WWE Superstars TV Results
September 23, 2010 - Year 2, Week 24
Taped the Week of Sept. 20
Report by James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor

This week's episode of WWE Superstars on WGN opened with Smackdown announcers Todd Grisham and Matt Striker introducing the show and plugging a replay of the Raw TV main event with John Cena vs. Nexus later to come.

In-ring: JTG came out for the opening match from the Smackdown brand. A crawler came across the screen indicating the Superstars replay will be moving back to the midnight EST timeslot starting next week. Primo, from the Raw brand, came to the ring with A.J. from NXT to start the match.

1 -- JTG vs. PRIMO (w/A.J.)

A little chain wrestling to start and a clean break. JTG and Primo came to center ring and slapped hands to acknowledge each other. The action resumed as Grisham and Striker plugged the Hell in a Cell PPV in ten days, focusing on Cena vs. Barrett. The match moved to the outside where A.J. got caught in the middle and Primo took advantage, sending JTG flying into the ring steps. They cut to break.

[Commercial Break]

Back from break, Primo was in control of the match in the ring. Grisham and Striker brought up Cryme Tyme and Striker said he believes JTG has distanced himself from that. Striker added that he believes JTG has been as successful as he thought he would be as a singles wrestler. That's nice. JTG then made a comeback, but walked into a leg sweep from Primo. Primo missed with a diving head butt, though, and JTG pounded the mat to get the crowd behind him. JTG made a full comeback, then hit a shoulder block and followed with the Mug Shot. JTG wanted to end it, but Primo countered into a backstabber for the pin and the win. A.J. excitedly jumped up and down to celebrate the victory for Primo.

WINNER: Primo in 10:00. Fine singles match. WWE is investing more in Primo right now by virtue of him being on NXT, while WWE just doesn't have anything for JTG right now. (*1/2)

NXT recap: Musical chairs. They even slow-motion replayed the "controversial finish" on whether Naomi or A.J. won the chair contest. This was followed by a recap of the Talk the Talk challenge, complete with Photoshopped graphics of the topic with a picture of each Rookie Diva.

[Q2] Up next: a replay of the Cena vs. Nexus gauntlet match from Raw.

Chris Jericho DVD plug: They ran a video preview for Chris Jericho's "Breaking the Code" DVD due out on Tuesday. Plenty of classic in-ring and "personality" footage was shown, with focus on Jericho's 1999 Raw debut with The Rock.

[Commercial Break]

Announcers: Raw's Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler were shown on-camera to set up the Raw footage of Cena vs. Nexus to fill the middle portion of the show.

Raw replay: They went back to the real-time footage of Wade Barrett setting up Cena running the Nexus gauntlet. They cut to break before the gauntlet was completed.

Bragging Rights plug: Superstars of Raw vs. Superstars of Smackdown. Big Show was shown talking about the brand having power and strength. Cena said they have heart, soul, and "me." Plus, where does Nexus fit in? Wade Barrett had a brief cameo with the Nexus tagline.

[Commercial Break]

[Q3] Raw Replay: They returned to finish off the gauntlet and show real-time footage of the final verbal exchange setting up Cena vs. Barrett at Hell in a Cell.

Announcers: After the long real-time video replay, Cole and Lawler plugged Hell in a Cell with Orton vs. Sheamus for the WWE Title and Cena vs. Barrett - Nexus Disbands or Cena Joins Nexus.

In-ring: Goldust and Marlena...er...Aksana came to the ring for the TV main event. Goldust did his usual "unorthodox" ring intro before they cut to break.

[Commercial Break]

[Q4] In-ring: William Regal joined the Raw main event dressed in standard Regal gear rather than the Goldust get-up from Raw a few weeks ago. Regal had a look on his face on the way to the ring like he was trying to solve a game of Pictionary sizing up Goldust.

2 -- WILLIAM REGAL vs. GOLDUST (w/Aksana)

Basic tie-up to start things off. Cole plugged the Hell in a Cell PPV and noted the first HIAC match took place in 1997 between Taker and Michaels, which led to the introduction of Kane as Taker's half-brother. Lawler went back to when Goldust first debuted in WWE and said he thought he would be a flash in the pan. Lawler said he thought Goldust was "like a gimmick." Goldust took control early on, then Regal walked out of the ring and slowly walked toward Aksana, who kept backing away. Goldust cut off Regal, who then whipped Goldust into the ring steps to take control heading to break.

[Commercial Break]

Back from break, they zoomed in tight on Goldust's face as Regal was pounding him into the mat. Regal continued to focus on Goldust's left knee as Cole began a brief rant on NXT. Goldust teased a comeback at 10:00, then suddenly pulled out his Final Cut finisher for the pin and the win. Cole noted Regal dominated 90 percent of the match-up before Goldust caught Regal out of nowhere for the win. Goldust and Aksana celebrated in the ring and saluted the crowd to conclude the show.

WINNER: Goldust in 11:00. A workman's like performance from both men filling out the show and giving the announcers some time to hit talking points from Raw and NXT. NXT Pros go 2-0 on the show. (**)
