WWE News: WWE star calls out TNA for a "b.s. maneuver" that affected Ring of Honor

WWE star C.M. Punk says TNA pulled a "b.s. maneuver" in February 2006 when TNA requested wrestlers on their roster not attend a Ring of Honor card in New York City to make a TNA PPV in Orlando one day early.

Punk was in OVW and not yet on the main WWE roster. He says WWE allowed him to fill a vacated spot to save the ROH card.

"My old company Ring of Honor ... ran into a whole bunch of trouble with their competitor, TNA, pulling guys off their shows," Punk told Alfonso Castillo in Newsay. "They had a show on Long Island that on paper was set to be really great, and turned out to be a real cluster disaster."

Punk recalled the story of TNA deciding to have ROH wrestlers who were on the TNA card fly in an extra day earlier because of a snowstorm on the East Coast. "It was like real cutthroat, BS maneuver, but that’s the wrestling business," Punk said.

Austin Aries decided to wrestle the ROH card, then he arrived at the TNA PPV a few hours late after trying to get out of the snowstorm. He was then suspended by TNA.

In today's interview, Punk thanked WWE for helping out ROH by allowing him to appear on the show, where he was in the main event with Bryan Danielson against Jimmy Rave & Adam Pearce. (Danielson wrestled twice on the card.)

"I asked my office if I could go help out because they (ROH) were going to lose their ass on the show, and they graciously - and this is one of the coolest things - they told me I could go," Punk said. "I couldn’t be advertised. They give me the list of rules, and I just kind of showed up unannounced and I wrestled."

Caldwell's Analysis: I remember this situation very clearly. Aries and Roderick Strong were wrestling for TNA at the time and decided to stay in New York for the ROH card. On the other hand, Homicide, Alex Shelley, and Jay Lethal decided to leave early to ensure they made the TNA PPV. Aries was made an example by TNA management for disobeying an order, which I viewed as unfair to ROH, but reasonable from TNA's perspective of not wanting a bunch of wrestlers unable to make a PPV card they already advertised to paying customers. Aries was vocal against TNA, but he understood TNA's position. "They were justified in the actions they took and I was justified in what I said," Aries said at the time.
