-- 8/27 WWE Superstars Reax
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (10.0): Best: Dolph vs. Finlay vs. Knox. Worst: Ask The Divas. This show I had to look at with an unusual set of eyes. I was at the Thomas and Mack in Las Vegas to see the Swagger-Primo match. I figured it was Swagger's to win then, so that was no surprise. Match was fine both live and "memorex." The "Primo" chant was genuine. The Ask The Divas segment fits for Superstars, but it would be nice if it would lead to something for the ladies. The whole thing about Helms's no-so-secret secret identity is if you turn off your picky brain, play along with childhood memories of superheroes, you'll get this just fine. Thanks for the memories, Striker, by the way. Helms and Burchill turned in another good match to keep things even. The Taker video was of a similar premise to WrestleMania record one, but nicely done right down to "interrupting the feed" and timely for Friday. I wish I knew the situation with Mysterio after watching Superstars, but I still figured that Dolph would be heading to Breaking Point. Now the question will be exactly how Dolph gets there: a champion defending the title, or competing for a held up one after Rey is "injured" next week to buy his suspension time? The match itself was one of the better three-ways I've seen in a while. There wasn't a lot of down time for any one participant. The finish leaves Dolph the scrappy opportunistic victor. His opponents, like Helms-Burchill, are still somewhat even as Knox was pinned by Dolph and not Finlay. All three looked good in the end.
-- 8/27 TNA Impact Reax
Erik McHatton of Lexington, Ky. (8.5): Best Match: Hamada vs. Daffney. Worst Match: Women's Tag. I was pleasantly surprised by this week's TNA Impact. Normally I'm mildly entertained by the "all over" style of booking that pervades this show, but tonight I was actually entertained by what was a very well put together two hours of wrestling television. There was no wasted motion in the booking of tonight's show. Everything moved storylines forward in a logical manner - the right emphasis was placed on the right things. Matches were decently long and mic time given to those that needed it. I think that Eric Young is phenomenal on the mic. He's one of the best in the business right now. He may even be better than Jericho. His intensity and diction are very good, and he genuinely seems to believe the things that he is saying. Kudos should go to Sheik Abdul Bashir for a very inspired promo, and kudos for TNA management for letting him speak. His impassioned speech was well done and showed us another view point from the World Elite faction. I liked the emphasis on the Knockouts division, with a stellar match between Hamada and Daffney. The decision to bring in and elevate women's stars from around the world is smart on TNA's part, seeing as the women's division is the ratings winner of the show each week. Dixie Carter being brought in to announce Lashley's first match lent weight to his character and his "importance" as and in-ring performer. Movement was also made as well in advancing several storylines, including A.J. Styles and Sting as well as Matt Morgan and the Mafia. All in all I loved this show, and I usually fast forward through most of it. I took points off for the skit with Mick Foley (my favorite wrestler ever mind you), ODB, and The Deaner. It was silly and devalues what should be a very important belt for TNA. Also, points off for the use of the Motor City Machine Guns, but hey at least they wrestled tonight. I also think credit should be given to whoever booked tonight's show for something they DIDN'T do. So many times the writing staff of TNA are lambasted for overbooking any given show. By having Eric Young react calmly to Hernandez's rejection of his offer, and by NOT having the World Elite attack him during the Main Event showed a steady hand booking wise. In a company that tends to jump the gun on things and not slow book anything, this was a refreshing change. This was a good show and I hope it is a sign of things to come.
