-- 8/11 ECW TV Reax
Tyrone Dudley of Salem, Va. (7.0): Best: Benjamin-Ryder. Worst: Raw Rebound. Pretty good show. I noticed Caldwell wondering how Benjamin became a face. I'll tell you how he became a face. They respect his talent and ability and couldn't care less if he's "entertaining." I remember another unentertaining wrestler who became popular simply because he had skills. His name was Chris Benoit. I know WWE doesn't want to mention him too much anymore, but they can't deny that his skills made him popular. Benjamin is cut from the same mold. Do your thing in the ring and let the fans decide. I'm pretty biased because I grew up an hour from Shelton and heard stories of his athletic legend. Sorry I went on that diatribe. His match with Ryder was great. If Vince actually gave a hoot about ECW, that could be a great mid-card match for Summerslam. I don't mind Abraham Washington's show. It's supposed to be cheesy, and he plays that role well. I agree that Zeke's music is pretty awesome, however I'm scared that he and Kozlov are going to make out with the way they stare at each other. Regal being number one contender for the ECW Title is more of a lifetime achievement award than any legit earning of the distinction and being a fan of Regal, I don't mind it one bit. Overall a good show. The crowd being hot for most of the show helped a lot to this high rating. They should really think about expanding the roster and getting a second hour to the show. I think it'd help legitimize ECW more.
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (6.0): Best: Ryder vs. Benjamin; Hurricane build. Worst: DX replay; Canadian crowd. My score for this show is more like a 9, but not since Backlash 2004 have I really been this annoyed with the "Bizarro" Canadian crowd. Sometimes they act too smart for their own good and forget the effort of the wrestlers who came to athletically entertain them. Back in 2004, they forgot that their hometown boy Chris Benoit was looking to retain his newly acquired title. That crowd was more focused on his opponents, who weren't even in DX mode at that time. This show felt sweetened from start to finish, which only helped the Ryder vs. Benjamin match. The crowd eventually warmed up to Benjamin, who still isn't a natural face
in my book yet. How do we know that the seemingly botched springboard crossbody by Ryder wasn't intentional? The crowd seemed to piss on it not because he's a heel whose dastardly deed was thwarted because he screwed up and got caught, but because the match wasn't "perfect." Get
over it; mistakes happen in any theater. The Helms interview of Burchill visibly foreshadowed Hurricane's return, but it was still well done. A Yoshi/Hurricane vs. Regal/Birchill match could be on the horizon soon, and that would be dandy. Regal will probably put over Christian first--or maybe not--but the tag match possibility looms. I find it intriguing that the Canadian crowd spewed "You Can't Wrestle" at Kozlov, yet didn't do likewise at Ezekiel Jackson. At least Kozlov is allowed enough time for a match, while Jackson is barely trusted beyond three moves total. Tyler Reks is lightyears better than both, but got booed out of the building. Excuse me? Why was Tyler dealt a jobber anyway after weeks of hanging with the roster? Tiffany dealt with the Burchills's issues with Helms/Hurricane, and that was fine. But she is apparently too busy to announce on Abraham Washington's show that Regal was deemed #1 contender. He's lost more than he's won recently, which calls into question how he's the next contender. New guy Sheamus has won more times than Regal, so why isn't he contending? Yes, Sheamus is winning more for his push, but there does need to be a little clearing up of the issue of the criteria to becoming a title contender.
