-- 5/3 WWE Raw Reax
Adam Riemer of New York, N.Y. (8.0): Best: Jericho/Miz union and Randy Orton's overall persona. Worst: Henry-Ryder and the backstage segments with Wayne Brady. This Raw could have been a really poor show had it not been for the heels and the anomaly known as Randy Orton. Now we get what should be twice as fun in The Miz and Chris Jericho after their respective runs with Big Show as a tag partner. Jericho also had some of the best moments of the night when he was berating Lawler and Cole for not talking up Wade Barrett enough. One of the other entertaining factors in this show was the continued development of Sheamus. WWE finally figured out how to give the Celtic Warrior a personality and a purpose. His interaction with Batista and laying out of Cena was a good way to make this a triple threat match to give everyone a break from another singles match between Batista and Cena. I also have to say that it is a shame that Batista is leaving the WWE sooner than later. Every week, he seems to click more and more with his heel persona. Before I get to the best part of the show, the filler was really bad this weak, especially Gail Kim as a valet. ... As for the best part of the show with Edge and Randy Orton, WWE has FINALLY figured out how to use Randy Orton, and it just seems surreal to hear his reactions compared to Cena's. The mere fact that he said nothing and relied on his facial expressions and body movement speaks wonders to his character. Edge pointing out what fans were saying about why Edge never got over as a face and how on earth Orton did was well done. Overall, a good show thanks to Miz, Jericho, Orton, Edge, Batista, and Sheamus.
A.A. Norman of Tulsa, Okla. (7.0): Best: Miz and Jericho. Worst: Guest host. I'm sorry, Wayne Brady, but it is clear that the guest host gimmick has jumped the shark. I know you love wrestling (because you told us so repeatedly), but you were not a good fit for this show. With the departure of Mickie James, WWE lost one of the last women's wrestler from this era that actually had some strong character development, so it was good to see them trying to recapture a little bit of that with Eve and Maryse, even if it was just a quick photo shoot backstage. Big kudos to The Miz and Chris Jericho for continuing to entertain us more than anyone else. Let the speculation begin how WWE will combine their entrance music and names for a tag team.
-- 5/3 TNA Impact Reax
John of Cocoa Beach, Fla. (4.0): Best Match: Lethal's Flair impression. Worst Match: Beautiful People tag. I caught the first hour of TNA Impact hoping the big announcement would be Jim Ross. Instead, it was basically TNA admitting they made a mistake and were going back to Thursday Nights, where they should have never left. Jay Lethal's Flair impression was right on the money. All that was missing was a "Tony Schiavone" holding the microphone standing alongside "Flair." I roared out-loud with the Ken Anderson impersonation of The Pope. It made me want to dig out some old Brother Love tapes. Sarita and Taylor Wilde are still a part of TNA? What a surprise, but all I can say is the former Victoria (Tara) should go out as a heel if she is leaving TNA. Meanwhile, it's a cute pairing of Jesse Neal and Shannon Moore as Ink, Inc. Hopefully they won't do flying headbutts on their opponents. ... I missed much of the second hour, but I caught the Hogan-Sting summit. Sting had valid points about WWF and WCW, and how Hogan basically ran each promotion when he was there. TNA missed a golden opportunity to turn Jeff Jarrett heel. They could have had Jarrett and Sting turn on Hogan, and do this storyline on the WWF/E machine destroying the "rasslin" business, and that TNA is not going to become sports entertainment.
Alistair Perry of the U.K., student (2.0): I enjoyed the last two weeks of Impact, but this week returned to amateur hour. It started off interestingly with a compelling interaction between Jay Lethal and Ric Flair, but as soon as TNA started with the run-ins, it was all downhill from there. There were too many people and too much confusion for far too long. Hogan cleaning house was uncalled for, and it was just the start of yet another Impact with too much Hogan from beginning to end. ... Viewers know by now that the pinfall is never the climax in TNA. There's always some kind of post-match beat down, which makes the TNA roster look like a bunch of hotheads. Team Flair need to split up; they suffocate the entire show by interfering in each other's matches and being featured in lengthy segments. I don't want to see Hogan looking tired, overwhelmed, complaining about running TNA, and talking about his messy personal life. It makes me feel tired and down on TNA, too. I don't want to see Tara and Doug Williams complaining about TNA management. Why are so few people happy in TNA? Bizarrely, O.J. vs. Rob Terry may be the best feud going in TNA right now because it's so simple and straightforward. ... I don't mind yet another Eric Young/Band swerve. I'm used to it by now, but it looked so staged the way they excuted it. I think TNA is trying to be as confusing as possible with Sting until the fans simply give up on caring about his heel turn. And I thought the fan-vote was supposed to help decide rankings after Sacrifice, so why is the top-voted guy getting a shot now? This show was a perfect example of why fans can't be allowed to book a show: Wolfe has a terrible win/loss record, he had no business getting a shot at this point, and he was treated accordingly. Here's hoping the move to Thursdays means TNA will slow things down and take a "less is more" approach.
