PARKS’S TAKE: WWE is setting up this year’s Money in the Bank matches as a changing of the guard

Intentional or not, WWE is setting up both its Men’s and Women’s Money in the Bank matches to be a changing of the guard.

Usually in these style of matches, WWE evens the playing field with veteran and young talent. These are the types of matches that newer talent can be pushed into as a way to help fans see them as serious contenders either immediately or down the line. They may not win, but locking horns with a spate of established stars in what amounts to a no. 1 contender match on a major PLE can be the start of a bigger push incoming.

This year – so far – WWE has opted to go with almost all new talent. With two slots yet to be announced in each match, there are no former major champions in either bout. Bron Breakker and Je’Von Evans, perhaps not surprisingly, are two of the competitors to qualify on the men’s side. Evans is built for matches like this and it would not surprise me if he sets the record for most MITB Ladder Matches at some point in his career.

Trick Williams is also part of the new guard and is the current United States Champion on Smackdown.

After giving Roman Reigns all he could handle in Mexico City, Penta main evented Raw for the second week in a row in route to a win over Dominik Mysterio and Dragon Lee to make it into this match. WWE looks like they’re trying to take advantage of the momentum he had coming out of that challenge against Reigns.

The women are following the same formula. Sol Ruca, like Evans, will bring her unique brand of athleticism to this match. Jacy Jayne has been a find as a heel since her call-up and, like Trick Williams, enters as United States Champion.

The most recent ascension from NXT, Lola Vice, won her main roster debut, a Triple Threat that placed her in MITB. WWE wasted no time in putting her in a prominent position.

WWE has not been shy about acknowledging their need for new stars. On the canvas that is the MITB Ladder Match, WWE has opted to throw a bunch of young talent in there to paint a picture for the fanbase, one that WWE hopes will go a long way in helping to establish their credentials for a future big push.

As viewers, we’re getting a preview of the stars WWE sees the potential in helping usher the company into the next decade.
