-- 8/15 WWE Summerslam PPV Reax
Daniel Jackson of Los Angeles, Calif. (5.0): Best Match: Main event. Worst Match: Divas match. I was at the show live, and as far as a live experience goes, the show was fun. That said, a lot of the finishes hurt the show, as they continuously chose to go a more complicated route than necessary. In a broader sense, the show failed to live up to expectations for me. Team WWE going over didn't hook me for upcoming shows, and the lame DQ finish in the WWE Title match was kind of insulting. Daniel Bryan showing up for the main event was a nice surprise, and I think he added that something extra to ease the sting of the unfortunate finish to the match. On the whole, I spent a good chunk of change to go to this show live and it was worth it as a spectacle. However, if I had stayed home and ordered the PPV, I would have been sorely disappointed.
Mark DiNatale of Los Angeles, Calif. (6.0): I was in attendance at the Staples Center for the PPV. I was excited because Summerslam was one of the original PPV's that, up until Sunday, I had never seen live. I have been a fan of the Nexus angle and was looking forward to Orton vs. Sheamus. I thought the PPV as a whole was just okay for WWE's second biggest PPV of the year. While the Orton vs. Sheamus match was good, I thought the ending really sucked. Having a finish like that for this show was a slap in the face of all the paying fans. I thought the Big Show match sucked; I wanted more from C.M. Punk, and with this being the first time I've seen him live, I was disappointed with how he was booked. I used to enjoy Rey Mysterio, but it seems like his matches now consist of setting up the 619. His match with Kane was okay, and at least it had a decision. Of course, the post-match was great with Undertaker. ... The Nexus vs. Team WWE was better than expected, but it seemed like they barely let Nexus have any offense. Daniel Bryan came out smelling like a rose during that, and Cena seemed off from my perspective. Usually, she shows good intensity. All in all, it was an okay event, but being there live, I was hoping for some stellar match work that never seemed to materialize.
Sam Weiss of San Diego, Calif. (6.0): Best Match: Seven-man elimination. Worst Match: Big Show vs. SES. Just as I said before, the "Nexus attack-on-Raw" angle was just another set-up for a Superman Cena episode. A million other long-time watchers of wrestling and I saw this coming a mile away. The problem with Super Cena is not John Cena, per se, but that this type of show is just all too predictable. Yes, each year brings a new crop of five-year-olds to sell the Super Cena story anew to, but for the rest of us, it's like refried beans refried for the 100th time. Still, the big match was very enjoyable in parts and I snickered when Lawler remarked on Jericho actually hitting the Lionsault for once. (And it was an excellently performed move on the part of Jericho, who seemed to be making up for Otunga being so far away.) Perhaps the best thing coming out of this PPV is that we can look forward to a Daniel Bryan vs. Miz series of matches. Kudos to WWE for finally letting someone win a championship in their own home town - the resplendent Melina is a fitting choice for Divas Champion, but I fear the Diva matches still have nothing more to offer but the good looks of the women. The rest of the show felt unfulfilling.
Mike Clark of Memphis, Tenn., student (7.0): Best Match: WWE-Nexus. Worst Match: WWE-Nexus. I was pretty pleased watching this PPV - many good matches, the return of The Undertaker, and the revelation that Kane was behind his "vegetative state." The Sheamus match proved they are making him into the biggest wuss champion ever and could spill over to Night of Champions. Seeing Melina return, having her win the Divas Title in her hometown, and setting up a rivalry with Lay-Cool could possibly lead into another Night of Champions match to perhaps make her the new Undisputed Women's champion. Here return was one of the biggest pushes for the women's division since they haven't signed Awesome Kong and Beth Phoenix is still out. ... Danielson? Let's just say WWE finally got something right and brought him back. It was a total shift with a guy formerly part of Nexus being part of Team WWE. It would have been great if Cena was eliminated and Danielson got the win, though. All in all, I'll probably buy the PPV on DVD or Blu-ray when it comes out for the memorable events on the show.
Gary Sartori of Windsor Locks, Conn. (5.0): Best Match: WWE-Nexus. Worst Match: Show-SES. This was a below-average pay-per-view until the last match, but even that could only make this an average show. Ziggler-Kofi was okay, nothing special. It's time to move on from Vickie Guerrero's involvement. Even her "Excuse me" gimmick is pretty much old news. The Divas match was what I expected. I'm glad they took the title off Alicia Fox. She wasn't much of a champion for my money. What was the purpose of Lay-Cool attacking Melina after the match? I don't know about Layla, but Michelle McCool deserves better than what WWE is doing with her character right now. Show-SES was probably the worst match of the night. To see Show flopping around the ring and onto the floor was bad enough, but C.M. Punk should dump the rest of the SES and go after titles. Rey-Kane was very good. You knew the Undertaker was going to be in the casket, but it still told a good story. Also showing Taker in a "weakened state" told a very effective story that will no doubt have Taker win the title again somewhere down the line. Rey looked very good, I thought. Sheamus-Orton was a major disappointment. To have a good slugfest end up with a dreadful ending was really lame. WWE is probably going to have Sheamus hold the title until Triple H returns. Triple H wins the title, Orton turns heel, and faces Triple H. ... The last match was excellent! Nexus acquitted themselves quite well, and have some potential. The return of Daniel Bryan was great. He really showed some fantastic agility, and with his background of submission moves, he may very well be a top star. WWE was wrong to get rid of him in the first place. Hopefully, he's around for some time to come. Only one downside to the match, and I thought that was Bret Hart. While I was amazed at what he did with his short time in the ring, the fact is he doesn't belong anywhere near the ring. I thought Cena getting the win over Barrett was the right thing to do. I don't want the Nexus to be some sort of NWO offshoot where they just dominate everyone in sight. Overall, an average PPV.
