WWE News: John Cena interviewed on how long he'll continue to wrestle, "sports entertainer" vs. "pro wrestler," why the locker room doesn't discuss movie projects

WWE wrestler John Cena covered several WWE-related topics in an interview with UGO.com promoting the "Legendary" movie due out next Friday. The following are highlights of Cena's interview.

-- When asked about balancing WWE and movies, Cena gave the regular response that he'll continue to work full-time for WWE (where the money is) and continue to make movies working around his WWE schedule. Cena was also asked what he'll do after his pro wrestling career.

"Fishing. I'm going to relax. I'm going to do this (wrestling) for quite some time, as long as I physically can. I'll be a member of the WWE, an active member of the WWE for as long as I can perform at the level I'm currently at," Cena said. "When it's time to go, it's time to go, but I won't go at all before then. I'm going to try to continue to do both (wrestling and movies)."

-- Cena, sounding very corporate, propped up the "sports entertainer" label for WWE's pro wrestlers, saying WWE's goal, especially with the movies division, is to show their talent are more than "just an old school wrasslers."

"WWE has coined the term 'sports entertainer' and it couldn't be more correct. So many athletes nowadays are trying to break into various forms of entertainment and really falling flat on their face because they are finding out that you really have to have the 'it' factor. Not just myself, but all of our guys have it," Cena said.

"I hope people watch 'Legendary' and say, 'Man that was a good movie,' and don't even mention my name, because I don't want them to think of anything related to Monday Night Raw or WWE programming. That's the goal of WWE Studios, period."

-- Cena said one aspect of the movies division he would like to see more of are bio pics on classic figures from the wrestling industry, similar to the upcoming Gorgeous George movie, with focus on the likes of Andre the Giant, Vince McMahon, Hulk Hogan, and Ric Flair.

"An element that I'd like to see done, is dramatic, biographical pieces on some of our famous wrestlers, some of our famous icons," Cena said. "I'd like to see an Andre the Giant piece, I know there's a Gorgeous George piece that's in the making and I'd like to see a 'Life of Hulk Hogan' or Vince McMahon. Those are very interesting stories to tell about our industry that will never get made, but I hope someone changes their mind."

-- One of the more interesting comments in the interview is Cena talking about how the WWE locker room views wrestlers "taking time off" to film movies or TV appearances. Cena said it's not a popular subject to discuss in the locker room.

"Dude, it's all taboo. We work so hard in our industry. Getting a movie role or going to film and TV is viewed as the golden ticket," he said. "It's like, 'You're getting time off?' It's almost like a soldier getting some leave time. 'We're still here in the trenches man, where are you going?' It's a very, very taboo subject. There's not a lot of movie talk around the WWE locker room."

Caldwell's Analysis: The last quote is the best example of why WWE needs a structured off-season where everyone - on a rotation or a planned schedule or a seasonal format - gets time off to live a normal life, let their body heal, and go home to spend time with their families without having to feel guilty for actually taking time off. Cena's comment comes across like the wrestlers are brain-washed into thinking additional work away from the WWE schedule is "time off" or a "vacation."
