WWE NXT Reax #1: "I thought Riley vs. Kaval was the best Rookie vs. Rookie match we've seen on NXT thus far"

-- 6/15 WWE NXT Reax

James McCarthy of Cincinnati, Ohio (8.5): Best: Kaval vs. Alex Riley. Worst: Michael Cole and Matt Striker. Wow. NXT impressed me so much with this week's episode (mostly because of the Kaval and Alex Riley match). I've never seen Kaval before, but man, he was great in the match. Riley also had some good takedowns and moves but Kaval impressed me the most and I can't wait for another one of his matches. Cody Rhodes cut a great heel promo and he should have a good match next week with "Lucky Cannon." Laycool was pretty entertaining on commentary (especially Layla). The video with Zack Ryder and Titus O'Neil was, in my opinion, over-acted, but it was a great attempt in the right direction. I'm looking forward to next week's NXT.

Beau of Texas (6.0): Best Match: Alex Riley vs. Kaval. Worst Match: Kingston/McGillicutty vs. Henry/Cannon. Average show this week. I like that the Rookies who didn't wrestle last week all got a little action this week, but the matches weren't anything memorable. I like Kaval's in-ring style, but I can't help but think he won't last long in the WWE because of his size. My biggest complaint this week is that there is no prize for the Pro of the winning Rookie. Without any incentive, I wonder why any of these Pros would even bother to help out his or her Rookie. Perhaps the Pro of the winning Rookie should also win a PPV title match or something. That may give the show a more competitive feel. Also, the Pros should be featured more as trainers rather than evaluators.

Blake Reilly, Frontier Ramp Agent (9.0): Best: Alex Riley vs. Kaval. Worst: None. It's hard to complain when there are two good matches. I thought the Alex Riley vs. Kaval match was by far the best Rookie vs. Rookie match we've seen on NXT, miles ahead of any match we saw last season. The crowd was into it and they both showed they belong here. Also, it looks like WWE learned from last season. I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes camera shot of Zack Ryder talking to his Rookie completely out of character. I'm not sure if it had to be in black and white, but it doesn't really matter. Striker also did a much better job hosting the show, as I really like the post-match reaction interviews. Plus, setting up a Cody Rhodes vs. Lucky Cannon match next week was a great idea to stir up interest. Very good show. I hope this up-swing continues on future shows.
