WWE News: Analyzing the chances of Jerry Lawler finally getting the WrestleMania match he's never had

WWE star Chris Jericho has antagonized legendary wrestlers on a weekly basis to set up a match at WrestleMania 25 (and subtly promote the "Legends of WrestleMania" video game).

On commentary during these segments, Jerry Lawler has expressed an extreme level of disdain for Jericho's antics to enhance the storyline.

The storyline was originally set up for Mickey Rourke to face Jericho in a fight at WrestleMania. WWE called an audible after Rourke backed out, and the storyline is set up for a former wrestling legend to face Jericho. Jerry Lawler seems to be an obvious choice.

Lawler has broadcasted WWE programming for over 15 years and wrestles on occasion. He recently said in an interview with the U.K. Sun that he could wrestle a regular schedule again, but he's not sure how well his body would hold up.

For the Jericho program, though, Lawler would just need to train for one match at WrestleMania. His former broadcast partner, Jim Ross, says the chances of Lawler wrestling at WrestleMania decreases with each passing year.

"I would suggest that the chances of Lawler wrestling at a WrestleMania are lessening each year simply because of Mother Nature," Ross said on jrsbarbq.com. "I sure hope that Jerry gets the opportunity but if it doesn't happen this year chances lessen for next year and so on."

Caldwell's Analysis: Wade Keller weighed in on the issue earlier this week. The good thing about this program with Jericho is that WWE hasn't set up the audience for any disappointment if Jericho's opponent doesn't turn out to be Steve Austin or Hulk Hogan. They haven't made it clear where the storyline is going, so Lawler stepping in wouldn't be viewed as a disappointment.

The issue is that Lawler needed about two or three months of quality TV build-up to remind fans of his accolades and why he would deserve the opportunity to face Jericho. He's been on color commentary for so long that WWE fans simply know him as the guy who tells jokes with bland Michael Cole. WWE would need to re-build Lawler's image for this to be a compelling match-up, but if there's ever a chance for Lawler to get that WrestleMania match, this would be the year.

Even if it's not a singles match, they could easily create Jericho & JBL vs. Lawler & Insert Legend. Could be Hogan, Austin, Piper, Rhodes, Steamboat, or any number of former legends. It could be a legends battle royale to play up the Gimmick Battle Royale at the last WrestleMania in Houston (WM 17).
