Introduction to today's TNA flashback from five years ago: Styles wins NWA World Title for first time Jun 12, 2008 - 12:27:11 PM
Five years ago, A.J. Styles captured the NWA World Title for the first time in a three-way match with Raven and Jeff Jarrett. It was TNA's attempt to elevate their homegrown Styles as a top tier star outside of the X Division. The main event also parlayed into an announcement of Jarrett saying he'd face Styles in a tag match and his partner would be Sting. You'll notice in this report numerous mentions of Vince Russo, who during this booking tenure, was trying to capitalize (in as much as that was possible) on his exposure on WCW television as a top heel character.
Also on the card are some familiar current TNA names such as Shark Boy and Chris Sabin, and a lot of names who didn't stick with the roster such as Jilio Deniro, Kid Kash, Erik Watts, and Devon Storm. Justin Credible and Jerry Lynn were part of an interview segment with Scott Hudson that reflected on their ECW experiences, similar to the current sitdown interviews with Mike Tenay and Sting talking about his history. The crowd also pelted Glen Gilberti (Disco Inferno) with "boring" chants as he stroked on about his rivalry with Russo and the SEX gimmick. Russo charged Gilbert with a baseball bat and swore at him before they had a pullapart brawl. And people wonder why TNA's Wednesday night PPV concept didn't catch fire.
