The history of early deaths in the wrestling business and WWE's Wellness Policy were covered by a mainstream Human Resources publication this week, with WWE continuing to claim they shouldn't be held responsible for many wrestlers's lifestyles or personal choices.

"We don't know what they took as kids. We don't know what they've done after they've left," said WWE spokesman Robert Zimmerman. "So the only thing we can do is obviously do what we're trying to do, which is make them abide by the Talent Wellness Program when they are contracted by us and then offer any kind of rehab assistance after they've left."

The story by Human Resources Executive Online focused on the "grueling lifestyle" leading to some wrestlers turning to "pain medication, drugs or alcohol -- not to mention steroids." WWE did not address the rigors of the WWE schedule possibly influencing "personal choice."

Many wrestlers have recently drawn attention to pain pill addiction being one of the key problems in the wrestling business with wrestlers taking medication for bumps and bruises, pills to get up in the morning, and pills to go to sleep at night. (Read JBL's blog on the issue.)

Caldwell's Analysis: Classic example of WWE wanting to have its cake and eat it too. WWE wants to own the wrestling industry, act like there's no other promotion in the world, yet defer responsibility for the issue of wrestler deaths plaguing the wrestling industry during WWE's rise to prominence over the last 25 years.
