WWE Smackdown TV report
July 28, 2009
Baltimore, Md.
Report by A. Madison, Torch reader

Dark Match: Drew McIntyre defeats Slam Master J. Crowd gets behind Slam Master throughout. McIntyre wins with an underhook DDT.

Smackdown taping for July 31

-Opening video displays Jeff Hardy winning the World Championship.

-There is no pyro to begin Smackdown. Instead, Justin Roberts is in the ring.

- Jeff Hardy is introduced as he comes out to a huge pop. He taunts the crowd before grabbing the microphone. Similar promo to the one he did last time he won the championship. Ironic that both speeches happen in Baltimore. Hardy says that this is a dream that he doesn't want to wake up from. He then goes on to say that C.M. Punk gets a re-match against whoever the champion may be at the time. The mildly confused crowd then finds out there will be a World Championship match tonight. Jeff Hardy will face John Morrison. Hardy respects Morrison but, says he doesn't plan on losing the belt just yet. He thanks the fans and not too long after Cryme Tyme comes out to a great pop.

(1) Cryme Tyme (Shad Gaspar & JTG) defeated The Hart Dynasty (D.H. Smith & Tyson Kidd) to become #1 Contenders to the Unified Tag Titles at Summerslam. Solid match from both teams. It's cool to see that Cryme Tyme are getting pushed because they are over. Dynasty did a great job isolating Shad during the match. JTG wins the match when he takes Kidd down with that swinging neck thing he does.

After the match, Chris Jericho & The Big Show come onto the stage. They congratulate Cryme Tyme but tell them that the party is over. Cryme Tyme retaliates calling Jericho/Show Han Solo ad Chewbacca. Shad speaks in ewok. They go back and forth for a bit. Not a bad promo by both teams. Jericho shines as usual.

(2) Melina & Eve beat Women's champion Michelle McCool & Layla. Melina gets a great pop. Fairly short match here. Eve plays victim to Layla and McCool. The finish is Melina out on the mat after a kick from McCool and the champ goes for her finisher but Melina reverses it into her seated powerbomb maneuver.

-Backstage, C.M. Punk cuts a promo. He acts innocent and says that he will face the winner whoever that may be.

(3) IC champion Rey Mysterio & Finlay defeat Dolph Ziggler & Mike Knox. Rey gets a huge huge pop. Very solid work by all four men. Knox did a crossbody on Rey that was devastating. I think Ziggler forgot a few spots but he looked good all in all. Knox looked good and Finlay is Finlay. Rey won when he rolled up Ziggler.

-John Morrison cuts a promo backstage. He talks about respecting Jeff. He also talks about how neither guy will hold back.

(4) The Great Khali vs. Charlie Haas went to a No Contest. Khali squash until Kane comes out from under the ring. Khali almost gets his hands on the Kane, but Kane flees. He grabs Singh in the process.

(5) World Hvt. champion Jeff Hardy beat John Morrison to retain the World Heavyweight Title. Morrison is out to a good pop, but Hardy is out to an awesome pop. Some Morrison fans, but clearly a Hardy audience. Great back and forth action by both men. Lots of nearfalls and at one point, Morrison kicks out of the Swanton. Morrison sets Hardy up for Starship Pain, but Hardy gets his knees up. Hardy then hits Twist of Fate and a second Swanton. Hardy wins.

After the match, Hardy celebrates before Punk comes out. Punk shakes Hardy's hand and raises it. He then clocks him in the head with the mic. Punk proceeds to attack Hardy in and out of the ring. He tosses him over the announce table to end Smackdown.

Dark Match Main Event: Jeff Hardy defeats C.M. Punk in a Steel Cage Match.

(1) Jeff Hardy
(2) Rey Mysterio
(3) John Morrison
(4) Cryme Tyme

Biggest Heat
(1) C.M. Punk
(2) Jericho/Show

Notes: Despite the C.M. Punk reactions as of late, there were more Punk t-shirts worn than anything else that I saw tonight. There were also boatloads of those Hardy sleeves worn by kids. And you know there were many Rey masks.
