WWE CEO Vince McMahon talked to the Associated Press in an attempt to defend his wife, Linda McMahon, who has faced criticism throughout her U.S. Senate campaign in Connecticut related to her WWE background.

The AP's report headlines with "Vince McMahon sick of Sen. campaign WWE smackdowns." The report was picked up by national news outlets ABC News and the Washington Post, where Vince says he believes Linda's opponents are taking "unfair" shots at her.

The story only focuses on WWE's TV product, with no mention of the real issues concerning wrestler health in WWE and the pro wrestling industry. Vince said Linda's detractors have "taken snippets of footage out of context" related to various sex scenes on WWE TV through the years.

Vince says Linda shouldn't be held responsible for what aired on WWE TV in the past because she "did not provide the soap opera elements." He said WWE has "made some mistakes," but has moved away from "shock TV" to "more family-friendly scenes."

Linda McMahon has a showdown with Republican candidates Rob Simmons and Peter Schiff on Tuesday, August 10 with the Republican nomination for Connecticut Senator on the line.
