-- 8/9 WWE Raw Reax
Joe Ward of Cary, N.C. (8.0): Best: Miz-Bourne. Worst: Divas Beach fiasco. A good show to set up Summerslam. What I can't understand is why in the storyline Cena hasn't approached Evan Bourne to join Team WWE. Meanwhile, Bourne's backwards huracanrana on Miz last night was the move of the night. Bourne and Gabriel could interject some great spots into the seven-man tag at Summerslam. Miz continues to get better and better and I'm looking forward to seeing him eventually cash in his briefcase and win the title. ... Orton vs. Sheamus should be a bigger deal and Sheamus shouldn't be afraid of Orton -this should be a match about who is more dangerous, not the champ being in fear. ... Good work from the Nexus last night with a nice angle taking out possibly replacements for Team WWE throughout the show. ... It was good to see Melina back, and they need to get the title on her as soon as possible before setting up a program with Maryse if the Women's Division is going to mean something.
Richard H. of Wilmington, Ohio: As per recent Raws, they did a much better job when they ditched the guest host trash, limited the e-mail interruptions, and concentrated on building the PPV. The best move of the night was the reverse springboard huracanrana by Air Bourne. It allowed him to generate heat without winning the match while The Miz continued to improve every aspect of his game. The Annoying One is becoming a pretty solid entertainer. ... Melina's return to action was welcome and brought so much more credibility to the Divas division, then they promptly flushed all of it with the abysmal three-way tag with the vintage one-piece suits. Even though it was not played as a serious match, just fluff and filler, it still does nothing good for the Divas's reputations. ... As for the Nexus-Cena feud, everything played out like the unimaginative WWE writers have set up. Khali really did not fit, so they got rid of him for dramatic effect. The Miz teasing joining Team WWE was a good angle. His interaction was Cena was great, as Cena looked like they were forcing him to listen to an hour of Jillian's "singing." ... The return of Jericho and Edge to Team WWE still doesn't fit their characters, but it was plausibly played out. And they don't have top play nice come Sunday. They can always bail or back stab at a moment's notice if the least little thing provokes them. I still see it playing out with a Survivor Series type heroic comeback by Cena against Nexus after all his teammates get eliminated or bail on him. And it will go on. A final thought for Summerslam is I see Triple H returning to distract Sheamus and set up a possible triple threat match (again) for the WWE Title.
-- 8/8 TNA Hardcore Justice PPV Reax
Kelsey Avery of Edmonton, Alb., Starbucks barista (8.5): Best: Tommy Dreamer vs. Raven Worst: lack of hardcore matches. Okay, I understand a lot of the criticism for HJ, and while I agree that TNA needs to focus their attention on younger guys - like A.J. and Joe who have been with the company forever, instead of living in the past - I don't agree with the harsh opinions this PPV has been getting. I wasn't around for the old ECW, being kind of a newbie wrestling fan, but I've done my homework and seen DVDs and read up on stuff, so I think I'm qualified to say that, in-ring wise, this was not the worst PPV ever, like so many people have been saying. Granted, most of those guys can't go the way they used to, but they weren't awful. TNA probably could have skipped doing the show on PPV, and could have dedicated an episode of Impact to ECW, but I also understand why they did it the way they did. All, those ECW guys are family to one another, and I feel that Hardcore Justice was less of a 'typical' PPV and more of a way to let them do their thing one more time (and if nobody else, Tommy needed it after being stuck in WWE's 'new ECW' for so long). I wish I'd been in the Impact Zone on Sunday just to really see what the atmosphere was like. ECW (EV2.0, whatever) is obviously a huge part of those guys even still, and they weren't trying to do anything but have a good time. I think everyone who was critical of Hardcore Justice just needs to chill. I enjoyed Hardcore Justice. The End.
Mark of Cincinnati, Ohio (3.75 overall - 7.0 for effort, 0.5 for substance). Best Match: Scorpio vs. Anderson - because of 2 Cold's finisher, which was spectacular; I thought it was the only thing special on the entire PPV. Worst Match: FBI vs. Diamond/Swinger/Kash. Guido vs. Kash would have made for a nice 5-10-minute opening bout. Instead, they delivered a load of the bad stuff the Original ECW produced at times. All of the legends that never set foot into ECW should have had a presence at the ppv. Hogan should have been the JBL/Lawler-like antagonist for this because there was no heat. And why was Abyss with Raven for the "buildup" but nowhere to be found during the Dreamer-Raven match? Overall, it was a waste of my time, other than a few entertaining things here and there.
