-Highlights from last week’s Succession IV were shown to open the show.
(1) CHAZZ “STARBOY” HALL & CAPPUCCINO JONES vs. THE MOG SQUAD (Santi Rivera & Jacari Ball)
Jones and Ball opened the match with some chain wrestling before Hall took the tag and utilized his highly unique brand of offense to befuddle Ball. Rivera took the tag and did a little mogging (whatever that is) before the face duo sent them mogging to the outside. They regrouped, re-entered the ring, and used nefarious means to take control of the match before they cut to a brief commercial break. [c]
Back to the match, The Mog Squad kept Hall isolated in their corner. Rivera took Starboy down with a neckbreaker variation before distracting the referee while Ball thumped on Hall from the ring apron. Ball executed a Three Amigos gut-wrench suplex series on Hall , who fought back and dived for the tag, but was caught. Starboy finally made the hot tag to Jones, who lit the ring on fire as he took down his opponents. After a near fall on Rivera, Jones missed a Froggy Brew splash. Hall broke up a very near fall, then hit an incredible double pele kick. He dropped the denim straps before the face duo landed a series of high dives before executing a simultaneous Froggy Brew and shooting star press for a double pin.
WINNERS: Chazz “Starboy” Hall & Cappuccino Jones at 12:40.
(Miller’s Take: This went a little long for an Evolve match, but it was a solid bout. Both teams had equal chances to shine, and the psychology was good. Jones seems to have lost his way a bit since the quiet demise of his Adrenaline Drip team with Jack Cartwheel, but he may have found his path back with this team.)
-As if she read my mind, Adriana Rizzo caught the winners at ringside and asked if this was the beginning of a new team. Jones said he sees a dark roast and a denim dragon, then asked the fans if they could dig StarBrew. I’m digging it.
-Aaron Rourke cut a good, intense promo on Kale Dixon. [c]
-A pretaped promo from Elijah Holyfield saw him warn Braxton Cole and Marcus Mathers that he was going to take them both out in a triple threat match.
(2) SKYLAR RAYE vs. SLOANE JACOBS
Jacobs took her smaller opponent down to the mat a couple of times before Raye cinched in a headlock to ground Big Kat Kita’s BFF. They both evaded offensive moves with cartwheels before Raye executed a slingblade for a near fall. She went to the ropes, but Jacobs yanked her down hard to the mat for a two-count. She wrapped up Raye in the ropes and choked her with her leg before pulling both arms far behind her back.
Raye tried to mount some offense, but Jacobs stayed on her. She showed a little frustration at her inability to put her foe away., but continued with some methodical offense. Raye reversed an offensive maneuver from Jacobs into a Starfall DDT for the quick win.
WINNER: Skylar Raye at 4:51.
(Miller’s Take: This was short and sweet. Raye continues her upward climb while Jacobs continues to be bogged down as the Tiffany Stratton to Nikkita’s Nia Jax. Raye is on the diminutive side, but very talented. Jacobs has potential, but need to break away from her sidekick role.)
-After the match, Raye climbed the turnbuckle and shouted, “Nikkita, I want you, not your puppet!” [c]
-Footage was shown of Monica Monroe (seems to be a popular last name, lately) ending Laynie Luck’s reign as WWE ID Champion at a recent Reality of Wrestling event.
-In the back, Alix Brooks and Kale DIxon cut a promo on Aaron Rourke prior to making their ring entrance for the main event.
(3) KALE DIXON (w/Alix Brooks) vs. AARON ROURKE
Dixon attempted to ambush Rourke before the bell, but Rourke was prepared, and delivered a release German suplex before the referee called for the bell. After a brief back and forth, Rourke clotheslined Dixon over the top rope, then repeated the move twice more when Dixon tried to get back into the ring. He threw a little shade at Brooks before slipping back into the ring to continue the onslaught. Dixon finally found a break (with the assistance of Brooks) and took control of the match before they cut to a very brief break. [c]
When they returned, Dixon was still on top of Rourke, not allowing him any space to breathe. Rourke managed to roll Dixon into a half-crab, but Dixon quickly recovered to maintain control. He dropped Rourke with a belly-to-back suplex, then smiled at his accomplishment. Rourke sat up, Undertaker-style, with a scowl on his face that nearly made Dixon wet himself. He went to the top, but Rourke performed a handstand headscissors to flip him to the mat.
The two combatants stood and traded jabs, kicks, clotheslines, and elbows, with the former Evolve champ getting the better of the exchange. He landed a big codebreaker off the ropes for a near fall, blew a kiss to Brooks, then went back to clobbering Dixon. Rourke hit a huge sit-out powerbomb for a very near fall that shocked the fans and Rourke. He went to the top and got shoved off by Brooks while the referee was distracted. Rourke came crashing down throat-first over the top rope, then ate a huge discus forearm that led to the three-count.
WINNER: Kale Dixon at 11:38.
(Miller’s Take: This was an excellent main event. Rourke has improved by leaps and bounds since he won the Evolve title, and has continued to excel after losing it to Harlem Lewis. He has all the talent and charisma to go far in WWE, and I believe he’s ready for a big NXT run. Dixon has found himself in Evolve after being relegated to comic relief in NXT as a part of Chase U, and could see him contending for title gold on the purple brand.)
-After the match, Blake Howard took a phone call from Harlem Lewis, who warned Harley Riggins that he would be back, and he has no intentions of giving up the Evolve title until he’s called up to NXT.
FINAL THOUGHTS: No word from Women’s champ Nikkita Lyons this week, but I’m sure we’ll see her next week, as she was called out by Skylar Raye. Nothing really newsworthy on this post-Succession show, but it had some really good in-ring action, and I’m looking forward to the return of Harlem Lewis. See you next week!
