WWE News: WWE announces early PPV buy figures for WrestleMania 25 - results fall short of company expectations

WWE announced today that WrestleMania 25 generated $43 million in total worldwide PPV revenue. That means the PPV fell short of WWE's domestic goal of 600,000 PPV buys to reach the 1.0 million buy total that company executives predicted prior to WrestleMania.

Based on WWE's announcement, the company generated approximately 469,500 total PPV buys in the domestic market. The calculation is based on WWE's 60 percent domestic vs. 40 percent international PPV buy split in the most-recent financial period.

The $43 million worldwide PPV revenue translates into $25.8 million in gross PPV revenue in the U.S. and Canada market. Dividing the domestic share into the $54.95 price tag results in approximately 469,500 total buys domestically.

WWE's press release this morning focused on the company setting worldwide box office records with the combination of live event ticket sales and merchandise sales. Overall, the one-day event on Sunday, April 5 generated approximately $52 million.

WWE announced $6.9 million in ticket revenue at Reliant Stadium in Houston. The WrestleMania Axxess session on Sunday also generated an additional $0.5 million to bring the one-day ticket total to $7.4 million.

WWE also generated $1.5 million in merchandise sales on Sunday at Reliant Center.

Caldwell's Analysis: Perhaps when all numbers are accounted for internationally, WWE will still be able to tout 1.0 million PPV buys, but the domestic share coming in below 500,000 buys for pro wrestling's biggest PPV of the year is disappointing. Whether it was because of the economy, the price tag, or the lackluster PPV build-up, WWE needs to evaluate how they weren't able to sell 500,000 PPV buys for Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker.
