-- 12/14 WWE Raw Reax
John of Cocoa Beach, Fla., writer (2.0): Best Match: none. Worst Match: Divas 14-lady tag. Congrats, WWE, on killing the momentum from Ozzy Osbourne, Jesse "The Governor/Actor/Wrestler" Ventura, and Mark Cuban as guest hosts. What was Dennis Miller trying to do, get ESPN to rehire him for Monday Night Football? You could tell Vince was NOT happy about Miller suggesting Bret Hart as a guest host. He sold that pretty well. On to the awards. Yes, Jeri-Show for tag team. Jericho was on all three brands at one point this year, and he had the best heel promos. Yes, Sheamus as breakout star with a little rub for Yoshi Tatsu, who I hope stays on ECW and doesn't get the Evan Bourne treatment with a move to Raw. C.M. Punk for 'retiring' Jeff Hardy? No way, not when you had the Randy Orton RKO Stephanie McMahon, or Randy punting Vince's head. Diva of the year, Maria? The only thing she has done on Smackdown is failed at romance with Dolph Ziggler. If Maryse had not been injured, she would have received my vote. Match of the Year was, no doubt, Shawn Michaels and Undertaker, but please no re-match at WrestleMania 26. What happened to the idea of Cena and Taker? The Taylor Swift/Kanye West spoof by Batista was a good attempt to further his new heel character as now a whiner and a crybaby as a result of the World Title overturn at the TLC PPV. DX's Tiger Woods satire was fairly funny, but enough Tiger jokes, Shopzone plugs, and Hornswoggle - get back to wrestling. Did Michael Cole have a "vintage" Kurt Angle moment? Does Matt Striker call Nick Bockwinkel each week to see which twenty-dollar words to incorporate into each broadcast? Seeing 14 Divas in the ring in formal gowns and high heels made me think the Godfather was going to show up. The tournament to determine the Superstar of the Year was a good concept, but in reality, Randy Orton on Raw, Jeff Hardy on Smackdown, and Christian on ECW were the stars of 2009.
A.A. Norman, Tulsa, Okla. (0.0) While my interest was waning over the course of the three-hour Raw show, I was trying to figure out why I disliked John Cena's character so much. He seemed like a nice guy that didn't break the rules and wasn't in danger of violating the Wellness Policy or getting arrested or anything. And the kids love him. Then, as I saw him standing there in blue and orange gear, apologizing for losing, it hit me: John Cena is the Tim Tebow of the WWE. And most college football fans are sick of Tim Tebow despite his clean-cut, nice-guy image. When you push a guy like Cena as much as sports media has pushed Tebow, it's no wonder many crowds start booing anytime he "overcomes odds" and defies whatever. Anyway, that is all I took away from the show because it was that bad.
Richard Houghland, Torch reader: It is official - Dennis Miller is as funny as Abraham Washington. Scratch that. That'ss insulting to Abraham "please give me any reaction so I know you are still there" Washington. He was not funny for the most part, he was not current, and he did not prep for his role, all of which were inexcusable. Can I nominate Dennis Miller as the worst guest host of Raw ever? Even Verne Troyer was better, but not by much. Speaking of Abe, what in the Blue Blazer was he doing nominated for any Slammy? The three best things from Raw were: (3) Mr. WrestleMania challenging the Deadman to a WrestleMania rematch, (2) Dennis Miller suggesting Bret Hart guest host Raw, and (1) The forced exit of Jericho from Raw with everyone helping him leave.
