The cause of death for AAA star El Hijo Del Perro Aguayo was a heart attack following severe trauma to his neck, according to the official doctor for the Tijuana Wrestling Commission. This was reported by the L.A. Times.

According to the AP, Aguayo, Jr. died "almost immediately" from the injury.

The Tijuana doctor, Ernest Franco, reported his findings that Aguayo, Jr. died as a result of "cervical stroke" due to a broken neck that led to the heart attack.

According to the deputy prosecutor for Baja California, Aguayo, Jr. suffered three fractured vertebrae and was dead by the time he reached the local hospital. Medics reportedly tried to revive him for 90 minutes, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead around 1:00 a.m. local time.

Video from Aguayo, Jr.'s final match on March 20 showed Rey Mysterio sending Aguayo, Jr. out of the ring with a head scissors. Aguayo, Jr. then returned to the ring, where Rey dropkicked him into the middle ropes as a standard set-up for the 619 move. It appeared that Aguayo, Jr. went throat-first into the middle rope, then went limp as he rested on the rope.

According to the Tijuana commission, it took 80 seconds for a doctor to arrive on the scene to tend to Aguayo, Jr. This coincided with Mysterio trying to lead the tag match to a finish once he appeared to realize that something was wrong with Aguayo, Jr.

The Crash promotion that ran the show said they had two ambulances, five paramedics, and a doctor at the show. It was reported last week that the doctor was late arriving on the scene because he was tending to another wrestler who was injured.

The Tijuana commission concluded that there was no negligence on the part of the promotion.

There is still the separate matter of government officials's investigation into the events. Individuals to be questioned include wrestlers involved in the match, the promoters, and medical personnel who handled Aguayo, Jr.'s body as he was transported from the ring to an ambulance to the hospital.
