Torch Trivia: How much do you know about betrayals in wrestling? Jun 12, 2008 - 1:30:00 PM
Ian Hunter here, running on out of the curtain to the rockin’ and rollin’ sounds of the Rockers! Damn… that’s too much yellow for a man to wear. As pointed out by Jason Powell over at ProWrestling.net (who got to beat me to the punch because of my timing), the attack that Jericho made on Michaels with the obviously candyglass monitor is reminiscent to Micheals tossing Marty Jannetty through the Barber Shop window. Good news folks… the highlight reel is probably coming to a halt now. Bad news, we gotta sit through a feud that already took place over five years ago and already know the outcome of. In tribute to this exchange, this week’s trivia is in tribute to betrayals! But first, we need to answer last week’s questions.
1. Ole Anderson didn’t appear in any of the commercials. Mainly because he had been “thrown out” of the group at the time. J.J. Dillon was counted as the 4th Horsemen at the time.
2. The event was called Capitol Combat ‘90. I can still hear the immortal words of Jim Ross… “Sting has been caged by the Horsemen, but here comes Robocop, Bob!” How the hell did he keep a straight face?
3: E. Josie & The Pussycats. All three sat at ringside, but they didn’t participate in a segment. Good thing too, could you imagine them trying to play a song on the show?
4: B. The Lasagna Of Champions was not on the menu. Sadly, the rest were. Do I dare ask who came up with the bright idea of having “Macho Meatballs.” Ewww.
5: A. Arquette had to pin Bischoff for the title, being that the stipulation was a pin on anyone meant a title change.
A lot of people tried and mostly got four, but no one got all 5 correct. Now what am I going to do with all this leftover Pastamania? Another week of trivia lies ahead. Answer the questions and email your answers to TorchTrivia@gmail.com. We'll post the names of those who got ALL FIVE correct. Good luck to you all!
1. The British Bulldogs were one of the most highly praised tag teams to ever work in professional wrestling. Taking their craft from All-Japan to the WWF, they were unquestionably one of the greatest teams of all time. After an altercation in the WWF, the team went back to All Japan for a couple of years. But in late 1990 Davey Boy was tired of working as a team and made his way back to the WWF with the British Bulldog moniker that he owned the copyrights to. The Dynamite Kid probably wouldn't have really cared about the name, but it was the way Davey Boy got out of All Japan that really caused the feud between the two. What was the excuse Davey Boy used to get out of All Japan?
A. Davey Boy himself was in a car accident.
B. Claimed that Dynamite was in a car accident.
C. Said his wife was pregnant and he was headed home.
D. Said that they officially broke up and that the contract was now void.
E. Told All Japan that he was retiring from the ring.
2. The Four Horsemen had a betrayal act that did well for a few years. With Tully Blanchard and Ole Anderson going in and out of the picture, there was always a spot open for some new gun to fill. Lex Luger was the first to fit the mold of a strong man who helps the group out, then gets bold and challenges Flair for the belt, then gets teams up on and booted out to challenge for the gold later. When it came time to take on Flair, Luger was about to win when the referee called for the bell and stopped the match under the stipulation that Luger had a cut on his head and was bleeding too much for the match to continue. Which state's rule was this under?
A. South Carolina
B. Georgia
C. Kentucky
D. Maryland
E. Rhode Island
3. Next will be a write-in question. Randy Savage had one of the best heel turns in the history of the WWF. Yes, you could see it coming from miles away, but the road getting there was exciting to watch. He and Hulk Hogan were great friends throughout 1988 until after Survivor Series when Miss Elizabeth started helping out Hogan, and eventually became his manager in 1989. Things boiled more after Hogan eliminated Savage from the Royal Rumble while dumping Bad News Brown, and then finally his the betrayal point in a tag match where Savage slapped Hogan in the face instead of tagging him in. What team were they facing when this happened?
4. The Gangstas ruled ECW's tag division in the early 90's much like the Dudleys would for the late 90's. Mustapha and New Jack ran through Smoky Mountain wrestling until the company died, then made their way to ECW and became two-time tag champions. Being one of the many to embrace the idea of having a slew of weapons in the ring from crutches to even a kitchen sink. But the team split after New Jack hit Mustapha with a guitar during a match with the Dudleys. Mustapha didn't return to ECW television for two years until 1999 when he came back to reform with New Jack at a PPV, and subsequently Mustapha got his revenge and started a whole new feud with his old partner. At what PPV did this take place?
A. Guilty As Charged
B. Heat Wave
C. November 2 Remember
D. Crossing The Line
E. Barely Legal
5. Our last one will be a write-in question. So anyone who's anyone knows the main portion to the Andy Kaufman/Jerry Lawler feud, so we're going to skip over all that fun and get down to the later part of the feud. After months of trying to get rid of Lawler by means of bribery, some of the people Kaufman was looking to pay turned on him and started beating on Kaufman. This forced Andy to go to Lawler for help, which Lawler agreed to as long as Andy stopped wrestling. But it was all a ruse as Kaufman blinded Lawler during a tag-match. Who did Kaufman say he was fighting with and needed Lawler's help to beat?
