WEEKEND PREVIEW, NEWS & NOTES
Welcome back! It looks like another big weekend for indy wrestling.
Ring of Honor heads to a new territory tonight, in Manassas, Va., with Roderick Strong & Rocky Romero & Davey Richards vs. Takeshi Morishima & Go Shiozaki & Naomichi Marufuji, Bryan Danielson vs. Tyler Black, Austin Aries vs. Erick Stevens, Jimmy Jacobs vs. Jay Briscoe. That is one STACKED lineup for a debut show in a new region. I hope it draws well. ROH has another huge show on Saturday in Manhattan, and that lineup is posted below.
Jeff Jarrett will be signing autographs tonight at the Champions With Attitudes show in Columbia, S.C., at the Jamil Temple, with Raven in action on the show.
I will be attending the F1rst Wrestling show in downtown Minneapolis tonight. Obviously, with higher gas prices, I’ve really scaled back on the number of wrestling shows I attend live, but I rarely miss a F1rst show, as they have the best ROH-style action in the Twin Cities. Top matches tonight include Arya Daivari vs. Ryan Cruz and Cody O’Neill vs. Joey Envy. This is a big show for F1rst in that promoter Arik Cannon is relying entirely on local talent, without any “fly-ins.”
Combat Zone Wrestling returns to Philadelphia, Penn., on Saturday in the former ECW Arena for its annual “Best of the Best” tournament. While I am NOT generally a fan of CZW action – too much violence for my tastes – this tournament is usually one of the better CZW shows of the year. The roster for this year’s field includes Stupefied, Spyral BKNY, LuFisto, Sabian, Pinky Sanchez, Josh Prohibition, Chuck Taylor, Ricochet, Drew Gulak.
Jerry Lynn heads to Pro Wrestling Phoenix on Saturday in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Eugene Dinsmore headlines the National Wrestling Superstars show on Saturday in North Middletown, N.J.
”Dr. Death” Steve Williams will appear at the NWA Virginia event on Saturday in King & Queen, Va.
Jake “the Snake” Roberts will be in action Saturday for Main Event World League in Alliance, Ohio. Speaking of Roberts, he has been added to the International Wrestling Cartel show on Saturday, May 17 in Elizabeth, Penn.
In other news…
Balls Mahoney has returned to the indy scene, as he competed in an eight-man tag in Maryland Championship Wrestling. Results are below. Also on the show were “Cowboy” James Storm and Joey “Mercury” Matthews.
And you can always reach me with your indy results at chrisjvetter@hotmail.com. I request that you remember to say date, location (including building, city & state!), and full name of the promotion.
