4/5 WWE WrestleMania 25 PPV Reax
John McKay of Atlanta, Ga. (7.0): Best match: Undertaker-Michaels. Worst match: Diva Battle Royal. MITB was a good way to get the crowd involved early, but it was poorly executed with many botched spots and an abrupt ending. The DBR was a disaster; most of us didn't even realize Molly Holly was in the match until she was tossed out. Hardy-Hardy was short but very strong, with a fairly emphatic victory for Matt. Jericho predictably carried his match, and props to Steamboat for some pretty strong work as well. The Rourke stuff was unnecessary though. JBL-Mysterio was bizarre to say the least. Everything about Undertaker-Michaels felt epic, from the awesome introductions to the multiple finishers. Best match on any promotion since the hour-long Angle-Rhino-Christian match in June of 2007. The three-way title match was entertaining but predictable. Kudos to finding a clever way to let Big Show rest while still keeping him involved. The Triple H-Orton match was anti-climatic to say the least.
Jonathan Dupont of Montreal, Canada (9.0): Best Match: Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels. Worst Match: Kid Rock "concert." (Sorry, I paid for a wrestling show.) Again, WrestleMania delivers. The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels classic was worth the $70 I paid to see the show. Both are in a class of their own, but what scares me is that both are well past their 40s now. Who will stand up and be the Shawn Michaels or the Undertaker of tomorrow? I don't believe there will be another Shawn Michaels anytime soon. He is legendary and the type of wrestler we will tell our grandkids about. But worries aside, it was a privilege to see that match live. As a fan, I enjoyed the WrestleMania moments (Austin celebrating, Santina's dancing, Rourke knocking out Jericho) and most of all, I thought Ricky Steamboat's performance was amazing. When he launched himself over the top rope to the outside, my whole living room went nuts. The triple threat was much better than I expected, and Cena lifting both Edge and Big Show was phenomenal. Those special feats are what make WrestleMania special. Money in the Bank and the Hardys delivered stunts that will be replayed on highlight videos for years. My only complaint outside of the unwanted Kid Rock concert is that I was a disappointed by the Orton - Triple H match, but it was probably caused by their spot on the card. Triple H used to steal the show a decade ago, but he cannot do it anymore. Orton has a fantastic gimmick, but unfortunately, I believe the wrestler is quite bland. So asking the two of them to follow two very hot main events was too much. They should have been the first main event. WrestleMania has grown to be more than a wrestling show. It is a spectacle and it reminds me every year that the wrestling fan in me is alive and well.
Michael McEachern of Plymouth, Mass. (10.0): Best Match: Michaels-Undertaker. I have not ordered a WWE PPV since the early 2000s. I don't often follow the sport much anymore, but when I found out Michaels and Taker were squaring off at WM, I decided $55 would be worth it. I was not disappointed. Without question, the greatest match I have ever seen. Shawn Michaels is the greatest performer in the history of WWE hands down. I continued watching after this match, and while I understand the guys with the straps, especially Triple H, deserved to be carded as the "main events," there was no way they could live up to what took place between Michaels and Taker. Nowadays, you hear a lot made of games as "instant classics" - games you know are classics as they are happening. Michaels-Taker was an instant classic.
