TNA SURVEY REAX #2: Who are the main stars in TNA? - New trio of Angle, Joe, Styles

By James Caldwell, PWTorch.com assistant editor

Last week, we posted a TNA Survey with five questions on the direction of TNA to take the pulse of the discerning Torch reader's opinion of TNA.

Questions: (1) Has the Main Event Mafia angle been booked well and are you following TNA closer because of that heel faction? ... (2) When you tune in to TNA Impact, who are two or three wrestlers that you feel are the main attractions? ... (3) Do you watch TNA Impact more or less often than a year ago, and why? ... (4) Would you prefer TNA replace many short matches with fewer longer competitive matches throughout the show? ... (5) What is TNA's biggest weakness compared to WWE? And how about it's biggest strength?

Reax: (2) When you tune in to TNA Impact, who are two or three wrestlers that you feel are the main attractions?

Reading through the feedback we received, I hear the grumbling from Torch readers that they tune in for A.J. Styles, Samoa Joe, and the Motor City Machineguns, but unwillingly accept that those wrestlers won't be featured as they would like.

There's also a sentiment that the Main Event Mafia wrestlers, outside of Kurt Angle, are worth watching...10-20 years ago. "If I want to see a good, well booked Nash match I'll get an old video of him during his prime," said Torch reader Monday Night Wars Fan.

Kurt Angle is fortunate to be in the middle of the "young stars" vs. "old stars" mix, as he's still putting on technically-proficient matches at his age and with his past health issues that are the level of what TNA fans expect from Joe and Styles. "Angle is still one of the best," said Torch reader baminks.

Plus, Angle provides entertainment value, which many Torch readers pointed to as the key to TNA's business right now. Torch reader Basstados wrote: "Maybe there are some guys on the roster that have better matches, but for me acting is very important, and in that in my opinion he's the best right now in TNA and WWE."

Dusty Robinson, our Torch Trivia winner from December and January, gives his vote for top three box office draws for TNA: "The three wrestlers I feel are the biggest attractions are Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe, and A.J. Styles. The sad thing is TNA doesn't think Joe and Styles are main attractions. They would rather push guys past their prime like Sting, Mick Foley, Scott Steiner, Kevin Nash, and Booker T."

Caldwell's Analysis: If TNA management had to go down a list of their Top 10 wrestlers on the roster and decide whom to re-sign to deals with a limited budget, I believe signing Kurt Angle would be top priority. He's right there with Joe and Styles for Best Wrestler in the company and the entertainment value he brings to TV is helping carry Impact broadcasts.

After Angle, you'd have to re-sign Joe and Styles, otherwise TNA would be hemorrhaging its future. Eventually, TNA is going to come to the point where they're forced to put their two top stars in a position to draw money, such as when Angle and Joe were featured in the Lockdown PPV title match last April.

After Angle, Joe, and Styles, Torch readers went back and forth on whether to go "Frontline" or "Main Event Mafia." Looking at that Top 10 list of stars in TNA, Abyss's name pops to mind despite the debilitating booking of his character the past few months. Perhaps Hernandez is a Top 10 signing that TNA would be foolish to let go and see him become a main event star in WWE.

Clearly, though, it's the trio of Angle, Joe, and Styles that TNA viewers are tuning in for.
