WWE NXT Reax #1: "So far, it doesn't look like many of the Rookies have the 'it' factor"

-- 6/8 WWE NXT Reax

Devin Kruse of Sioux City, Iowa, college student (5.0): Best: Pros attacking the Rookies. Worst: First two tag team matches. This was an okay beginning to NXT Season Two. So far, it doesn't look like many of the Rookies have the "it" factor. The first four Rookies in matches started to bore me. Husky Harris looks like a joke. Percy Watson looks like someone you might mistake for a pedophile. Eli Cottonwood reminds me of Great Khali (talentless). Titus O'Neil looks like he's just all muscle. The other Rookies look like they have "it." Kaval looks to be the next Daniel Bryan. Mike McGillicutty has good mic skills. Lucky Cannon looks like a future champ, but it's too soon to tell. Alex Riley reminds me of Jack Swagger without the speech impediment. Out of the last four, one of them is going to win NXT. Overall, it looks like WWE knows what they are doing this time - from shortening the season to showing the Rookies what's what. I am looking forward to this season.

Forrest of Des Moines, Iowa: WWE has made wrestling fun again. I hope WWE plays this NXT Invasion correctly and I like where it seems to be headed. Even the finish on NXT was kick-ass and continued to build to uncertain a future, which makes pro wrestling great.

Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (9.0): Best: Rookie videos. Worst: new ring announcer. Let me get the most negative opinion I have about tonight out of the way. Say what you will about Savannah's phrasing in her ring announcing, but she is miles ahead of whoever did the duty on the premiere show. I don't know her name, and I don't want to know. I also had a problem with Michael Cole somehow escaping the NXT destruction when wrestlers Matt Striker and Jerry Lawler didn't. The show should have been handled by Matthews alone (or maybe with Todd Grisham) to sell Cole's fright and shock. Raw assault aside, the first episode showed clear signs that WWE was paying attention to what didn't work in Season 1. The Pros are definitely more "pro" than just a set of named wrestlers to get some rub from. Miz asked a logical question when wondering aloud if the Rookies showed enough in their match. Thankfully, Kaval isn't getting the Daniel Bryan treatment, but we haven't been formally introduced to him yet. Based on first blush of the characters, these guys stick out most: Kaval (his deep voice), Alex Riley (I first took notice of him last August in a Raw dark match against Jamie Noble where he was given plenty of mic time), and Percy Watson (reminds me of Norman Smiley).

Miz stepped up again as a Pro, but a nice surprise came from Zack Ryder when he counseled his rookie O'Neil at ringside when he got tossed out. Morrison also gets a nod for telling Cottonwood not to let Miz get to him, and MVP for his post-match analysis of his Rookie, Percy. I wasn't too thrilled with Striker interrupting McGillicutty, but they were cutting time razor-close at that point. There still could be something to work with, though. And the counter-point angle of the Pros laying in to the Rookies at the end could make for some interesting material, especially if Smackdown gets it, too. It's still too early to gauge the in-ring work as not everyone has had his turn, but on the whole, I believe this season of NXT got off to a much better start than Season 1.
