[HOUR ONE]

-They opened with an aerial view of Downtown Boston as Joe Tessitore introduced the show. He said they were about to begin the Last Time Is Now Tournament. They showed Shinsuke Nakamura walking backstage, then Damien Priest, the Kabuki Warriors, and Stephanie Vaquer & Nikki Bella. Tesitore said they’d address the Logan Paul-C.M. Punk incident last week. Then they showed a sign on a road that said “Entering West Newbury” with a scene of the town Cena was raised in. A loud “Cena!” chant broke out.

They cut to the crowd in the arena as Tessitore touted the sellout. Triple H stood mid-ring and his music faded. Levesque said they all live in a magical time and a time when everyone has an opinion, especially when it comes to this business, and few agree on much. He said that includes opinions on who the greatest of all time is. He said you can measure it a lot of ways. He listed these criteria:

  • In-ring performance
  • Charisma
  • The ability to tear someone up on the microphone
  • The ability to do p.r.
  • The ability to be a box office attraction

“The categories are endless, but the truth is they are all subjective,” he said. He said he can see it from a lot of sides – as a fan, a talent, a performer, a businessman, as a promoter. I can see all sides of what it takes to be considered great in this.” He said tonight might be one of those nights where everyone in the arena can agree on one thing. He said he can look it “as maybe the most objective person there is” (huh?), he comes up with one name. He said this (mystery) person gave it his all and wanted to see it elevated to the biggest form of entertainment on the planet possible. He said this person “when I look at it objectively” is the single greatest asset this business has ever seen. He said he is “without a doubt, the greatest of all time.” He then said it was his honor to bring him out for all of them. He introduced (I can’t wait – who is this person?!)… John Cena.

(Keller’s Analysis: Shouldn’t they include something like “winning matches” and “winning titles” as the primary criteria of who is the greatest ever? In the course of an actual pro wrestling TV show, it’s truly okay to pretend pro wrestling matches are real and that winning is what everyone is primarily aiming for. Levesque isn’t alone in fearing backlash if he actually talks about the storyline criteria of being someone who won matches and won titles. When he laments everyone having an opinion, it gives an impression that he takes offense to criticism of his decisions and actions rather than just being secure in his decisions and not letting criticism of them get to him.)

Cena came out and said what happens in WWE is a team effort and the fans are part of it. He said his goal is to leave the business better than he found it and do his best to pay back all the opportunities to showcase himself in front of WWE audiences. He thanked fans for putting up with him over the years. He said now WWE Superstars will have to earn the spot as his final opponent. He said he is putting up a fight so they can’t brag about beating him. He said Dec. 13 will be a night to close a chapter, but it’ll be a night of opportunity. He said it will be a night where “main WWE roster Superstars” hold exhibitions for the brightest of what NXT has to offer the business.” He said SNME is about closing a chapter, but paving the road ahead.

He said he selfishly wanted go to Boston one last time. His voice cracked a bit. He talked about looking up at the banners and feeling the greatness in the arena and seeing fans filled with joy. Dominik Mysterio interrupted. He walked up to Levesque in the ring and spoke in Spanish. He said he heard them talking about the future. Fans chanted, “Shut the f— up!” He talked himself up and asked “Hunter” what he was going to do about what happened last week. He said he is the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time, and his celebration was interrupted “by some dead beat.” He said, “I interrupt old man celebrations.” He said whatever was going on there wasn’t as important as him.

Cena cut in and said he wanted to start again. He welcomed Dom to Boston. Dom said it’s not about him or Boston. He told Cena to go sit in the corner and “speak when you’re spoken to or I’ll put you down.” Cena smiled and nodded. Fans chanted, “You f—ed up!” Cena said, “Fine speech.” He said in his anger, he forgot who he was talking to and where he is. He said any other night in any other city, he’d give him a chance, but tonight he doesn’t have a chance. “Tonight I am invincible!” he said. He told Dom to choose his words carefully. He said if he picks a fight with him tonight, he will lose. “Wrong time, wrong place, wrong guy,” Cena said. He said he’d do him a favor out of the respect he has for his father. “Right now, I’m going to let you turn around and walk your ass back through that curtain,” Cena said.

Dom smiled and laughed. He said he’ll need more than magic to touch him. He said he hasn’t reached his peak yet, but he’s better than Cena’s ever been in his prime. He said in any era, he would have whooped his ass. Fans chanted, “You f—ed up!”

Levesque said he agrees with the fans. He said Dom said anytime, any place, any era. He said it seems like a pretty good era, a good place, and one hell of a time. He said if it’s okay with Cena, Dom will defend his IC Title tonight. Dom got but-eyed. Fans cheered. “Get me a referee!” Levesque said. “And let’s get to work.” Cena called for the ref. Tessitore excitedly said, “This is happening!”

(Keller’s Analysis: I’ve been pushing for this match to happen, but worried it wouldn’t get wedged into Cena’s match schedule with the plans they had. This is tremendous that they’re making sure it happens. It’s good for Dom to have this moment, and Dom is a great heel foe for Cena in his hometown. This also removes concern Cena might have about fans siding with Dom over him since this is in Boston.) [c]

(1) DOMINIK MYSTERIO vs. JOHN CENA – Intercontinental Title match

The bell rang about 25 minutes into the hour. Tessitore noted Dom jump-started the match during the formal ring introductions. Dom had Cena down in the corner as they returned from the break with the match in progress. Wade Barrett said he was flabbergasted this match was happening. Tessitore said this is Cena’s last chance to become a Grand Slam Champion.

Dom rolled to ringside when Cena made a comeback. He walked down the aisle. Cena chased him down and threw him to ringside. Dom reverse-whipped Cena into the ringside steps. Dom stood on the steps and flexed his arms. Fans booed and then chanted, “Let’s go Cena!” Dom took it to Cena in the ring. Cena teased an Attitude Adjustment, but Dom slipped free and landed a DDT for a two count. They cut to a break at roughly 5:00. [c]

Cena lifted his knees on a Dom splash and then went into his finishing sequence. He landed his Five Knuckle Shuffle and then lifted Dom for an Attitude Adjustment. Dom blocked it and sent Cena shoulder-first into the ringpost. Dom removed a top turnbuckle pad and then grabbed a chair from ringside as the ref placed the pad back. Dom pretended Cena hit him and made a noise with the chair, but when he tossed Cena the chair, Cena dropped down too. “Talk about brilliant!” said Tessitore. Cena smiled at Dom. The ref took the chair from Dom. Cena then lifted Dom for an Attitude Adjustment again. The ref got knocked down.

Cena applied an STF and Dom tapped. Cena celebrated despite the ref being down and the bell not ringing. Fans chanted, “Ref, you suck!” (Kinda harsh given the circumstances.) Dom brought his IC belt into the ring and swung at Cena. Cena ducked and gave Dom an Attitude Adjustment. He threw the belt out of the ring. A replacement ref ran out and counted, but Dom kicked out before three at 13:00.

Dom then gave Cena a 619 and a top rope frog splash. Cena rolled through and gave Dom an Attitude Adjustment to win the IC Title. “The empty spot on the mantle is filled,” announced Tessitore.

WINNER: Cena in 14:00 to capture the Intercontinental Title. [c]

-They cut backstage to Cena being greeted by wrestlers who were cheering and smiling. Rey told Cena that he really needed that ass kicking. Cena said, “He’s a good kid, I hope it was a good lesson.” Cody Rhodes walked up to Cena and congratulated him. Cena called Cody a class act. They shook hands.

-They went to Tessitore and Barrett. Tessitore said he just added to the lore of Boston Garden. He said Cena should have a banner hanging. Barrett said Rey posted on TwitterX, “LOL.”

-A clip aired of C.M. Punk’s victory speech last week and the subsequent happenings with Logan Paul.

-They showed Logan Paul’s arrival earlier.

-Damien Priest’s ring entrance aired. [c]

(2) DAMIEN PRIEST vs. RUSEV – Last Time is Now Tournament qualifier

The bell rang 57 minutes into the hour. Rusev targeted Priest’s burned eye. Rusev landed a jump spin wheel kick and several roundkicks to the chest. They cut to a break at 2:00. [c]

[HOUR TWO]

Back from the break, Priest made a comeback. Priest walked on the top rope and leaped onto Rusev with a crossbody. Rusev landed a Machka Kick after raking Priest’s eye and it was good for a three count. Rusev waved his hand in front of his face.

WINNER: Rusev in 8:00.

-A.J. Styles and Dragon Lee approached Adam Pearce backstage. Styles said they want to keep defending the titles. “Set them up and well knock them down,” he said. Pearce said he will get back to them with challengers. He asked if they have a team name. Styles said no, but Lee said yes. He said “Dragons with Style” in Spanish. Styles said it was pretty long. Maxinne Dupri walked up to Pearce. She said being ready isn’t a feeling, it’s a choice. She told Pearce, “Give me Becky.” Pearce said he was scheduling it for New York at MSG next week. When Pearce walked away, Becky Lynch attacked her and told her she doesn’t stand a chance.

-C.M. Punk made his entrance. [c]

-Punk paced in the ring as fans chanted “C.M. Punk!” He said he knew Logan Paul was a piece of garbage, but he didn’t know how big a piece of garbage. He said he won’t give him a shot at his strap, but he will beat his “broccoli-headed millennial ass.” Logan came out and asked why Punk was so mad at him. He asked if it’s because he’s so much smarter than him. He said he’s smarter than everyone in the arena. When Punk interrupted, Logan told him to shut up. He said his eyes have been opened to a whole new vision. Heyman walked out and stood next to Logan. Bronson Reed and Bron Breakker joined them. Fans barked.

Heyman said Punk is the most unlikable human being he has ever met in his life. He said he has no friends, and it’s not because his friends betray him, but because he betrays his friendships. “You are simply one miserable, rotten bastard,” he said. He said he couldn’t be more unlikable “unless your name was A.J. Lee!” Punk said if Lee was there, she’d leave all four of them in a pool of their own piss and blood. He said he’s the only one there, so come get him. They walked to the ring. Barrett asked what could possibly go well from there. Jey Uso entered the ring. Tessitore said Punk apparently does have a friend. Cody Rhodes’s music then played and he ran to the ring with his belt, making it three-on-three. Fans sang Cody’s lyrics. All six began to brawl. When Punk got his hands on Heyman at ringside, Logan yanked him off of him.

Cody jabbed Bron Breakker with a chair. Punk bashed Reed across his back with a chair. Cody and Jey clotheslined Reed over the top rope. Fans sang “Cody, Cody Rhodes!” (Please stop.) Punk’s music played to end the segment.

(Keller’s Analysis: This was fine. It didn’t fully address when and why Logan went from getting attacked by The Vision to joining them over the course of two-and-a-half hours last week, but the lines are drawn and the battle is on. Hearing Heyman unleash on Punk and defend Logan Paul of all people feels weird, but it’s kinda fun.)

-A clip aired of Lash Legend attacked Alexa Bliss at ringside last Friday on Smackdown leading to Nia Jax pinning Charlotte.

(3) STEPHANIE VAQUER (w/Nikki Bella) vs. RAQUEL RODRIGUEZ (w/Roxanne Perez) – Intercontinental Title match

The bell rang 29 minutes into the hour. Raquel countered a Devil’s Kiss. They cut to a break at 3:00 with Raquel in control. [c]

At 9:00, Perez yanked on Vaquer’s leg at ringside. Nikki broke her grip. Vaquer gave Raquel a Devil’s Kiss followed by a top rope corkscrew moonsault (which she largely overshot) for the win.

WINNER: Vaquer in 11:00 to retain the Intercontinental Title.

-Perez attacked Vaquer afterward. Nikki made the save. Tessitore said it’s great the friendship with Nikki and Vaquer has materialized. Nikki then hit Vaquer with the belt.

(Keller’s Analysis: It’s like storylines are written by A1 just basing every turn on the previous turns and thinking since those turns happened during times of record revenues, it’s okay to keep doing these tropes the same way each time in the same predictable ways, including the lead announcer heavy-handedly selling the friendship right before the turn.)

-The WrestleMania 42 vignette aired with Cody Rhodes, Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, C.M. Punk, and Paul Heyman. Cody looked at the camera and said he was built for this moment.

-Backstage, Pearce approached Punk, Cody, and Jey and asked if they were okay. Punk said he had his teammates and he told Pearce to tell Heyman to get his team. Pearce asked if he was saying what he thought he was saying. Punk then called for William Regal. Regal yelled, “War Games!” Pearce told them to “officially prepare for war.”

-Nakamura’s ring entrance took place. [c]

(4) SHINSUKE NAKAMURA vs. SHEAMUS – Last Time is Now Tournament qualifier

Tessitore called this “a juicy match-up” generated by the random draw. Tessitore and Barrett talked about Sheamus’s history with John Cena. [c]

As Nakamura kicked away at Sheamus, Tessitore said Sheamus invites that kind of punishment. Sheamus got fired up and stood and fired back. Sheamus battered Nakamura with ten forearms to his chest as he bent him back over the top rope. He pounded his chest and played to the crowd. Sheamus recovered during that time and caught Sheamus with a slingblade. Nakamura then quickly went for a Kinsasha. Sheamus ducked and caught Nakamura mid-air with a knee for a two count.

Sheamus seemed to be in control after landing a leaping tornado kick. Sheamus, though, caught him with an out-of-nowhere Brogue Kick for the win. Sheamus helped Nakamura to his feet and offered a handshake. Nakamura congratulated Sheamus afterward. Barrett said he’d have never done that.

WINNER: Sheamus in 11:00 to advance in the tournament.

-Pearce drew more names out of a tumbler for next week’s Raw at MSG: Je’Von Evans vs. Gunther and Solo Sikoa vs. a mystery opponent.

-The ring entrance for Charlotte and Bliss took place. [c]

-They showed fan signs being held up, mostly about Cena.

(5) CHARLOTTE & ALEXA BLISS vs. ASUKA & KAIRI SANE – Women’s Tag Team Title match

The bell rang 10 minutes into the hour. They cut to a break at 3:00. [c]

Charlotte landed a moonsault onto both Asuka and Kairi. Charlotte and Bliss went for a stereo move on both opponents, but Asuka countered a Natural Selection and applied an Asuka Lock. She then leveraged Charlotte’s shoulder’s down. Kairi took out Bliss at ringside as Asuka applied an armbar extension on the mat in the ring. Charlotte stood and leveraged Asuka into a Boston Crab. Asuka countered into a roll-up for a near fall. Asuka then kicked Charlotte in the head. Charlotte countered with a big boot. Charlotte applied the figure-four. Kairi climbed to the top rope. When she leaped, Bliss caught her and gave her a Sister Abigail. Charlotte then bridged into a Figure-Eight. Lash Legend and Nia Jax broke the hold.

Jax and Lash threw Bliss over the barricade at ringside. Kairi then landed an Insane Elbow on Charlotte for the win.

WINNERS: Asuka & Kairi Sane in 11:00 to capture the Women’s Tag Team Titles.

-Jax and Lash faced off with Kairi and Asuka, but then turned and attacked Charlotte. Iyo Sky ran out and landed a springboard dropkick on Asuka and Kairi. She then played to the crowd before fending off Jax going after her. Lash entered and clocked Sky, who took a big bump. Asuka and Kairi then attacked Sky. Rhea Ripley then charged out for the save. Barrett said there’s never been a fight that Ripley didn’t “bloody love.” Ripley tossed Sky onto the other three heels at ringside with a Razor’s Edge over the top rope to the floor.

Ripley, Charlotte, Bliss, and Sky stood together in the ring as the show ended. Ripley shouted, “War Games!” Tessitore said, “Let’s do it!”
