NWA-TNA PPV #8
August 7, 2002
Nashville, Tenn. at the Fairgrounds Coliseum
Report by Phillip McConnell, PWTorch.com correspondent

Dark Matches

(1) Jimmy Rave (NWA Wildside Jr. Champion) beat Adam Jacobs. Good back and forth action with the crowd split between the two young performers. In the end, Rave got the win via pinfall.

(2) "Black Nature Boy" Scoot Andrews beat another independent wrestler. The second wrestler may have been Quiet Storm, I'm not sure. Didn't catch the name of the other wrestler in the match but the way the match went it doesn't matter. Andrews dominated from the start and won with amove I had never seen before. The move started out as a Pump HandleSlam but in mid move he turned it into a Rikishi Driver. Good performance by Andrews, who got the win via pinfall.

Live Pay-Per-View

(1) The Flying Elvises beat The Spanish Announce Team. This was a great opening match. The crowd was alive from the start and was into the match(and the entire show) all the way through. Crowd was in a odd three way split. Some fans(not a lot) were pulling for the SAT, some pulled for the Elvises, and some(mostly ladies) pulled only for Sonny Siaki. All the high spots got good to great reactions and the match was filled with plenty of "TNA" chants.

The Mike Tenay interview of Apolo did not go over well with the live crowd. It was very hard to understand a lot of what he had to say and the crowd also is just very anti-Apolo.

Apolo confronting Rick Steamboat also got almost zero reaction. Steamboats' first appearance on camera for the night did get a small pop. The Jerry Lynn/AJ Styles fight did get a decent reaction from the crowd. The Dupps talk with Steamboat got zero reaction as we couldn't hear what was being said between them.

(2) Ron "Truth" Killings beat Ken Shamrock to win the NWA Title. This was a really good match and once again the crowd was very into it. Truth is getting a bigger and bigger following each week as several "Truth" chants broke out. Crowd was shocked this match took place so early. Crowd seemed very happy to see Killings win the match to become champ. Great move by NWA and TNA to give Killings the NWA World Title. Only real problem with the match was all the guys that came out to ringside during the match and the missed superkick by Apolo.

Steamboat calling out Apolo was once again a no go with the fans until Jeff Jarrett came out. Jarrett is by far the most over guy in TNA and the crowd loves him. This interview went a long, long way in making Steamboat a heel in the eyes of the fans and he was getting a good number of boos and mean spirited comments sent his way the rest of the night after this segment.

TNA Girls as always were warmly welcomed by the (male) fans.

The Jive Talkin segment just went to long. It had some funny spots but could have been done a lot better if they had gone a shorter amount of time. Crowd was in and out of this segment.

The sit down interview with Monty Brown was good but crowd wasn't really into it until "Prime Time" Elix Skipper showed up and attacked Brown. Good segment that helped get Skipper over more as a heel.

(3) Malice (w/Jim Mitchell, Slash) beat Don Harris in a First Blood Match. The crowd was also into this match. They had to be or else they might have been caught in the middle of it. During the match a little old lady got nailed when action spilled over the security rail. She ended up being ok and the TNAworkers near ringside quickly moved in to check on her and did so during the remainder of the night. So word to the wise, if you sit close, watch out!

The showdown backstage between Taylor Vaughn and Bruce got a decent reaction from the crowd. The fight involving Styles and Low Ki got a very good reaction.

(4) Jeff Jarrett beat Apolo. This was a very good match with the crowd pulling for Jarrett all the way. Crowd was expecting Steamboat to screw over Jarrett and every time Steamboat acted the slightest bit biased the crowd lethim know it. Crowd was very happy to see Jarrett win but very mad to hear that instead of a title match against Killings that he was going to team withhim instead to go after the NWA World Tag Titles. Chants of "bullshit" and "you screwed Jeff" were going on after the small speech by Steamboat.

(5) Bruce beat Taylor Vaughn in an evening gown match. This match was thankfully kept short. It was good for the short amount of time it took up and gave the guys in the crowd a chance to see the real reason Vaughn is working for TNA. Yeah, like you really thought it was because of her great wrestling background.

The Don West TNA sales pitch for next weeks show got a decent reaction from the crowd. Many flocked over to get on camera.

(6) Low Ki beat A.J. Styles and Jerry Lynn in a three-way match to win the X Division Title. The crowd was more into this match than anything I have seen at any of the previous TNA shows in Nashville. Tons of "TNA" and "Low Ki" chants. Great back and forth action that had the crowd on the edge of their seats the whole time. Crowd was very happy to see Low Ki win the title and maybe just as much to see Styles lose it. One fan walking out said she didn't care who won as long as AJ didn't. After the main event we got showdowns between Styles and Lynn as well as Killings and Jarrett.

Notes: Overall, a great show. Place seemed packed and the crowd was more into this show than any other show I have been to in Nashville and that includes Raw, Smackdown, and other PPVs.

Jeff Jarrett is by far the most over face in the company and if thing keep going the way the have been Ron "Truth" Killings will be second to him pretty soon. Great, great night of live TNA action and the main event for next week looks very good with AJ Styles and Jerry Lynn defending the NWA World Tag Team Titles against Jeff Jarrett and NWA World Champion Ron Killings.

By the way the first fansite of NWA TNA is now up and running. A few friends of mine have started up www.totalnonstop.com. My live reports from the show can be found there, as well as my Saturday reviews, superstar bios and photos, interviews with the superstars of NWA TNA coming soon and much, much more to come. That's www.totalnonstop.com the unofficial website of NWA TNA. That's it for tonight. See you all Saturday with my NWA TNA Saturday Morning show report.
