ECW on Sci-Fi Reax #1: "Hearing Benjamin say his catch phrase makes him look like a doofus." Jan 16, 2008 - 3:36:36 AM
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (5.0): Tonight was a "spinning wheels" edition of ECW. The only real forward movement came from the main event, which was pretty distracted with Edge on commentary. Edge was great on the mic, as evident in the Cutting Edge, but talked too much on commentary. He was even-handed, not overly heelish, but talked too much for me to enjoy the match. I suppose the finish will do, but three dirty finishes doesn't help the feud much. Edge talked too much, and so did Kelly, who after all this time, hasn't improved much in any department. The Highlanders got a surprising face reaction, though yet again did the job. Maybe on Smackdown these two can get somewhere. Colin Delaney is fabulous in his role. I was curious if Kane was going to be next as the big man heels have all done their work. And the first moment of Colin getting in a fighting stance was entertaining. So who's left now? Undertaker... don't know if he'll do it, but why not as he can take his frustrations on poor Colin. Same thing with Batista. Festus could be another one (isn't Jesse injured right now?), and while Khali seems to be on the way out as far being taken seriously goes, he could be in line. After that, it's time to start with some who need to get back into play, like Elijah Burke or Kevin Thorn. I'd say this new Kofi Kingston, but a two-for-one would be cheap immediately upon his debut. There is reason to look forward to next week, but wish it was a lot stronger.
Shane McKinley of Danville, California (4.5) Best Match: Punk vs. Guerro Worst Match: Nunizo vs. Benjamin. Some memorable lines from tonight: Joey: "This is getting difficult to watch" Joey: "This Sucks!" Edge: "You know what, Joey? You suck. Goodbye." "Umbrage" was a new word I learned. Other than that, not much else to the show. The opening segment was awkward. The tag team match was decent with nice moves, but they had a good thing going with the "Redneck & Reject" team. Other than the main event, Colin proves to be something I look forward towards ECW. The Benjamin squash match took too long and I fast-forwarded most of it. "Ain't no stopping me now" might be the worst wrestler catchphrase I've ever heard. Hearing Benjamin say it makes him look like a doofus. Better ones would be like "And that's the gold standard," "I'm rich, b**ch," or "My best year was in 2005." Might as well join Carlito and have a tag team called "The Young Talented WWE Wrestlers Who For Some Reason Had Their Bright Futures Botched." I'm hoping that after the Rumble, the Benjamin squash matches stop, since until Benjamin faces a good opponent, I'm not caring about him and have grown tired of the squashes. Now recently with the ECW ladies dance-offs and strips-offs and "best bodies" competitions, I think I would rather see them wrestle poorly. Or not at all. Although the Punk-Guerrero explanation for reasons why Chavo got his third chance ventured in TNA booking logic, it would have made more sense to me to use your ECW G.M. (Armando E--ss---trada) to play the heel G.M. or at least enforce some power. Despite the faulty logic, the action between these two has been great, with Chavo busting out some unique grappling holds. What was interesting is to note is that it's starting to feel as if Punk is getting too big for ECW, and perhaps a trade towards Smackdown is in the future with a feud against Edge.
