[HOUR ONE]
-The show opened with a graphic acknowledging Benjamin “Pac” Satterly’s death. Excalibur introduced the show as they showed the entrance video walls all showing images of Pac. They went to ringside where Excalibur sat alone, voice cracking, saying Pac was a devoted son, a loving husband, and a dear friend. He said he was an incredible athlete and a relentless perfectionist, “your favorite wrestlers’s favorite wrestler.” He said he was also the most humble, warm, and supportive people you’d ever meet. He said he’d light up when talking about his passions including hedgehogs in his garden. He said he was a one of a kind and there will never be another like him. “We love you, we miss you,” he said.
-Tony Schiavone stood mid-ring in front of a wreath and a photo of Pac. He said they are all family, and when they got the news about Pac, they were grief stricken. He referred to him as “Ben” and said he was a wonderful human being. He said what they can learn is to be kind, nice, friendly – the things that he was. He said he left that impression on him and everybody in AEW.
He threw to a video package of Jon Moxley with Pac after All Out on Saturday night. He said this is the last time Pac was seen by their cameras.
-Mox said Ospreay was better than him. He said he gave him everything he had and gave him ever shot he had and he has no regrets. “Will Ospreay is indomitable,” he said. He said you are going to lose in life sometimes. “You’ve got to know how to lose,” he said. He said you’ll lose in wrestling, you’ll lose people, you’ll lose opportunities, you won’t always receive what you’ve earned or what you deserve. “What are you going to do?” he said. He said you have to smile and get up and do it again. He said every single day is a gift. He talked about the rush of stepping out in front of a crowd around the world. He was sitting against a retaining wall as he said all this.
A clip aired of Ospreay celebrating as he continued to talk. He said all Ospreay has earned is more hard work. He said there are different kinds of eulogies: this is what this guy did and this is who this guy was. He said he knows what eulogy he wants. He said he doesn’t think enough people see what they have and what this place can be, “what we’ve been gifted, what’s at stake, the future of professional wrestling, our craft, what we grew up dreaming of doing.” He said the future of pro wrestling will be what they make it. He stood up and the camera lingered on Pac, Marina Shafir, Wheeler Yuta, and Daniel Garcia. They followed Mox, with Pac being the last to follow.
-They returned to the ring where Schiavone asked everyone for silence as they had a ten bell salute to Ben Satterly. The stage was willed with AEW wrestlers including The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega front and center. Nick was sobbing as the bell rang. The photo collage on the video wall included Pac with The Butcher and another of Pac with his wife.
(Keller’s Analysis: That was so well done. So moving. Just a wonderful tribute. The promo from Moxley was amazing, and especially poignant given what happened the next day.)
(1) JON MOXLEY vs. ORANGE CASSIDY
The camera turned backstage where The Death Riders were assembled under red light. Mox walked out and splashed water from a plastic bottle over his face. Schiavone joined Excalibur at ringside. They discussed how difficult the night will be, but it’s their jobs. They shifted to talking about the battle between Ospreay and Moxley. Orange Cassidy then made his ring entrance. The bell rang 13 minutes into the hour. Cassidy leaned in the corner, took off his sunglasses, and looked to the sky. He was crying and then let out a deep breath and locked up with Mox. The crowd was quiet.
Mox applied a hammer lock and Cassidy half-heartedly reached for the ropes to force a break. He didn’t seem like he was in an emotional place to have a match. Schiavone said it’s been so tough for everyone backstage, and it’s tough to push through, but Pac would have. Excalibur’s voice cracked again as he tried to do his job. They noted that Cassidy might’ve been Pac’s top rival in AEW. Schiavone noted these two have the most wins of anyone else in AEW. They cut to a double-box break at 3:00 after Mox rammed Cassidy into the announce desk. [c/db]
Cassidy rallied and landed a dive through the ropes and then a crossbody in the ring followed by a tornado DDT for a two count at 8:00. Mox blocked an Orange Punch, but Cassidy tried again and landed it. Mox then gave Cassidy a cutter. Both were down and slow to get up.
They squared off mid-ring at 11:00. Mox gave Cassidy three slo-mo kicks. Cassidy put his hands in his pockets and dared Mox to come at him. Mox gave him two middle finger gestures. Cassidy landed a hands-in-pockets standing dropkick and then an Orange Punch. He then landed another. Mox crumpled to the mat. Cassidy landed a Slum Dog Millionaire, but Mox countered into a sleeper. Cassidy scored a two count with a crucifix. Cassidy yanked off his elbowpad. Mox caught Cassidy with a Pac-style lariat for a two count. Mox then applied a Brutalizer. Cassidy reversed Mox to the mat for a two count. Cassidy then went for a Brutalizer. Mox resisted, escaped, and landed a stomp. Mox then gave Cassidy a Death Rider for the win.
WINNER: Mox in 14:00.
-After the match, Mox leaned in the corner and then collapsed, seemingly out of a mix of physical and emotional exhaustion. Bryan Danielson’s music then played. He walked out, also crying and wearing the Pac tribute t-shirt everyone wore on stage at the start of the show. He entered the ring and looked at Moxley and waited for Moxley to stand. Mox stood and leaned on the top rope and broke down emotionally. Fans chanted, “Holy shit!” He then turned and hugged Danielson. Fans applauded. They embraced for an extended period as they went to a wide shot. Cassidy was seen walking to the back. Moxley’s music then took over. [c]
-Taped earlier in the day, “Hangman” Adam Page was sitting backstage talking about Pac, crying. He said he met Pac his first day on the job. He said he was the kindest, most welcoming and humble man he ever met. He said he loved working with him. He said in the past few months, he had gotten the closest with him and he got to tell him how much he looked up to him and admired him. He said he wished he could convey how much he loved wrestling and the people he worked with in pro wrestling. He said he cared about everybody so much and he’s going to miss him. He looked at the camera and said, “Thank you, Ben, and good bye.” He began sobbing and put his head in his hands.
(2) KEVIN KNIGHT & KYLE FLETCHER & RPG VICE (Trent Beretta & Rocky Romero) vs. THE YOUNG BUCKS & KENNY OMEGA & “HANGMAN” ADAM PAGE
The bell rang 43 minutes into the hour. The babyface foursome cleared the ring at 3:00 and then kneeled, then hit running dives into perfectly positioned pairs of heels on opposite sides of the ring who were waiting for them at ringside. A minute later, Knight launched himself off the top rope onto Omega and Hangman who were waiting for him at ringside. Back in the ring, Trent had Nick covered. Matt hit Trent and the ref stopped his count. They cut to a double-box break at 6:00 as chaos continued. [c]
Hangman landed a running shooting star press on Knight. He then tagged in an eager Omega who gave Knight a Snap Dragon suplex. Omega charged at Fletcher, but Fletcher turned it into a Michinoku Driver for a near fall. Trent and Rocky rallied. Matt intervened. Knight dove at Omega, but Omega gave him a V-Trigger. The Bucks then landed superkicks. The faces all hit big moves at once and Omega scored a near fall on Trent. Omega finally landed a One-Winged Angel on Trent for the win.
Omega, Hangman, and The Bucks embraced mid-ring. Matt seemed to be giving them a pep talk to push through.
WINNERS: Omega & Hangman & The Bucks.
-Another segment taped earlier in the day with Cash Wheeler. He was crying and said he is going to miss the smile and the type of person he was. “One of the best people I’ve ever encountered,” he said. “We’re going to miss you so much, Ben. … I love you, Ben.”
-Jay White said Pac never realized how much everyone thought of him. He said he watched him over and over and tried to emulate him. He said if anybody was ever in a league of their own, it was him. He said he was the perfect wrestler and a complete professional. He said they all feel like Pac was about to show up to the Pac Appreciation Night. He said they’ll miss him and they love him.
-Renee Paquette stood at ringside and thanked everyone for sharing in this celebration. She read a statement from Ben’s wife Natalie, his mom, and his dad. It said they were completely devastated, but the love and respect they received from across the globe have helped them get through these tough days. The statement noted that Ben is his parents’ only child. It detailed Ben meeting Tony Khan and how great the AEW chapter of his life and career was. “Tony Khan is a great man and the business is so lucky to have someone like him,” it said. The statement continued to express appreciation for all the stories they’ve heard from those close to Ben. Fans applauded.
-Swerve Strickland, Prince Nana, and The New Level walked out somberly to Swerve’s entrance theme. They stood in the ring and saluted Pac. [c]
-Another pre-taped tribute statement aired, this time with Ricochet. He said everyone thinks they have more time, but you have to embrace and enjoy every moment of life. He said he and Pac used to basically live together in Dragon Gate Japan. He said they had a bunk bed and just enough room for their bags. He said they’d spent nights and days there and he always looked up to him and who he was and how he went about life. He said he was an inspiration. “He was my big brother,” he said. “This is what it feels like, like I lost my brother. It’s always the good people, the people have great stories about.” He said there aren’t that many people in the industry anyone can get together and say nice things about. With Pac, everything is about a light-hearted memory or how he inspired them. He closed with, “I love you, Ben, and I know all of us are going to miss you so bad. I love you, Ben.”
(3) WILL OSPREAY vs. RICOCHET (w/Toa Leona, Bishop Kaun)
Ospreay and Ricochet kneeled mid-ring and embraced. Andrade, “Speedball” Mike Bailey, and United Empire members stood at ringside. The bell rang 15 minutes into the hour. Ospreay got bleeped for whatever he yelled when the bell rang. Excalibur said tonight’s main event will feature The Death Riders vs. The Don Callis Family. At 4:00, Ricochet landed a leaping twisting dive onto Ospreay at ringside. They cut to a double-box break. [c/db]
Back from the break, Ospreay overhead-suplexed a charging Ricochet into the ringside barricade. Ospreay landed a Blue Thunder Bomb at 13:00 for a near fall. A few minutes later, Ospreay landed the Blue Arrow for the win. Ospreay broke down afterward and was just overcome with emotion and pounded the mat. Andrade entered the ring and helped him up. Ricochet and Ospreay hugged again as Ospreay’s music played and the wrestlers from ringside gathered around them.
WINNER: Ospreay in 17:00.
-A pretaped segment aired with Ospreay sitting backstage talking about Pac’s backyard wrestling days. He said watching those matches as a young teenager meant so much to him when he envisioned taking the same road Pac did. He said his style would influence so many people. He said early in his career he chased a match with Pac and it’s what he wanted more than anything. He said he was the loveliest person and he’ll miss talking with him and learning from him. He thanked him for everything he has done for him and so many others. [c]
(4) THUNDER ROSA & HYAN & MARINA SHAFIR vs. BRITT BAKER & PERSEPHONE & MERCEDES MONE
When Shafir made her entrance after everyone else, Moxley accompanied her. They walked past a folding chair representing Pac’s chair. Excalibur said TK expanded the match to include Shafir from The Death Riders and also Mercedes due to her friendship with Pac established back during their time in WWE. The bell rang 43 minutes into the hour. They cut to a double-box break at 3:00. [c/db]
Shafir put Meredes in Mother’s Milk, but Persephone broke it up. Chaos followed with all six. Baker applied Lock Jaw on Shafir. Shafir stood and took Baker down and applied a Brutalizer to get the tapout win. Baker sold afterward like she would need dental work, covering her mouth in pain.
WINNER: Shafir & Hyan & Rosa in 11:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: It was nice to see Shafir get the win there. Certainly Baker has historically been a bigger star in AEW, but Shafir was a member of the Death Rider with Pac and it was cool to give her that moment.) [c]
-A pre-taped segment aired with “Swerve” Strickland. He said he met Pac at a Dragon Gate show and he always marveled at the man. He said he was impressed by his meticulous perfectionism and his movements were so intent. (So well put.) He said then he got to know Ben. He said he was quiet in a room, but when he’d speak, everyone listened since it must be important. He said it was always what you needed to hear that day to get motivated. He said he misses him. He said he was loved and cared for so dearly by everyone he worked with.
-Darby Allin then spoke about how dedicated Pac was to his craft. He said for Ben, he wasn’t in pro wrestling for fame or money, but rather for the love of pro wrestling. He said when he heard the news he died, he started watching old clips of him. Darby began to cry and then he shared some moments he had with him in the ring. He said Pac was good sport about playing in the sand and coming up with fun spots in their golf course match. He thanked him for all the crazy moments they got to share in the ring. He said hoped in their next lives, maybe they can find another golf course to play on. “Until then, I love you,” he said.
[HOUR THREE]
(5) MARK DAVIS & JAKE DOYLE & LANCE ARCHER & JOSH ALEXANDER & WARDLOW (w/Don Callis) vs. BRYAN DANIELSON & CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI & WHEELER YUTA & DANIEL GARCIA & GABE KIDD
When The Death Riders came out at first, there were only four of them accompanied by Shafir. They walked to the ring through the crowd. Moxley joined in on commentary. Excalibur acted surprised that Mox wasn’t joining his partners in the ring. Schiavone said it’s five-on-four in the ring. Mox said, “Oh, are you asking me? Maybe everything will work out perfectly. Just roll with the punches.” Then Danielson’s music played and he came out of retirement for this match. Fans chanted “Yes! Yes!”
Late in the match, Shafir battled Archer on the ring apron. Claudio leaped onto Archer at ringside. A minute later Danielson and Yuta dove through the ropes at two opponents at ringside. Kidd and Garcia then went hard after Doyle. Garcia locked on a sharpshooter and then Claudio landed a stomp for the win.
WINNERS: Danielson & Claudio & Yuta & Garcia & Kidd in 20:00.
-A video feature aired on Ben Satterly with photos of him as a kid and teenager and then early matches including against various current AEW wrestlers such as Danielson and Omega. The song playing was “They Know How Speak: by Manchester Orchestra. At one point Pac said, “Don’t you dare forget about the Bastard!” They even found some grainy footage of him wrestling Brodie Lee and then sharing time with Andy “The Butcher” Williams. It closed with a clip of him sitting and looking at the camera saying, “Til we meet again.” He blew kisses at the camera.
-They cut back to the arena as fans applauded. Wrestlers surrounded an empty chair with a spotlight on it. Fans chanted, “Thank you, Pac!”
FINAL THOUGHTS: That was magnificent. May we all be loved and cherished and respected by our friends and peers like Ben was.
