Rob Simmons, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Connecticut opposite former WWE CEO Linda McMahon, was back in the news today after announcing details on a new campaign ad for the primary election in August.

Two months ago, after McMahon won the Republican party's endorsement, Simmons announced that he would cease campaigning, but would keep his name on the ballot for the August 10 primary vote.

Today, Simmons's campaign announced they will be running a new TV ad reminding potential voters he's on the ballot. The Associated Press published a report on Simmons dipping his toe back in the race with a headline: "Conn. Senate dropout reminds voters he's on ballot."

"I felt that it was a fair thing and a loyal thing to my supporters to let them know that I was on the ballot," he told the AP. Simmons said he was not officially restarting his Senate campaign.

McMahon's campaign spokesman, Ed Patru, said they're confused about Simmons's tactics ahead of next month's Republican election.

"Over the past two months, he's been engaged in a very strange and erratic effort to reconcile his promise not to run with his desire to return to Washington," Patru said in a statement. "Today, we are as confused as everyone else."

Simmons's campaign sent an email this evening addressing the issue of whether he's actually campaigning or not. "The ads, which are in the nature of a public service announcement, are designed to present the voting public with the information they need to make an informed choice in the primary," Simmons said in a statement.

The TV ad will read: "Today, it's important to vote with your heart and your head. Bailouts and tax increases have crippled the economy and cost us jobs. Small business is our backbone. Let's help them. National security must remain strong. Put your trust in the candidate who is and will be an advocate for veterans. These issues will have a lasting effect on our children. In the Republican primary on August tenth, you do have a choice. I'm Rob Simmons, I'm still on the ballot, and I approved this message."

Caldwell's Analysis: It still doesn't seem like McMahon has much to worry about come August after already receiving the Republican nomination in Connecticut. Simmons will likely take away a good amount of the vote for McMahon because he was campaigning well against McMahon, whose money seemed to win out for the nomination, but it shouldn't be enough to give Peter Schiff a chance to sneak in as the third candidate in the race.
