-- 1/4 WWE Raw and TNA Impact Reax
Michael of Virginia Beach, Va., computer engineer (7.0 Impact): Best Match: A.J. Styles vs. Kurt Angle. Worst Match: Steel Cage Asylum "Red Metal Monkey Bars" match. (6.0 Raw): Best Match: DX vs. JeriShow. Worst Match: Bella Twins vs. Maryse. I watched both shows and I must say that as a whole, they disappointed me. My initial plan going in was to watch the first hour of Impact and stay with the program as long as I felt it was relevant. Right off the bat, TNA dropped the ball by having two shady finishes. Even worse, they had a chair shot to the head (and three total on the night if I did my math right). As 8:45 approached, Impact had not impressed me. They then went into a 15-minute long commercial break (or so it seemed). As Hogan entered, I swapped over to Raw to see Bret Hart make his appearance and I switched back. That seemed to be the trend of the night, as neither program really captured me. None of the matches excited me on Raw while Impact had some decent features. I'm not as high on A.J. vs. Angle as everyone else. Both men's finishers were highly de-valued in that fight (three Styles Clashes and two 450 springboard flips for A.J. to get the win). In the end, TNA gets the better rating because they left me with more questions that I want answered: Why are Sting and Flair there? Why are the Nasty Boys there? Who attacked everyone backstage? Will I ever get to see any of these "amazing" young guys wrestle? Will Hogan ever shut up? How long until Dixie realizes she's made a huge mistake?
Matthew Charles of Cincinnati, Ohio (9.0 Impact): Best: A.J. Styles vs. Kurt Angle, Eric Bischoff segments. Worst: The Knockouts Match. Wow is all I can really say about the presentation that TNA delivered. TNA delivered the best programming since the early days of TNA. The Styles-Angle match completely stole the show on a wrestling aspect. All of the nearfalls and counters in the match didn't elevate one over the other, which I think was the purpose of the match altogether. Personally, I would love to see Angle go back into a heel persona, which is what I think he shines best in. But the Styles-Angle match definitely topped any match since Shawn Michaels-Undertaker at WrestleMania. The crowd at the Impact Zone matched, if not exceeded, the excitement shown head-to-head with Raw, even with the return of Bret Hart and the much-larger crowd. The TNA crowd was so electric and I think really showcased Styles as the top babyface in the company. The Bischoff segments proved to me just how empty the wrestling business has been without this man. Bischoff (at least last night) proved to me that he is the ultimate "boss" heel, even more so than McMahon. I was never really a big NWO fan, but the ending on Impact really came together to leave the suspense open on exactly which Hogan that we were receiving in TNA. I think if you compared this edition of Impact to anything WWE has showcased in the past six or seven years, this Impact definitely stole the show. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Matthew Robins of Chicago, Ill. (8.0 Impact): Best: Cliffhangers (stories about Sting, Masked Man, Ric Flair, Jeff Hardy, etc.). Worst: A red cage that blocks the home audience and probably the live audience from seeing just exactly who is in the X Division. This had classic Nitro written all over it. Suspense, new characters with no background story, lots of backstage action, and so many stories that are just getting started that will make you tune in week after week to watch unfold. Bischoff was terrific and Hogan was, dare I say sharper than ever. The thought of a storyline that really makes think all of these stars from 15 years ago really were brought in for one night is pretty great. Most old-time stars are fun to see for five minutes, but then you get bored with them quickly. No one loves Razor Ramon/Scott Hall more than me and he was there within the last two years and had a terrible run. I wish he could still wrestle, but I know he should not. At least not on my TV. Back to the Hogan storyline. I hope and wish Hogan meant what he said by putting over the current young stars that have carried TNA for the past few years and that the old stars that were trying to crash the party were only there for one night as part of the story to draw in viewers. The shock value was there and controlled mayhem was at its best. Tenay and Taz are so much better than Cole and Lawler; it's not even fair. Joe vs. Abyss was probably not the best way to showcase these two hard workers, but at least they got on the card. The main event was outstanding, even though you knew it would be. Kurt Angle is a Top 5 wrestler of all-time. He is someone that you change the channel to watch, and deep down, Vince knows it. Now, who was that masked man? Where do you get that many pairs of black jeans? Was that a live shot of Sting in the rafters or one from 1997?
