After my weekly chat with James Caldwell was posted last night, a reader suggested Bryan Danielson as a possible foil for C.M. Punk in the ongoing Straight-Edge Society storyline. I've always thought that the way Punk's attempts at converting people would end is when someone picked out of the crowd refused to take part in Punk's ceremony. It would be a great way to get a new star over, and Danielson could be that new star.

A Danielson-Punk feud would be a boon for the Smackdown brand, though Danielson seems like he's a guy closer to the Straight-Edge lifestyle of Punk than the wild and carefree spirit of Punk's former nemesis, Jeff Hardy. Danielson could still be a conservative character, but think Punk is too extreme in his beliefs and trying to get everyone to be like him. Danielson (or whoever rebukes Punk) doesn't have to be like Hardy; he can be a normal guy who doesn't smoke or drinks only occasionally, but just doesn't like Punk's message or how he delivers it.

Danielson has that every-man image as well that would be easier for fans to identify with. However, with rumors of Punk facing Rey Mysterio at Wrestlemania, it makes one wonder if Mysterio will be the one to perhaps interrupt a head-shaving or speech from Punk and attempt to put him in his place. That, to me, is the other way this angle can play out, but I'd much prefer to see WWE get behind a new star to battle with Punk. Danielson could fit the bill.
