The Connecticut Mirror published a report today raising questions on what Linda McMahon, the former WWE CEO, is promising to potential voters if she's elected as Connecticut Senator.

Throughout the campaign, the majority of stories on the state-level and in national publications have focused on McMahon's wrestling background. The Mirror tries to sift through her campaign's web of protection to find out what her political plans are. The results are inconclusive.

"The reality of her U.S. Senate campaign has been one of tight discipline and message control, crafted to give no offense as McMahon offers safe promises of tough fiscal medicine," the Mirror reports. "On the campaign trail, her audiences say they love what she says, even as McMahon barely hints at what she means when talking about slashing federal spending."

McMahon reportedly will not take part in any public debates before the Republican primary election on August 10 to discuss her political agenda. Asked to detail some of her views, McMahon said she won't on the campaign trail.

"I just don't believe that the campaign trail is the right place to talk about that," McMahon said. "I can certainly tell you I'm not adverse to talking in the right time or forum about what we need to do relative to our entitlements. I mean, Social Security is going to go bankrupt. Clearly, we have to strengthen that."

McMahon touted her "real world experience" negotiating deals on behalf of WWE when she was the company's CEO. McMahon said that's the experience she needs to call for change in Washington, D.C. if elected Senator.

The Mirror concludes: "Again, how exactly she would do that is a conversation for another time, another forum. Some cards won't be shown until after Nov. 2." November 2 is the general election where McMahon could potentially face Democratic candidate Richard Blumenthal.

Caldwell's Analysis: The timing of this story is interesting. Greg Parks and I discussed this angle of the McMahon coverage in last Thursday's PWTorch Livecast while examining McMahon's campaign at around the one-year mark. There are two main reasons why mainstream reports continue to focus on McMahon's wrestling background: (a) she hasn't owned up to it and continues to deflect questions rather than give complete, truthful answers and (b) there's not much else to cover. McMahon has been vague on her political plans and hasn't given voters a very clear picture on how she plans to carry out the plans she has mentioned.
