TNA Impact Reax #1: "Angle and Booker failed miserably to shore up any sense that Sting went heel." Sep 5, 2008 - 9:37:49 PM
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (7.0) Best: A.J. Styles promo; A.J. vs. Christian; Sting promo. Worst: These subliminal messages in my head; diva madness. There wasn't a whole lot not to like about Impact, but between the actual show, the constant plugging for the video game, and other video riffraff, I just couldn't enjoy it. Angle and Booker failed miserably to shore up any sense that Sting went heel; their promo put themselves over more than Sting's turn and promo last week. And Booker needs to give up the phony accent. Strangely, the Creed-Bashir match played to the pre-match promo by Bashir that he's been victimized by "Lady America" since 9/11. He is still a heel in general terms so the match made the fans happy, so a fine line got towed there. Not sure what to make of the ref suddenly gone wrestler, but for once a ref fights back. Thank you! Sting comes to the Impact Zone without makeup which takes away from the mystique; so to did Christopher Daniels, as he's not himself these days. These subliminal messages are driving me nuts. If they were meant as under-the-skin P.R. it was badly done; the blips come across as bad bush league editing. Frank Trigg killed what was the very good Styles-Cage match; Styles nearfalls on a toss from the corner and a quick frog splash yet is down for the count with a lame kendo shot. Insanity. TNA is killing the Knockouts Division, trying to fix what wasn't broken. Two promos in a row Sting said the things that made sense from an old-school veteran perspective and thus were not accepted as heel statements. AJ made just as good of sense coming from someone part of a company starting from the ground up. Looks like a stalemate there. There could really be something worth looking into with the Sting-A.J. situation without involving Jeff Jarrett. Jeff will either complete the Sting turn (as far as Sting will allow it to go) or turn A.J. which would be just as awkward. But my curiosity is there so I will wait and see.
Eric Gall of Bridgeport, Conn. (6.0): Best Match: Melissa/Saeed vs. ODB w/ Kong & Nikki after-match; ref goes nuts. Worst Match: Sting. I really hate when promotions pile so much respect and build up a certain guy to make him look so much more important than everybody else. I can't stand how this is done with Triple H in WWE, and I can't stand how they're using Sting. This guy never wrestles, gets the last five minutes of every show, and now I have to hear him lecture viewers on what kind of fans they should be? I can't wait until someone cracks a bat over his head (Remember when Angle hit him in the face with it when Sting was supposed to block it?). I never thought I'd want to see Jeff Jarrett return, but if it gets the focus off of Sting being in so much of the limelight, I'm all for it. Impact always seems likes it's being written by seven different people, and most of the show seemed kinda blah. Samoa Joe's promos can at times seem to be anger without direction, but his words of earning respect rang true. Wilkenfeld is STILL calling Lauren "Not-Crystal?" Dude, give it up. They really should only have Curry Man talk in the PB&J (or whatever it's called), since Super Eric and Stone Cold Shark Boy are getting more annoying by the week. Abyss... who cares? I think the Beautiful People Beauty Pageant is a good thing; no, I'm not worried if it's "Divaesque;" it's still more entertaining than just about any Rough Cut or Gail Kim promo (I know, I know, but she may be coming back). It looks as though Cheerleader Melissa will be revealed as Raisha's alter ego. This is good, because she has the ability and presence to be the go-to girl for any women's division for years. The Ref vs. Daivari incident was well done; something like this hasn't been done in while, and was the first moment of the show to grab my attention. What led up to that, though, has always been a sore spot with me. Why do refs kick the (usually) heel's hand off the rope when he's trying to break up a sunset flip? Isn't a rope break supposed to be called here? I've always found this inconsistent and infuriating; this is a "sports entertainment" tweak that needs to be removed from any true wrestling organization.
