Tonight's WWE Raw started with a video package on the "dissension" within Team Cena/Jericho that blew up on last week's show. The ominous movie-style music helped tell the story of the team on the verge of exploding leading up to Summerslam vs. Nexus.

Arena: Michael Cole opened the show by saying the "situation is dire" for Team Raw. Jerry Lawler plugged Randy Orton vs. The Miz as the main event tonight. Also, the exclusive trailer for John Cena's upcoming "Legendary" movie. The movie comes out September 10.

In-ring: Edge came out first to start the in-ring portion of the show. Cole said Edge is at the heart of dissension within Team Raw after he questioned Great Khali's inclusion in the team. They're officially calling it "Team WWE" at this point. Ya know, because Nexus could take down the entire company. Edge took the mic and said he really tried last week, but he has to go with his gut right now: himself. Edge recapped his failed babyface run at the start of 2010, saying the audience let him down, just like his Summerslam team.

Edge said he doesn't respect John Cena. He doesn't trust Chris Jericho. He doesn't have any faith in Great Khali. He barely knows R-Truth and John Morrison. And, Bret Hart? Edge skipped over him and said he has a proposal to do things his way. He challenged Wade Barrett one-on-one tonight. Suddenly, R-Truth's music interrupted to bring out Truth in a plain white t-shirt and pants. Edge said he doesn't want anyone coming down here; "What part of that don't you understand?"

Truth said Edge challenging Barrett to a match isn't going to solve anything. He said he doesn't have to listen to Cena, but he needs to listen to him. Truth paused to let that sink in. He asked Edge when was the last time he had to fight for everything...everything. Truth said they're fighting for their lifestyle, their friends, their families, and the WWE Universe. (Cheers.) "It's us, it's we," he said. Truth said if they don't fight together, Nexus wins. He told Edge to stop thinking about himself and pull his head out of his rear end. "That's the truth," he said.

Edge did his classic cocky mannerisms to no-sell Truth's speech, then said he'll take out Wade Barrett tonight to cut off the snake's head. Edge asked Truth if he's going to leave nicely or if he'll have to spear him. Cue up the Raw GM with the MacBook interruption. Cole walked up to the Raw podium and opened the laptop. Cole started reading without even opening anything on the computer. They also cut to a shot of Cole reading off a piece of paper rather than the laptop. Annoying, or he's the Raw GM. Cole said the GM has booked Edge vs. Barrett...next. Truth told Edge good luck because he's on his own. Nice involvement of Truth in a strong promo exchange. Good start to the show.

[Commercial Break]

In-ring: Wade Barrett came out to the ring by himself to face Edge. Cole and Lawler debated what power Barrett has over the other Nexus members to fight under a unified flag; "it's almost blind faith," Cole said. Lawler said they understand strength by numbers.

[Q2]

1 -- EDGE vs. WADE BARRETT

Edge dropped Barrett face-first in the corner early on, then slingshot him across the top rope. The action moved to the floor where Barrett rammed Edge into the side of the ring apron. Back in the ring, Barrett beat down Edge and continued to work on his head/neck region. Edge teased a comeback and they bumped heads for a double knock-down. Cole and Lawler continued to talk up Nexus being "completely unstoppable" when they have a numbers advantage, which Lawler found out during the seven-on-seven last week. Edge then made a full comeback with a smattering of cheers behind him before scoring a close nearfall. Edge proceeded to go up top, which gave away a counter was coming since Edge never goes up top, and Barrett cut him off with a boot to the head. Barrett teased his overhead slam, but Edge countered with a spike DDT. Edge then teased a big spear in the corner, but Barrett saw it coming and quickly slipped to the outside.

Barrett smiled and mouthed to Edge, "No way." He then motioned to the back and Nexus stormed ringside. Edge saw it coming and hightailed it over the guardrail to the top of the 100-level seats. Edge stared down at Nexus while inside the crowd. Barrett signaled he was "this close" to finishing Edge. Barrett and Nexus regrouped on the outside to conclude the segment. Cole and Lawler just moved right along to the next plug, not even acknowledging a finish to the match or any decision. The announcers are produced to move along, but it's a very annoying and poor habit WWE has developed lately not announcing a decision. It undercuts the audience's investment in a match.

WINNER: No Decision announced in 7:00. Decent TV match for what aired before the non-finish. Barrett certainly carries himself well in the ring and does a decent job maintaining the group's credibility despite the lack of experience in the ring. (*1/2)

Still to come: Randy Orton vs. The Miz.

[Commercial Break. First of likely many "The Other Guys" commercial spot featuring Will Farrell and Mark Wahlberg.]

Backstage: Edge made his way backstage asking people where John Cena is. "Where were you?!" Edge shouted as Cena, pointing out he was fighting for his life by himself. Cena said he figured he would listen to Edge and not come down to the ring. Cena mocked Edge for his show-opening promo saying he didn't want anyone to come to the ring. Cena said their only chance of beating Nexus is if they stay together in the seven-on-seven. Edge told him good luck with that. "I quit!" Edge said. Cena grimaced as Jericho slowly walked up behind him. Cena said it must be quitting season. Jericho said Cena needs to quit because he's no good for WWE or the team. He said if Cena lives and breathes for this company, as he says, then he needs to quit the team. Jericho said perhaps they have it out in the ring. "Loser Leaves the Summerslam Team for good," he said. Cena said Jericho is crazy doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing - staying together while Nexus is laughing at them. "Yes or no?" Jericho quietly asked. Cena said it's a yes. He walked off, frustrated. Jericho smirked.

[Q3] Announcers: Cole and Lawler talked up the Team WWE dissension before Cole mentioned that Bret Hart is at home in Calgary preparing for Summerslam. He segued to a Summerslam flashback featuring Bret Hart.

Summerslam Flashback: 1991 at MSG. Mr. Perfect Curt Hennig vs. Bret Hart for the IC Title. Greatness in the ring. Greatness on commentary with Gorilla and Heenan, plus Piper. They showed Hart capturing the IC Title and celebrating with his parents.

Backstage: From Bret Hart, they cut to Great Khali standing in the back with a scowl on his face. John Morrison was talking to him about needing to stick together. Ranjin Singh translated a joke on Morrison. He told Khali to think about sticking together, plus good luck with Ted DiBiase tonight. Morrison walked off, then Nexus walked up to him. Michael Tarver and David Otunga were representing the group. Tarver said they didn't attack him last week because they respect Khali. Otunga said the word is Khali is off the team if he loses to DiBiase tonight. Tarver told him the door is always open to be part of a team that respects him. Singh translated and told Khali to think about this.

[Commercial Break]

2 -- Divas champion ALICIA FOX & TAMINA & JILLIAN HALL vs. NATALYA & GAIL KIM & EVE

Babyface Raw Divas were already assembled in the ring coming out of a break with Eve's music playing. A trio of heel Divas then came out for a six-Divas tag match. The Divas tagged in and out very frequently with bodies flying everywhere before the finish. Tamina then distracted Natalya to set up Alicia for the Axe Kick finisher for the win. Post-match: Alicia took the mic and cut a promo about beating all of the Divas on the roster no matter the match type. Suddenly, Melina made her TV return in street clothes. The crowd was hot for Melina's return as Alicia tried to run away, but the other Divas threw Alicia back in the ring. Melina then hit her big scream + leg drop finisher and stood tall in the ring.

WINNERS: Team Alicia in 3:00. Good use of the six-person format to give Alicia "victories" over the rest of the roster to serve the purpose of reintroducing Melina. A strong start to Melina's return helps them quickly move to a possible Divas Title match at Summerslam. (*)

Backstage: They showed WWE champion Sheamus (oh yeah, him) walking backstage with a scowl on his face. He's in action next.

[Commercial Break]

[Q4]

In-ring: WWE champion Sheamus came out for a non-title match. Goldust then came out and WWE re-visited their feud on the defunct ECW brand last year. Some very good TV came out of that program. Sidebare note: Michael Cole with an ECW reference on Superstars last Thursday and an ECW video tonight on Raw. They're obviously reminding the audience (and perhaps TNA) they "own" the ECW brand with TNA promoting their ECW-themed PPV this week. It's cheaper than having McDevitt draft a letter to TNA.

3 -- WWE champion SHEAMUS vs. GOLDUST -- non-title match

Sheamus blocked an early signature uppercut from Goldust before hitting the Irish Curse backbreaker. Sheamus then slowly backed up in the corner and pounded his chest before nailing the big bicycle kick to the head on Goldust. Sheamus then picked up Goldust and did the sign of the cross before nailing the "High Cross" running Outsider's Edge. Sheamus with the cover on Goldust for the win.

WINNER: Sheamus in 2:00. Very effective squash. They got over his three signature moves in fine fashion to set up Sheamus vs. Randy Orton at Summerslam. (n/a)

Post-match: Sheamus took the mic and said, "What a difference a year makes." Sheamus said he was fighting with Goldust in ECW a year ago; now he's just dominant. Sheamus said he's a two-time WWE champ standing on top of the world. He said he wasn't lucky enough to grab a briefcase like Miz or be a third generation star like Randy Orton. He said he got to this spot on his own. Sheamus said people are paying to see him. After waiting out boos, Sheamus name-dropped Triple H, claiming he ended his career. Sheamus vowed to do the same to Orton at Summerslam. He said the fans don't give him respect, but guess what, he doesn't their respect or credit. Sheamus said he already has all he needs...he held up the WWE Title belt to draw more heat. Sheamus smiled to the crowd with a confident heel smile to conclude the segment. Effective two-part booking of Sheamus here.

Backstage: They showed Cena and Jericho on a split-screen walking down the hallway in preparation for their match up next.

[Commercial Break]

In-ring: Chris Jericho came out first for the semi-main event of the night. Cole hyped there being "so much at stake" with the loser being off Team WWE at Summerslam.

[Q5 -- second hour] The second hour started promptly with John Cena hitting the ring to face Jericho. Cole reset the show as Cena bounced the ropes before tossing his hat into the crowd. WWE added a quick plug on the bottom of the screen that Cena will be a presenter at the Teen Choice Awards next week. Before the bell sounded, Cole and Lawler talked up Hart training for Summerslam while probably wondering what he got himself into.

4 -- CHRIS JERICHO vs. JOHN CENA -- Loser Leaves Team WWE

Jericho started in control of the match, executing a nice suplex before talking trash to Cena. Cole noted Jericho turning on Cena during the tag team main event last week as Cena airballed a flying shoulder tackle. Cena rolled to the outside and Jericho cockily raised his hand in the air with a smirk on his face. Jericho followed on the outside with stomps to the back before ramming him into the ring steps. The crowd tried to rally behind Cena as he sold on the outside with a ten count being applied. Cena snuck in before ten, then Jericho went back on the attack. Cena teased a comeback before eating an elbow in the corner. Jericho then slingshot Cena throat-first across the bottom rope and slapped on a reverse chinlock.

Cena broke free as Cole and Lawler discussed why the Team WWE stars thought they would function together in the first place despite their issues with Nexus. Cena then teased another comeback, but Jericho blocked the Five Knuckle Shuffle by springing to his feet and hitting the Codebreaker. Nice sequence. Cena rolled to the outside, so Jericho rolled him back in to make a cover, but Cena kicked out just before three. Cole then sent it to a commercial with Cena in jeopardy.

[Commercial Break. A spot aired for the Lucha Libre series on MTV2. Good 30-second spot.]

They returned from break with yet another teased comeback from Cena. Jericho escaped the Attitude Adjustment and dumped Cena to the floor where Cena was nearly counted out again. Jericho then cut off Cena with a kick to the head and Cena fell to the floor. Jericho followed out by ramming Cena's head into the announce table. "Stay down! You are a stupid man!" he shouted at Cena. Back in the ring, Jericho came off the top rope with a flying elbow smash that actually connected. He made a cover, but Cena kicked out again. Meanwhile, Cole and Lawler continued to talk about Cena's "heart and head not being in the match" to sell the match story of Jericho dominating.

Cena teased another comeback, but Jericho cut him off again and hit the Lionsault for a two count. Jericho complained to the ref, then took Cena to the top turnbuckle. Jericho teased a superplex, but Cena blocked and knocked Jericho to the mat. Cena then came off the top with the guillotine leg drop. Cena sold a knee injury, then made a quick cover for a two count. Cole and Lawler continued to stress the idea that Nexus is enjoying every moment of Team WWE's top stars beating each other up. Jericho then escaped the fifth teased comeback and applied the Walls of Jericho. SuperCena escaped, though, and slapped on the STF. Jericho instantly tapped out before Cena even had the hold locked in. Cena shot Jericho an odd look as Jericho just rolled to the outside and caught his breath.

WINNER: Cena in 14:00. Nice story to the match to cover for them not really moving out of second gear until the end. It was the right way to have a match "not move to a quicker pace" to actually tell a better story on it appearing Cena's head wasn't in the game. They didn't quite explain why Jericho quickly tapped out to lose the match, but we'll see what the follow-up is. (**1/4)

[Q6] Post-match: Cole suggested perhaps Jericho's heart wasn't in the match based on the quick tap-out. Jericho started to walk away, but Cena called to him from the ring. Cena said the people saw a great match between two of the best in WWE and he doesn't want him to leave the team. "I want you to stay because you are the best in the world at what you do," he said. Jericho sold he was thinking about Cena's words. Cena said he's not going to beg him, so the choice is his. Either they handle business with Nexus or Jericho lets everyone down, including himself, by walking away. Pause. Jericho let his eyes tell the story of contemplating the offer, then he frowned and turned away to leave. Jericho stopped on the ramp with his back to Cena, then continued to walk. "Jericho is out," Lawler quietly said as Cena rubbed his head. He's down to a five-team squad.

Still to come: Randy Orton vs. The Miz in the main event.

NBC plug: They plugged the one-hour WrestleMania 26 special on NBC this Saturday night. Big focus on Shawn Michaels vs. The Undertaker.

[Commercial Break]

Replay: Cole and Lawler narrated clips of the finish to Cena-Jericho, drawing attention to Jericho tapping and "quitting" Team Cena.

Backstage: Edge was in the locker room throwing tape at a monitor. Jericho then walked in and Edge told him he did the right thing. He said he respects what Jericho did out there. Jericho said he respects Edge quitting on the team because they were just fine before this Nexus thing started. Edge said together, they could own this place, which is why they keep making them butt heads. Edge said they should let bygones by bygones and own this place. They shook hands, then hugged it out. Suddenly, the MacBook buzzed. There was some continuity, as Jericho and Edge sneered when they heard the sound back in the arena.

In-ring: Cole announced to the crowd that Edge and Chris Jericho will team together against their former Summerslam teammates John Cena and Bret Hart next week. Cole also read that all seven members of Nexus will be ringside as lumberjacks. Jericho and Edge contemplated things back in the locker room.

Backstage: Josh Mathews brought in Randy Orton for a promo. Mathews brought up Sheamus's words earlier tonight vowing to take out Orton ala Triple H. Orton said Sheamus needs to do his homework because he's also taken Hunter out and he put him on a six-week vacation via a Punt to the skull. Orton invited Sheamus to come down to the ring tonight to watch his match against Miz. Orton said the good news for Sheamus is Miz won't be in any position to cash in his MITB contract. The bad news is he'll be primed to take the title from Sheamus at Summerslam. Another effective, to-the-point promo from Orton.

Up next: "World Premiere" of the trailer for John Cena's "Legendary" movie.

[Commercial Break]

[Q7]

Arena: They cut to a series of crowd shots as Lawler fed to the "Legendary" trailer. It's not exactly a "world premiere" when WWE released the trailer online a few weeks ago. A better title would have been "TV world premiere." Anyways. Good introduction of the story to the movie, which has been receiving buzz as one of WWE Studios's better movie releases.

In-ring: Back in the arena, Great Khali danced out with Singh as Cole suggested he's at a cross roads on which team to side with at Summerslam. Cole and Lawler recapped the storyline progression on Nexus offering Khali a spot in the group because they respect him. Ted DiBiase then came out with Maryse. The problem with the pairing is DiBiase isn't accepted by the fans as a top-line star yet and all eyes go to Maryse instead of DiBiase when they come to the ring. Cole said the rumor is DiBiase is upset he wasn't picked to be part of Team WWE by Cena.

5 -- GREAT KHALI vs. TED DIBIASE (w/Maryse)

Khali landed an early chop to the chest on DiBiase, who then took Khali out by the knees with a swift dropkick. DiBiase then slowly picked up Khali, for some reason, rather than keeping him on the ground, which allowed Khali to regain control. Maryse then hopped on the apron to distract the ref and Khali, which allowed DiBiase to go back to work on the knee.

Nexus then walked out in the form of Barrett and Skip Sheffield. They circled the ring as DiBiase kind of stammered across the ring like a cartoon heel. Khali then came back with a chop to the head before slapping on the Vice Grip to squish DiBiase's face like a grape. Maryse's look of cautious indifference told the entire story on DiBiase's character right now. Post-match: creative Raw editing. They randomly cut to a shot of Cole and Lawler talking on-camera while it appeared something else was going in the ring. They suggested Khali's loyalties are in question, which meant more of a stacked deck against Team Cena.

WINNER: Khali in 3:00. They kept it short, reinforced "dissension" in Team Cena, and involved Nexus in another segment. That was fine. Meanwhile, DiBiase seems to lose momentum by the week. It's either by design to break his character down before rebuilding him or they've lost confidence in him. (n/a)

[Commercial Break]

Next week: Cena and Hart vs. Jericho and Edge with the Nexus as lumberjacks.

[Q8]

Announcers: Cole and Lawler talked up "The Other Guys" starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Cole said the Bella Twins were hanging out with them earlier in the week. And resume the Bellas's role interacting with "celebrity guest hosts."

Video package: Ferrell and Wahlberg were shown talking about the movie. Ferrell noted he plays a nerdy cop, but women are attracted him. Wahlberg said it's the character, not actually him. With the "premise for comedy" in place, the Bellas interrupted and gravitated toward Ferrell as Wahlberg started to complain.

"You guys are very average looking women," Ferrell dryly said. He said if he were sitting next to them on a bus, he wouldn't notice him. Wahlberg begged for a date. He said when Wendi Richter was inducted into the Hall of Fame, he cried. All three looked at him weird. Bellas said they give good foot massages. Ferrell continued to "turn them down," then he walked away. Wahlberg tried the rebound pick-up, but they turned him down. Wahlberg said he likes Alicia Fox anyways. They shoved him back into his chair and he smiled. Actually, not a bad segment. It was a match-up of Ferrell's greatness, as exemplified by the great delivery of the "average-looking women" line, vs. WWE's typically horrible comedy writing for "guest hosts." And, this time, comedy won.

In-ring: The Miz walked out to the ring for the main event. Miz said Randy Orton made a big mistake last week when he ruined his MITB cash-in opportunity. Miz said Orton will pay for what he did. He said Orton's best-case scenario is that he beats Sheamus for the WWE Title, but what happens next? Miz said his moment comes next. "Can the voices in your head hear me, Orton?" Miz shouted. He said it's inevitable he will be WWE champion, so get used to it. Miz held up the MITB briefcase. "Because I'm The Miz...and I'm awesome!" he shouted, getting in his full catch phrase this time. Cole, as expected, talked up Miz. Randy Orton then came out with an icy glare for Miz.

6 -- RANDY ORTON vs. U.S. champion THE MIZ -- non-title match

Miz and Orton locked up early on, then Orton exploded out of the corner with a clothesline. Lawler talked about Miz being the "best thing in Cleveland" now that LeBron James has left. "That's sad!" Cole said. That was odd, as WWE promotes their stars as huge deals, so why would it be sad?, and Cole typically talks up Miz like he's the best thing to ever happen in WWE history. Weird comment from Cole, even if he was trying to knock Cleveland in the process. Orton continued to beat down Miz, including a slow set-up for a slingshot into the bottom rope. Orton eventually knocked Miz to the floor and Sheamus walked out on-stage. Cut to break with business about to pick up.

[Commercial Break]

Before returning to the match, they plugged the NBC special on Saturday. Back in the arena, Orton was still in control of the match pounding away on Miz. Miz finally got in some offense with a boot to the face that bought him some time. Miz then landed elbows to the shoulders before settling into a chinlock while trying to gouge Orton's eyes. Segue to a zoomed-in shot of Sheamus's eyes as he stood on-stage continuing to watch intently.

[Q9 -- over-run] Cole reset the show (making sure not to identify what city they were located in for a taped show) as Miz continued to work on Orton. Cole noted developments tonight with Edge and Jericho off Team Cena going into Summerslam. Miz then charged Orton with a hard clothesline in the corner. He maintained his pose for a moment to let the audience feel the move. Miz then slowly picked up Orton, who came back with right hand blows that rocked Miz before landing fired-up clotheslines. Miz attempted a left arm lariat, but Orton ducked and nailed a powerslam off the ropes. Miz reached the apron to slow down Orton, though, only to find himself in position for the spike DDT. Miz countered, though, by dumping Orton over the top rope to the floor. Cole excitedly called it a "great counter."

On the floor, Miz landed some offense, then rolled Orton back into the ring. Miz nailed his combination Reality Check and scored a close nearfall. At this point, the crowd was a mixture of fans exhausted in the fourth hour of a TV taping and fans standing to see the finish. Miz tried to follow up on his nearfall, but Orton suddenly hit the RKO to a strong reaction. Orton then made the cover for the win. Post-match: Immediately after the finish, Sheamus started to charge the ring, but Orton scared him off posing as a threat. Cole quickly wrapped things up as they abruptly signed off with Orton posed in the ring like a snake glaring at Sheamus.

WINNER: Orton in 13:00. Fine TV main event. Miz doesn't have a resume of stand-out matches, but this will likely go on his short list. They only needed him to look good in certain spots, e.g. the Reality Check combo that will stand out in viewers's minds, while the match was designed to get over Orton heading to Summerslam. Effective for - shock! - keeping both the champion and the challenger strong in the TV build-up. I believe that makes for a better PPV sales pitch. (**1/4)

FINAL THOUGHTS: The show definitely had the feel of a taped show with abrupt editing cuts rather than a "capturing what's happening live" type feel. Also, they were very focused on Summerslam and they delivered a safe show that won't be buzz-worthy, but it was effective for doing the job. WWE showed they weren't worried about maintaining strong TV ratings after strong performance in July and maintained a clear focus on their second-most-important PPV of the year. The TV ratings will likely drop compared to last week, but it won't be a bad thing because of the quality build-up to Summerslam. The show set the stage for an intriguing final sales pitch on next week's Raw.
