling a Starbucks containing a woman who has a restraining order out against you. Finally, while one might question whether a company should generally hold people accountable for actions taken outside of work, TNA's clear statement of a public morality code combined with wrestling's bad PR generally makes some action both permissible and likely obligatory. The question then becomes, what action should be taken?

If played properly, I would think this could become what our President has taken to calling a teachable moment. They should probably just strip him of the title outright in order to make a clear statement, but jobbing him out could do almost as well. They should find the next person in line who they're fairly sure is not on any illicit drugs and have him win the title (or her—I could totally get behind an Awesome Kong title reign). Moreover, this would be a great time to roll out an anti-drug policy that has some hope of actually curtailing drug use. TNA is in a better position than WWE here, in that there is not a single person on the roster who relies solely on power or physique, so no one would be rendered useless if they suddenly dropped thirty pounds. So how's this for a policy: zero tolerance. You get one month to get off any performance enhancing drug, and after that it's one strike and you're out. They should have one doctor or practice solely in charge of handling prescriptions for actual medical conditions or legitimate pain management (in a lot of ways the pain-killer problem seems much more intractable, but we can leave that much for another day). There's really no excuse to put up with any violations. This program would cost a bit to implement, both in dollars and possible talent losses, but imagine the PR boom. If I saw an ad for ROH hyping their zero tolerance policy as a way to enjoy wrestling guilt-free, I'd quite probably start watching. With sustainability all the rage, TNA could steal a march on WWE and become the company with sustainable talent. Let's face it—"cross the line" is a stupid gimmick anyway; "A new kind of wrestling" or some such could work a lot better. Ideally any policy change would also include a boost in vacation time to help deal with pain and stress issues, but I don't know how much that would cost the company. The key to remember is that, pace what WWE claims about Randy Orton, no one wrestler since Hulk Hogan has really been all that essential to a promotion (okay—maybe Austin). If Kurt didn't clean up his act, TNA would survive perfectly well without him. Maybe Samoa Joe would even be allowed to do something interesting again.

On the creative side, writing out Angle for a bit could free up some much needed space at the top of the card. This is a good chance to push a wild-card main-eventer—if it falls through, they can always blame circumstances. My own inclination would be to strip Angle of the belt, give his spot in the match to the winner of the Steel Asylum, and then has whoever wins that actually win the damned title. Really everyone in that match except for Consequences Creed has earned a spot at the top, particularly if they throw in AJ and Eric Young. These events should be a wake-up call for TNA, ideally changing what goes on in front of the camera and behind it.
