WWE Royal Rumble Reax #5: "Jeff Hardy is buried. All of that push was for nothing." Jan 28, 2008 - 10:45:42 AM
Sam Weiss of San Diego, Calif. (6.0): Best Match: Rumble itself, though Cena coming out and winning put me off a bit. Worst Match: Most of the rest. Put simply, too many poorly performed moves or boring segments. Can we stop wasting time on the divas already? Y2J looked sloppy; I would have much preferred excellent execution over blood. Finally, the constant teasing about Flair's retirement is already getting old; let's get it over with and make him G.M. of Raw if WWE feels they must keep his face around.
Ryan Cooper of Wichita, Ks. (4.5): Best Match: Rumble. Worst Match: Ric Flair vs. MVP. I know it's probably not a popular opinion, but for the love of god Ric, RETIRE! I have never understood why he was and is so popular. His style may have played 25 years ago, but it doesn't work now. I'm disappointed Hardy didn't win, but I didn't expect him to. I did, however, expect a better match. As for the Rumble, while I called it the best match, it was only marginally better than the others. I'm sick of John Cena and I'm sick of Triple H. I'm so sick of them that I would've been less disappointed with a Hornswoggle win.
Jeremy Quist of Lynchburg, Va. (9.5): Best Match: Rumble Match. Worst Match: Orton vs. Hardy. I thought this was the best card that I've purchased in a long time. I was not bored one time throughout the entire show. While it's true that Flair is old and slow, it is still enjoyable to watch the pathway to his final walk down the aisle at WM 24. I felt that Chris Jericho showed a lot of heart. They botched that bulldog spot, and the N.Y. crowd rode them, but Chris redeemed the blunder. When he took JBL over the top with that clothesline, he put so much force behind it that he took himself over, too. I sense that Y2J is extremely frustrated with his return right now, but his heart will bring him back to where he wants to be. Edge vs. Rey was better than I expected, but I thought Rey's leg injury angle took away from the tempo of the match. I'm sure many enjoyed the in-ring psychology, but couldn't Rey fake an arm injury? When Orton vs. Hardy came on before the Rumble match, it completely gave away the finish. The match clearly should have been given more time. It was great for what it was, but Vince made the wrong decision. He should have ignored his daughter and anyone else who told him that it was not the right time to put the strap on Hardy. They were in Madison Square Garden, and this was a major PPV. Hardy is the most exciting wrestler to watch today, and the majority of WWE fans are behind him. It could be argued that giving Jeff the strap last night would have been bigger than doing it at WM24. I am still heavily intrigued by WWE right now, but I strongly believe that Vince blew a major opportunity last night. As for the Rumble match, Shawn played an enjoyable comedic role all night. I don't buy Johnny Nitro as a young HBK, though; sorry Ross. When Triple H was 29, I admit that I thought Big Show was 30, and Hunter would win. I popped big for Cena's music. Then he had his head down, and I thought it might be an impostor. When I picked his head up I popped again. Triple H's look was priceless. I then thought Batista would win to set up Triple H vs. Cena at WM 24. After Batista got dumped, I popped, but I felt that the finish couldn't be good for WWE either way. Triple H must win the WWE Championship before WM 24 and beat Cena there now. There is no other way for him to save face. This means that Jeff Hardy is buried. All of that push was for nothing. He'll probably win Money in the Bank at WM 24, but so what. He may win the title at a meaningless PPV, only to lose after a short-lived run. This was a great PPV, and I know I got my money's worth. However, Vince made a big mistake tonight, and a lot of us fans come away sad.
Paul Calligan Jr. of Hoover, Ala. (9.0): Best Match. Rumble. Worst Match: Flair vs. MVP. Do you see what happens when you pay attention to your history? Something as simple and refreshing as the promo that had been used to give an in-depth history of the Rumble sparked a booking sequence so amazing that no matter what you thought about the rest of the show, you actually felt like you were witnessing storytelling at its finest hour. Believe it or not, I'm no fan of Cena, Triple H, or Batista, BUT, on this night, they managed to pull every ounce of emotion out of me that I had in reserve and I realized that I was cheering the "show" and not just the wrestlers. It didn't matter who won; WWE won; We won, because we were entertained. Vickie Guerrero, will you marry me? You are the kind of woman I want by my side. There should be a rule allowing legends to keep there shirts on when wrestling. MVP, if this is going to be your year (again), pass out, don't tap out! Kennedy, you are in the right place at the right time because Raw is so top-heavy with faces, that with Orton being the no. 1 heel, you should be the no. 1 heel without a title - meaning that after WM, you should be co-headlining almost every PPV this year. Santino was an X-factor for the show; his comedy on the mic and expressions in the ring are priceless!
