TNA Impact Reax #1: "I know I’ll be in the minority here, but I think the “Stone Cold” Shark Boy gimmick is hilarious." Jan 25, 2008 - 2:53:54 PM
Adam J. Grammas of Westchester, Ill. (6.0): Best match-main event. Worst: Rock-n-Rave. I have to say Matt Morgan is getting very comfortable with the mic. I was loving the promo he cut on Nash, saying all things that were true. Credit to Nash, though; he let Morgan look better than he ever let Awesome look in WCW. Nash and Joe are really playing the tweener role here. I think there was nothing wrong with Lethal dropping out of character for his promo. It showed that he’s “in on the joke” of his gimmick and that it’s just a character he plays. It was time to be serious, so he “broke character.” Actually, I thought it was good that all the “winners” of the awards tonight gave serious, semi-intense promos. I know I’ll be in the minority here, but I think the “Stone Cold” Shark Boy gimmick is hilarious! It’s funnier than most of the comedy WWE has their main eventers do (i.e., DX), so why not give one of their smaller guys do a comedy bit that he does well? Tomko has come a LONG way in a (relatively) short time in TNA. I was going to say a few weeks back, methinks TNA sees their own Batista in him. His attack on Angle was intense. Well, now we know where they were going with the Christopher Daniels firing. This is the first time I’ve actually gotten to see The Curry Man wrestle. He’s quite a bit different in this character with all the dancing. I think this is better than things like Yellow Dog and Mr. America that were (by design) obvious as to who they were. There may actually be viewers out there who don’t know the Curry Man character. A.J. carrying out Karen gave me Hulkster-Liz flashbacks. For those who think I am a mark for TNA, I can be critical of them. Rock-n-Rave, they gotta go. I’ve never been a fan of Robert Roode. And I agree, Mike Tenay is getting pretty bad. He was much better in WCW where he had Tony Schiavone’s bad announcing to make him look better.
J. Day of Dayton, Tenn. (1.0): Best match: My fast forward button on my DVR. Worst match: TNA desperately trying to be old WWE gimmicks and wrestlers, Shark Boy,and the stupidity of the annoying amateur sounding announcers.. I cannot believe the ridiculous show these "professionals" put on. This show is such a cluster of things I just can't bring myself to get into it much. Why didn't Jim Cornette just reach over and grab the X Division belt at the beginning of the show? I guess because it makes sense. "You'll never forget the name of Samoa Joe" or Goldust. Then, "AND that's the fishing line".... ARE you kidding me??Shark Boy is no Stone Cold. NOT. EVEN. CLOSE. "Black Machismo"??? It's so blatantly obvious that these guys are just ripping off old WWE stars, it is too much. All this talent these guys got and this is what they do with it? Gran Daddy Cool is overstaying his welcome. What's Eric Young's gimmick again? He's mentally impaired? Because, honestly, it's like he's TNA's version of Eugene. Another WWE rip-off. Okay, Black Reign and Kaz are fighting over a rat? Yea. That's just must see TV there. Tomko not taking Angle's lip was why this wasn't a zero score. Abyss is just funny. He's not supposed to be, but he is. In a bad way. Booker T says it's been real hard on him,and "you guys." Well, personally, I could not care less about this dumb angle with his annoying wife. Sorry. I guess because it's been overplayed hundreds of times. Road Dog and Bullet Bob? Goodness. Please. Make it stop. Christy Hemme and the Rejects? Please. Make it stop again. Great. Tiger Mask. Curry Man. Shark Boy. This is why when I'm around friends and they flip to TNA I pretend I don't watch wrestling anymore. They always say, "Wow, they look so rinky dink and amateur hour." Its hard to argue the point with garbage like this on TV. There's a reason Impact keeps the ratings steady.
Andre Polizzi of San Jose, Calif. (Regular jobs: Courier/Sports P.A. Announcer) (7.0): Best Match: Styles & Tomko vs. Team 3D vs. MCMG. Worst Match: Shark Boy vs. Elix Skipper. This was a pretty good edition of Impact. For once, I smiled and enjoyed more of the skits and "interview segments" than cringed through them. On the plus side, leading the way once again was TNA's use of their five most biggest names. Psycho Samoa Joe has been really entertaining me the last four weeks and did so again tonight. If the segment TNA has already shot for next week has Psycho Samoa Joe returning to milquetoast, content, goody-goody Joe then please, please spend the money for once and reshoot it. Tomko and A.J. Styles were well used in their title defense and in their skits. Although Christian and Kurt Angle were under-used at least they were on. Once again, I had to automatically deduct a full point from TNA for LAX not being on the show. Also on the plus side: the X Division title match, the TNA Knockouts segment, Booker's selling of being an emotionally distraught husband who got his wife hurt, and the Cornette attempts to lecture the locker room skit. The negatives tonight were fewer, but really need to be whacked immediately. The continued mistreatment, bordering on sexual harassment, of women by men has shifted from Ms. Brooks to Crystal. I will keep harping on this like Wade does about chairshots to the head. Black Reign a/k/a Dustin Rhodes, Abyss Mitchell vs. James Mitchell's monster club, and the Rock & Rave infection are all wastes of TV time. Finally, I've chuckled and winked along with Jay Lethal's Black Machismo Randy Savage impersonation. I smirked last week when Shark Boy went Stone Cold. These impersonations need to be RARE and not another one every single week. What's next? Christy Hemme doing an Ashley Massaro naughty school girl rocker chick? Robert Roode doing a southern version of JBL? Oh. Wait. Never mind.
