WWE News: Prosecutors file papers in Benoit case against Dr. Astin, contend excessive steroids prescribed Oct 8, 2007 - 6:37:52 PM
Chris Benoit was prescribed an amount of steroids by Dr. Phil Astin that far exceeded a normal amount, say prosecutors in new court papers, reports the Associated Press today.
The AP story reports: "Steroid use has lingered as a theory behind the killings, since anabolic steroids were found in Benoit's home and tests conducted by authorities showed Benoit had roughly 10 times the normal level of testosterone in his system when he died."
Astin's one-time attorney, Manny Arora, who spoke on cable news programs in defense of Dr. Astin, has stepped away from representing Astin because Astin couldn't afford to pay him his fees.
Keller's Analysis: It's interesting that the AP is referring to the testosterone prescribed to Benoit as "anabolic steroids." WWE initially responded with celebratory glee at the news that "only had testosterone, not anabolic steroids" were found in Benoit's toxicology results. Afterward, numerous doctors and experts were widely quoted in media reports saying that testosterone is the basic building block of anabolic steroids and is considered an anabolic steroid. WWE's glee seemed to be based largely on the notion that testosterone can be legally prescribed, however it's classified, for non bodybuilding purposes, whereas other anabolic steroids would have been considered strictly prescribed for muscle-building reasons.
