[HOUR ONE]
-They showed the exterior of The Scope arena in Norfolk, Va., one the last remaining major arenas that hosted big 1980s and 1990s pro wrestling events. Michael Cole introduced the show and said it was the first time Raw has been there in over three years. They showed the arrivals of Stephanie Vaquer, Becky Lynch, and The Judgement Day (Dominik Mysterio, Liv Morgan, Roxanne Perez, and Raquel Rodriguez).
-They aired a video package on last week’s exchange with Roman Reigns and LA Knight, then clips of Jacob Fatu beating Royce Keys in a street fight, followed by Fatu attacking Keys.
-They went to Cole and Graves at ringside. Cole updated Keys’s injuries, saying he would be out of action indefinitely with a bruised laryxn and cervical strain.
-Solo Sikoa interrupted Cole and Graves from the crowd, mocking Jey Uso’s entrance. At first fans booed and jeered. He asked, “Am I in the right place?” he asked. Some fans cheered and laughed. He said after what The Bloodline did to his friend Keys, he came to Raw to discuss some family business. “So Bloodline,” he said, at which point Jey came out to his music. Fans delighted in the communal experience moving their arms to his music.
Jey entered the ring and glared at Solo. Solo danced to Jey’s music in a mocking way. Fans called for them to play the music again. Jey asked, “Do you really want to do this, little brother?” he said. “You want to air out our family business again?” Jey said the Tribal Chief called the play “and I need you to fall in line, Solo.”
Solo asked, “Why do people keeps saying that crap, fall in line?” He asked how it worked out for Jey. “Did you fall in line because it looks like you fell off.” Solo said Jey was a World Champion, he won the Royal Rumble, and he beat Gunther at WrestleMania. He said all the kids were happy when they heard his music. “Now all that crap is out the window,” he said while cackling. “All that crap is out the window now. It sucks to be you now.”
Solo added that he’s told him before that he’s not coming back to the family and he loves where he’s at. He said everybody loves where Solo’s at. Some fans cheered and chanted “Solo!” Jey told Solo to shut his “cocky, spoiled, disrespectful ass up.” He said he raised Solo and changed his diapers. He said he’s there because of them. He said Solo’s family is set for life because of them including a nice house. He said they should handle this in the ring tonight. He said when he wins, Solo must fall in line and he’ll deliver him first-class to the Tribal Chief.
Solo mocked Jey saying it was “a warning shot” and interacted with the crowd to laughter and then told Jey to calm down. “Okay, I accept,” he said. Solo added that when he beats him, Jey and his “messed up family” can leave him alone.
(Keller’s Analysis: Fans again seemed not sure how to respond since they like Jey and his entrance, but Solo was entertaining and had good lines.)
-They went to Cole and Graves at ringside. Graves said Solo was all fun and games there, but he has to be serious later tonight. Cole then hyped the first round of no. 1 contender’s tournament to earn a shot against Reigns on Raw in Mexico City on Sept. 14 starting with Penta vs. Laredo Kid.
-A video package aired with soundbites from Penta and Laredo Kid.
-Penta made his entrance. [c]
-They showed Jey walking backstage where Jey crossed paths with Fatu and Jimmy Uso. Jey said he’s trying to handle the Solo problem. Fatu said it looks like he’s trying to run his play by himself “and it sounds like you’re ignoring us and the OTC.” Jey said he’s going to do something later “that your ass couldn’t do,” which is bring Solo back to the family. Fatu said he did his thing last week, so Jey has to get his dub this week.
-Graves hyped the Solo vs. Jey match with the stip.
(1) PENTA vs. LAREDO KID – No. 1 Contender Tournament Round One
Cole said Reigns agreed to Rey Mysterio’s idea for him to defend against the best luchador from either Raw, Smackdown, or AAA. Graves said Laredo Kid was the cruiserweight kingpin in AAA and has years more experience than Penta. Cole noted Laredo’s match against Trick Williams on the Saturday Night’s Main Event pre-show at MSG last month. Graves noted that there’s been a chance of attitude in Laredo Kid in recent months, becoming more aggressive and he said it has served him well. Cole said they’re familiar with each other. Graves said it’s only the third singles match between these two although they’ve shared the ring over 25 times. Laredo landed a moonsault onto Penta at ringside. He scored a two count back in the ring before they cut to a break. [c]
Penta avoided a top rope move by Laredo and quickly landed a Mexican Destroyer to win.
WINNER: Penta in 11:00 to advance to the semi-finals to face the winner of Psycho Kid vs. La Parka.
(Keller’s Analysis: Good action. The announcers had to do a lot of heavy lifting to try to give a backstory and context to the match outside of the tournament setting since fans aren’t super-invested in Laredo Kid. If WWE protected outcomes of title matches more in the larger narrative, this would feel like a bigger deal.)
-Cole talked about the European tour WWE announced for next January including Raw and Smackdown TV events.
-Byron Saxton interviewed The Vision’s Austin Theory, Maxxine Dupri, Logan Paul, and Bron Breakker. Logan said the Alpha Academy are beneath them and losers. Maxxine said Akira Tozawa has no chance against Austin Theory. SHe said Theroy is the most jacked and talented wrestler in WWE. Theory and Maxxine had their hands all over each other. They left with Logan. Breakker was standing there frozen and looking stern. Saxton asked how he was doing. Breakker asked Saxton what he thinks of Oba Femi. Saxton said he likes him. Breakker asked if he’s the next big thing. Saxton said that’s what Brock Lesnar said. Breakker told Saxton he’s sounding like Paul Heyman now.
-Theory made his ring entrance with Maxxine and Logan. [c]
-A clip aired of Breakker beating JOe Hendry last week and then Tozawa trying to stop a post-match attack. Cole applauded Tozawa’s bravery and said he has a ton of guts.
(2) AUSTN THEORY (w/Maxxine Dupri) vs. AKIRA TOZAWA
The bell rang 39 minutes into the hour. Cole said Breakker appeared to still be preoccupied with thoughts on Oba while standing frozen at ringside. Cole said Maxxine “has done a complete 360” from who she was before. Graves said, “You mean 180?” Cole said, yes, and he thanked him for correcting him with a sense of resignation and annoyance. Graves chuckled and said, “Just saving you from Twitter.” Cole said they’ll still go after him. (I knew there was no way Graves could resist pointing that out.) [c]
After the break, Theory won with his Off Switch forearm finisher.
WINNER: Theory in 9:00.
-Afterward, Maxxine encouraged Theory to continue the attack on Tozawa. Pearce ran out with other officials and yanked a chair out of Theory’s hands. Breakker entered the ring and was about to spear Tozawa when Oba’s music played. Breakker stopped in his tracks. Oba stepped out as fans chanted his name to his theme.
Oba entered the ring. Pearce stepped between them. Cole said these two are cornerstones of WWE’s future and Pearce understands that. “The problem is, at some point this is going to pop off because these two men are going to want to prove they’re the alpha male.” Graves said that’ll be a win for the fans.
-Cathy Kelley interviewed Rey Mysterio and asked what stood out to him about the Penta vs. Laredo Kid match. He said it was a banger and when Raw returns to Mexico, Roman will have his hands full. Dragon Lee walked in and thanked him for the opportunity. Dom walked in and complained that Rey didn’t place him in the tournament. Rey said he didn’t want to give him a handout as that’s how he became a jackass in the first place. Dragon said he was going to go to Adam Pearce and get him to book them in a match. Dom said he’ll show he is the greatest Mysterio of all time.
-They showed Stephanie Vaquer heading to the ring. [c]
-A clip aired of Liv, Raquel, and Perez attacking Vaquer the day after WrestleMania on Raw. Cole said until last week, they hadn’t seen Vaquer since then. Then a clip aired of Becky Lynch returning followed by Vaquer, both going after The Judgment Day. They showed the staredown between Becky and Vaquer. Cole called it “tension” between them. Graves said there’s only room for one at the top.
-Vaquer made her entrance.
