Overall thoughts: (5.0) – A thumbs in the middle show to be sure. “Bound For Glory,” which is billed as TNA’s biggest PPV of the year was a letdown in many respects. The show was filled with some big video packages and seemed to be capable on paper of living up to its billing, but in the end the booking brought things down.
The show started off with the X division title match with Aries defending against Kendrick. They put on a good match that set the tone well, but TNA is seriously devaluing their X division and Tag Team titles by putting them on the pre-show and in the opening match of the PPV. Aries is really good, as is Kendrick, but the action never went to the next level to make it a must-see match.
The show took a turn for the worse here, as Joe vs. Morgan vs. Crimson and RVD vs. Lynn were just not very good matches. Joe vs. Morgan vs. Crimson saw Joe get cheered, despite playing the heel role. He had some nice spots, but the story just didn’t click as he had to work around Morgan and Crimson in the ring. It’s a shame to see Joe in a spot like this when he’s capable of so much more. RVD and Lynn tried to set back the clock, but they had a match that was filled with dangerous bumps, which made it hard to watch at times.
TNA booked too many stipulation matches on this show, as there was a Full Metal Mayhem match, I Quit match, and a Philadelphia Street Fight featured on the card. The Anderson vs. Bully Ray Street Fight had some fun moments, but it was hard to get into it given that there had just been a Full Metal Mayhem match previously on the show. Bully Ray has reinvented himself and could probably draw many at this stage if given the proper push. His pre-match promo was really well done.
The I Quit match was set up with a great video package chronicling the feud between Styles and Daniels. They seemed to be just getting to making the match exciting after a slow start when Daniels quit because Styles was about to attack him with a screwdriver. It was a lousy finish that hampered an average match. To make matters worse, Daniels came back out and attacked Styles near the entrance ramp after the match and declared himself the winner.
Velvet Sky winning the Knockouts Title was a nice moment and the storyline with Karen Jarrett as the guest referee played out well in the end. The action during the match was fine, but once again, the match was there to play out an angle instead of providing a satisfying in-ring match.
Hogan vs. Sting for control of the company was a lot of fun. Hogan took some bumps during the match and the crowd was red hot for the action. There was also an element of suspense when it was revealed earlier in the show that the referee was Bischoff’s son. The post-match stuff was a lot of fun to watch as well when Hogan turned face and saved String from Fortune’s attack.
Of course, the downside of the Hogan vs. Sting match and post-match action is that they took so much time that the TNA Hvt. Championship match between Angle and Roode was left with very little time to play out. Roode was red hot coming into this match and put on a darn good performance with Angle given the amount of time they had to tell their story. However, the finish stunk. It didn’t stink because Roode lost, but instead it stunk because of how he lost.
In the end, Hogan stole the spotlight once again and creative let down the talent that works so hard for this company with screwy finishes and multiple stipulation matches up and down the card. There was enough here for the show to not be a total thumbs down, but this was a huge letdown given the stage and buildup of Roode.
