WWE/TNA News: Kevin Nash interview - Why he didn't re-sign with WWE, says WWE will fire a wrestler whenever they feel like it

By James Caldwell, Torch assistant editor

TNA wrestler Kevin Nash said he was close to signing with WWE in October 2008, but he took one look at the clauses in his potential WWE contract and said "no thanks." The deal-breaker, he said, wasn't being asked to dye his hair, but WWE saying they could fire him anytime they felt like it.

Nash talked with Vince McMahon around the time he returned to TNA at the Bound for Glory PPV and was scripted to turn on Samoa Joe, allowing Sting to capture the TNA World Hvt. Title.

Nash said the money McMahon was prepared to offer him made him stand up and say, "wow," but he couldn't put himself in a position financially to be fired with zero notice.

"When I first signed with them, the contract said that you were guaranteed 10 dates for $150. That was like the WWF, you know? In other words: You sign, we own you, and you can make fifteen hundred bucks," Nash told Alfonso Castillo of Newsday. "And then the second time I came back, it was much more extensive with the merchandising and the worldwide rights.

"Well, the last contract I got – and I’ve been doing this for a long time. I don’t need a lawyer to read a contract for me anymore – it gets to termination. It has about 95,000 clauses as to why they can terminate you. And, I swear to God, the last line is: 'or for no reason whatsoever.'"

Nash said the other clauses in the contract required him to visit a cardiologist and get a brain scan for previous concussions. He said all of that didn't matter, though.

"Basically you could get rid of me just because one morning you wake up and look at me and say, 'You know what? I just don’t like the way you look.' I said, 'I just don’t think I want to put myself in that position.'"

Nash said he wanted to work a program with Shawn Michaels again to come full circle from his first run in WWE as Diesel. He said McMahon offered him 120 dates per year, which would be close to a full-time schedule considering traveling. Nash reasoned he could have handled it with Shawn Michaels doing all of the work.

"I knew that I’d be with Shawn and I was going to count on being on his coat tails and saying, 'Shawn, go do that thing you do.'" Nash said he wanted to work with Triple H as well, but mainly have a 2010 photo of himself standing over Michaels doing the "double bicep pose" to have on the wall in his house.

Caldwell's Analysis: What's so interesting about Nash, Michaels, and Hunter - the "sitting on the couch talking wrestling" group - is that they seem to be negative on the future of wrestling considering the lack of stars ready to make money, but they come across like they don't want to do anything about it. Nash said he wanted to come back to WWE to work Michaels. No mention of working with a new talent. Hunter buried Legacy on national TV last night. Hunter spent most of 2005 and 2006 burying younger stars on TV. Michaels could have come back from a four-month hiatus and picked up a program with someone like Swagger, Miz, or ...well...that's about the only options on Raw, but instead, DX is having yet another reunion to bury the 2009 version of Spirit Squad despite Ted DiBiase, Jr. having a movie coming out in five months that will bomb if WWE doesn't get some momentum behind Ted. Perhaps they've given up on trying to elevate new talent because they've made their money and Hunter is set for life being part of the McMahon family. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy to sit around and say there are no stars to replace them when they aren't doing anything to make new stars.
