TNA Impact HD Reax #2: "I was hoping for a lot less talking and a lot more wrestling tonight."

Matt Guerra of Bayonne, N.J. (7.5) Wow, by reading your reports I would have thought Impact was a bad show, but when in reality it was quite enjoyable. The Main Event Mafia makes sense, and it seems like it can go to places TNA has not gone before. The Legends Belt is impressive and I liked the interaction between Booker and Christian. Yes, the accent needs to go. It's getting Ernest the Cat Miller heat. Foley's announcement was a shocker, and I'm very interested in seeing where this goes. Monumental show? Why did this have to be a monumental show? Were there extra advertisements on TV for it? No, so it did not have to be a PPV. They simply got HD - something like the rest of America should have had six months ago.

Sam Saunders of Chicago, Ill. (7.0) Best match/segment: the unveiling of the Main Event Mafia. Worst match/segment: tag team gauntlet championship. Always a pleasure to see the gorgeous Velvet Sky gracing my screen, and in HD no less. There's no denying her match with Christy Hemme was pretty bad from start to finish though. Hemme is a charismatic personality, but I just can't see her filling the void left by Gail Kim despite TNA's will to make it so. She's either going to have to improve her work rate quickly or they're going to have to look elsewhere on the roster. (cough, Melissa, cough.)

Simply put, I loved the unveiling of the Main Event Mafia faction featuring Booker T, Kurt Angle, Kevin Nash, and Sting. Quite a well dressed bunch too, I might add. I especially liked the way they brought out the Stinger sans makeup, sporting a sharp pair of shades and an even sharper suit, making his heel turn more or less official (or as official as it's ever going to be at this point). Nice. Wrestling's really lacking a dominant faction right now and there's something sorta fresh yet rather old school about this pairing. Dare I say even Horsemanesque with the Stinger in the Ric Flair role (the icing on the cake would of course be Flair himself in the J.J. Dillon role!) I look for Sting to hold on to the title much longer than previously expected with heel tactics at his disposal and this new group now behind him.

Gotta love Mick Foley pulling up in the hideous lime green Volkswagon. Who else could get away with that? ... The expected unveiling of the new Legends title went well. I like the design of the belt and the red strap in particular. It's a bit gaudier than TNA's other titles, as it well should be, but still pretty traditional looking overall. I actually expected it to be more over the top. The whole exchange between Booker and Christian was priceless. Loved the crowd chanting "lose the accent" while Booker and Christian both seemed to be struggling to keep a straight face at times. This was pretty good stuff in spite of, or perhaps because of, the wrestlers's struggle to remain in character.

I was really surprised and somewhat disappointed in the X Division title bout between Lethal and Bashir. I certainly didn't expect Bashir to go over in only two minutes, and cleanly at that! Was wondering aloud who was finally going to put an end to Bashir's reign of terror (bad pun not intended) and had my answer in the subsequent backstage skit featuring Rhino. That's all well and good, but where does that leave Lethal? And for that matter Creed?

The tag team gauntlet match started off well enough but ended up a bit sloppy overall. 3-D teased another flaming table spot with Abyss, this time in the middle of the ring (much to the crowd's delight), but didn't follow through with it (much to the crowd's dismay). Probably for the best after the last mishap. Wouldn't have looked too good for Abyss and the entire ring to go up in flames on live TV, but the live crowd looked pretty disappointed after the elaborate tease. Roode takes a 3-D through the table but Storm once again steals the win via the dreaded "face full of beer." Glad to see Beer Money retain though.

I predicted at least one title change tonight and we got it in the form of Kong going over Taylor Wilde via the Awesome Bomb to take back the Knockouts crown. It had to happen sooner or later, but I gotta give credit to Wilde. She seemed to improve throughout her reign and she put in another valiant effort tonight, including a near picture perfect missile dropkick amongst other high impact spots.

The main event wasn't anything spectacular but I can't help but get excited whenever I see the Stinger in action. Still, it was a disappointment that the commercial break seemingly lasted as long as the match itself. Especially after all that build-up. That said, I couldn't help but smile at the post-match beat down Joe and A.J. received at the hands of the MEM, as it further established their Horsemanesque dominance. I was surprised to see Joe and A.J. both go for a little juice there.

After the unveiling of the MEM, Foley's "big announcement" seemed a bit anti-climatic to me. Is anybody that surprised he's now become "part owner" of TNA? I think it was already pretty well established it was going to be something along those lines. What else was it going to be? Still, the confrontation with Angle played out well with both of these old pros playing their roles to perfection. Angle's mic skills have only gotten better since entering TNA and is there a stronger worker in all of North America at the moment? I really think not.

Overall, I was hoping for a lot less talking and a lot more wrestling tonight, but I can't dog TNA too hard after unveiling the awesomeness that is the MEM. Bottom line is I'm once again itching to see what happens next week, so in that sense tonight was another success.

PWTORCH FORMAT CONVENTIONS

For the sake of clarity to our readers (and to save us time editing these same things over and over), please follow these simple conventions when writing Torch Reax:

-Wrestlers teaming together should be connected with "&" symbol (e.g. Hunter & Michaels, Devon & Ray) or with a "/" (e.g. Animal/Hawk, Harris/Storm), but not dashes and not the word "and."

-To designate wrestlers who are fighting, feuding, or wrestling each other, put a dash (-) between them (e.g. Michaels-McMahon, Jarrett-Sting, Hogan-Andre) or use "vs."

-The word versus should always be abbreviated this way: "vs." with a period afterward (not "v." or "v/s" or "VS" or "VS." or any other way).

-Plus, it's just our policy, but we don't indulge wresting promotions' strange spelling fetishes where they spell Raw, Smackdown, Heat, Impact, etc. with the haphazard capitalization of various leTTeRz. It seems very "junior high," so no RAW (it's Raw), no iMPACT (it's Impact), etc.

-Please try to avoid overuse of dot-dot-dots. If you have a thought that's "trailing off," you can use for effect, but otherwise, just use periods, commas, and our personal favorite, semicolons if you dare. We have always had a policy of only one exclamation point and no ALL CAPS. Let your words convey the meaning of your point. There's many to choose from out there.
