Thank you for joining me as we put Raw "Under The Microscope." This is not a complete recap of Monday's show, instead it's a closer, sometimes offbeat, look at the broadcast.

What do you get for the man who bought everything?

McMahonVinceArt_130GG_14.jpg
I didn't have August 24 marked on my calendar, so I wasn't entirely sure where D-X was going with the opening segment. Despite a few false starts with the actual number, Happy 64th Birthday to Vincent Kennedy McMahon, who was kind enough to share some of his party with the viewers.

Triple H and Shawn Michaels insisted that it wasn't Vegas without showgirls and several talented performers eventually walked to the stage. Fans of a certain type of movie agree that it's not Vegas without "Showgirls," a 1995 movie starring Elizabeth Berkley. The former "Saved by the Bell" actress starred as a young woman who climbs the corporate ladder from stripper to showgirl. The move received a record 13 Razzie nominations, the award annually given to the worst movies of the year. It won 7 Razzies that year, including Worst Picture.

After the showgirls, D-X brought out another Las Vegas tradition, in performers from Cirque du Soleil. It does not translate to "Circus of the girl who played Punky Brewster," that would be Cirque du Soleil Moon Frye.

This actually means "Circus of the Sun" and was founded in 1984 by two former street performers Guy Laliberte and Daniel Gauthier. It was originally based in Montreal, but has since been shared with the world, including at Treasure Island, The Bellagio, and New York, New York on the Las Vegas Strip.

Vincent, let's share

Although McMahon got the most attention, he isn't the only wrestling-related person to be celebrating the anniversary of their birth. The "original" Rock, Rocky Johnson, turns 65 and Sho Funaki is 41. Funaki is known for his work in Japan, debuting in WWF as part of Kai En Tai and his title of "Smackdown's Number One Announcer." He was most recently seen...well, actually he hasn't been recently seen. At one time, he was Kung Fu-Naki Fans of Lucha Libre will note the birth of Enrique Llanes in 1911. Sadly, he passed away in 2004.

Other names mentioned by D-X were Dave Chappelle and Marlee Matlin and they could have included others with the August 24 birthday, including former Broncos Head Coach Mike Shanahan, former The Price is Right model Holly Hallstrom, former Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee, baseball player Cal Ripken, Jr., and actor Steve Guttenberg. Guttenberg is the man who took on the challenging role of Officer Carey Mahoney in the Police Academy franchise. The complexities and nuances of the urban warrior who fought to make the streets, yet behind the badge beat the heart of a sensitive, fragile man with the same fears and worries which all of us face every day. Plus, he hung out with the guy who made the weird noises with his mouth.

For the record, there were seven "Police Academy" movies, although the final one didn't have a number attached to it, it was simply called "Mission to Moscow." Regulars Michael Winslow (the man with the noises), David Graf (Tackleberry, the man who really liked guns) Leslie Easterbrook (the woman who really had guns), George Gaynes (Cmdt. Lassard, received the warmest feedback yet for a speech given at a podium), and G.W. Bailey returned for the final installment of the series.

I know that song!

Yes, that was WWE's favorite singer Jillian Hall serenading McMahon with a breathy version of "Happy Birthday to You." She was dressed quite appropriately as she was imitating the famous version delivered by Marilyn Monroe to President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

One of the most famous celebrities of the time extending birthday wishes to the President isn't shocking, unless you consider that rumors had been swirling in some circles that the two had been having an affair. Monroe was part of the celebration at Madison Square Garden, which actually took place ten days before Kennedy's 45th birthday. Kennedy's wife did not attend. It was one of Monroe's final public appearances, as she died on August 5 later that year.

Although Monroe succeeded and Hall tried to put a sultry twist on the tune, the classic song is generally designed for everyone and Guinness Book of World Records recognized it as the most recognized song in the English language, with "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow" coming in second. The song was written by a pair of Kindergarten teachers, Patty and Mildred Hill. Neither of them attended Kennedy's birthday celebration.

Ah, memories

The video tribute to McMahon started with "Through The Years" from Kenny Rogers and ended, of course, with the classic "Stand Back" from VKM. Most of the video has been seen before, including classic taunts from D-X and Steve Austin. Two gentlemen made surprise appearances, with Bruno Sammartino featured on a look back at when McMahon was a yellow blazer wearing announcer and MMA fighter Bobby Lashley, who has been recently featured on TNA, popped up during the segment when McMahon got his head shaved by Donald Trump.

Mayweather, may not

Although guest host Floyd Mayweather was mentioned early in the show, we went through at least 45 minutes before we actually saw him. He was billed as having "six titles in five different weight classes."

Mayweather won his first title in 1999 as he stopped Genaro Hernandez after the 8th round to take the WBC Junior Lightweight Championship.

He took the WBC Lightweight belt from Jose Luis Castillo in 2002. In 2005, Mayweather beat Arturo Gatti for the WBC Super Lightweight Title and 2006 brought the IBF and IBO World Welterweight Championships after a victory over Zab Judah. In 2007, he claimed the WBC Super Welterweight Championship after a decision over Oscar De La Hoya.

He has been retired from the ring for the last 16 months, not counting his time against The Big Show at WrestleMania XXIV.

Floyd is actually Floyd Mayweather, Jr. as his father was a welterweight contender in the 1970s and now serves as a trainer for several boxers, although his son is no longer one of them. Floyd Jr. fired his dad and didn't speak with him for seven years. To add insult to injury, Floyd Jr. hired Roger Mayweather to replace his father. Roger is the brother of Floyd Sr.

Uncle Roger didn't necessarily keep the peace as he was banned from ringside for one year after nearly inciting a riot after the bout with Zab Judah.

For the record, May weather is usually very nice. Highs in the 70s with a light breeze.

Look at the stars, look how they shine for you

With Summerslam in Los Angeles, you almost had to assume that celebrities would be close to the wrestlers for the weekend. I'm not sure if they picked from the "A-list" this trip, but the footage from the weekend did include Verne Troyer, famous for his work with the "Austin Powers" series of movies, plus Tatyana Ali, who was just a week late for our closer look at the "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air."

Just like McMahon, I'm feeling a bit older today because I actually had to do some research just to figure who some of the celebrities were.

Boo Boo Stewart is actually Nils Stewart and is part of the group T-Squad. Gilles Marini is a French actor perhaps best known for his role in the movie version of "Sex and the City" and he'll be appearing on the upcoming season of "Dancing with the Stars."

The People Have Spoken!

Thank you for voting in this week's Raw Microscope poll. Before I checked the results, I was fully prepared to be taking a closer look at boxers in WWE based on Mayweather's guest hosting stint. I was thinking of Ali at WrestleMania, Mike Tyson in D-X, and even the "Brawl for All" with Bart Gunn and Butterbean.

Then I checked the results.

Apparently, you would like me to take a closer look at your briefs?

The choice of 'boxers or briefs' was the winner. Let me check the results again, maybe (hopefully) they've changed.

No? I'll wait.

(waiting)

Fine.

Boxers or briefs represents the choice of men's undergarments, featuring longer and generally baggier boxers or the classic tighter, usually white, briefs. The phrase 'boxers or briefs' earned a boost in popularity as it was asked of then Presidential candidate Bill Clinton during an event on MTV. Clinton responded 'boxers,' for those of you scoring at home.

Various fashion trends have contributed to the rise and decline (or fall) of both sides of the argument. Tighter jeans in the 80s led to more briefs, while the current trend of baggier jeans has tilted the scale in the opposite direction, with the jeans often baggy enough to reveal the wearer's personal choice of boxer.

The question even spawned a board game from Hasbro with a title that asks the same question.

As for brief boxers, on November 3, 2000, Russell Rees stopped Des Sowden in just 4 seconds in Monmouthshire, Wales. Sowden was dropped by the first punch and the referee stopped the fight. Al Couture knocked out Ralph Walton in 10.5 seconds, but he received the full 10 second count.

Barbara Boxer hasn't been brief as she's been serving as U.S. Senator from California for more than 16 years.

The Boxer Rebellion in China lasted nearly two years.

The canine variety of boxers usually live 10-12 years.

"The Boxer" from Simon & Garfunkel lasts more than five minutes, not exactly brief by today's standards.

What have we learned this week? Don't offer up a choice in the poll if you're not willing to take a closer look at someone's briefs.

Oh well, with a week featuring Big Dick Johnson, what could I expect?
