(1) ANDRADE EL IDOLO vs. PAC (w/Marina Shafir) – AEW National Title match
They stared each other down and the crowd fell silent. It built tension but was also awkward. Fans chanted, “How you know? He’s a bastard!” They each tested each other with various signature moves early. They fought at ringside a few minutes in. Andrade had Pac in the corner. Rather than try to win the match and keep his title, he played to the crowd and teased taking off his pants. Pac recovered and overhead tossed Andrade hard into the corner. Fans, in the spirit of the pre-show comedy match, chanted, “Take your pants off!” (There’s no reason to expect fans to take the match seriously at this point.)
Andrade made a comeback and kipped up. He again began to take off his pants. Pac recovered and attacked him. Excalibur said he should be keeping focused. Andrade gave Pac three unreleased vertical suplexes, then clotheslined Pac out of the ring. Andrade, for a third time, went to his buckle and removed his pants. He had trouble getting them past his boots. Some fans cheered. After all that, Andrade landed a leaping tornado dive onto Pac at ringside and landed it. Andrade then strutted to a woman in the front row who flirted back with him. They took a selfie. Shafir came up behind the woman and put her in a sleeper. Pac then attacked Andrade. He leaped off the top rope with a moonsault onto Andrade.
Pac then landed a 450 splash in the ring for a near fall. Andrade made a comeback. Shafir stood on the ring apron. Andrade let himself get distracted for like 20 seconds by that. Pac recovered and rallied with a reverse huracanrana and then applied a Brutalizer, but Andrade leveraged Pac’s shoulders down for a three count.
WINNER: Andrade in 18:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: Andrade playing into removing his pants at the expense of trying to defend his title successfully took me out of the match, no matter what else they did that was strong. The ringside selfie spot in the midst of a title match was also stupid. And then Andrade being completely needlessly preoccupied by Shafir and almost losing because of it made me resent the finish seconds later where he managed to win despite that. I thought this had potential to be great, and it was just sports entertainment silliness overshadowing the sense of sports competition throughout.)
(2) DARBY ALLIN & STEVEN BORDEN vs. KYLE FLETCHER & KEVIN KNIGHT (w/Don Callis)
A fan in the aisle seat held up a sign that said, “TKO fears TK.” Callis joined in on commentary. The bell rang 35 minutes into the hour. Fletcher asked for Borden after the bell rang, so Darby tagged in Borden. They engaged in a collar-and-elbow. Fans chanted, “F—, Don Callis!” Borden threw some big roundhouse punches. Darby knocked an interfering Knight to ringside. Darby and Borden stood together after clearing the ring. Schiavone said Borden said training for pro wrestling was harder than football because he has to keep up with Darby and deal with feedback from his father. Taz emphasized that pro wrestling is unlike anything else.
Darby tagged in. He was focused on Knight, so Fletcher jumped him. Fletcher powerbombed Darby at ringside as a counter to a huracanrana attempt. Fletcher stood on the steps and flexed his arms as Darby writhed in pain at ringside. Fletcher darted Darby into the middle turnbuckle in the ring. The ref didn’t see Darby tag in Borden and disallowed it. Fletcher laughed. Borden tagged in a minute later and hit rapid-fire moves on both Knight and Fletcher. When he dove at Fletcher with a Stinger Splash, Fletcher moved and Borden overshot to the floor. Knight and Fletcher threw Borden into the ringside barricade next. Darby dove at Fletcher and they both hit the announce desk. Knight leaped at Darby at ringside.
Borden and Knight each leaped off top turnbuckles and collided. They immediately called for the doctor. They checked on him. They called for the bell to stop the match. Fletcher asked Callis, “What happened?” He smiled and gloated. Callis jumped up and down excitedly. Borden didn’t move and fans were concerned. They replayed the landing and his head landed hard and his arm flexed resembling a concussion. Taz said you can’t fault the medical team for calling off the match. Callis looked concerned on teh ramp as Knight and Fletcher celebrated.
WINNER: Match Stopped Due To Medical.
-They went to the announcers and stopped showing the ring. As Taz and Excalibur discussed the situation, Schiavone looked at the ring and seemed seriously concerned. The crowd was silent. Fans stood and applauded. The announcers seemed shaken. Excalibur said Borden was now leaving the ringside area. Excalibur complimented the medical team for the call. He said it was an unpopular opinion. (Why did he think it was “an unpopular opinion?” I can’t imagine anyone was upset by the decision.) Excalibur’s voice was trembling a bit as he said they had to transition awkwardly to previewing the next match.
(Keller’s Analysis: That was scary and honestly brought me back to how everyone acted after Owen Hart fell from the catwalk and died. You could tell the announcers and the fans behind them who were visible were as concerned as anyone gets in pro wrestling for injuries. The fact that they didn’t go back to the ring to show Borden getting up to leave made it seem even more ominous.)
-A promo segment aired with Britt Baker and Persephone.
(3) PERSEPHONE (w/Britt Baker) vs. DANI LUNA – TBS Title match
When Luna went for a German suplex from the ring apron, Baker held Persephone’s boot to prevent it. Persephone then gave Luna a Crucifix bomb for the win. Baker was a pest at ringside throughout.
WINNER: Persephone in 14:00 to retain the TBS Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: It was tough to get engaged with the match after the situation with Borden. It’s so rare that a wrestling company doesn’t show a wrestler being helped out of the ring, even on a stretcher. The crowd seemed disengaged and shaken up.)
(4) KAZUCHIKA OKADA vs. TOMMASO CIAMPA – AEW International Title
Ciampa kissed his eight year old daughter at ringside from the front row. (I hope she didn’t have to watch what happened to Borden before watching her father wrestle 20 minutes later.) They stayed in first gear early, with Okada smugly gloating when he got in any offense. They exchanged strikes mid-ring. When Ciampa got the better of him, Okada dropped to ringside to regroup. He made his way slowly into the ring.
Okada eventually taunted Ciampa’s daughter at ringside and gave her the middle finger gesture. The girl looked at her mom wide-eyed, then fired back at Okada with double middle-fingers. Ciampa then took over and tossed Okada around at ringside. Back in the ring, he landed Angel’s Wings for a two count.
Ciampa chopped Okada on the top turnbuckle and then set up a Project Ciampa. Okada broke free and raked Ciampa’s eyes. Don Callis left the commentary table and yelled at the ref on the ring apron. Okada then produced a screw driver and laughed. When he leaped at Ciampa, Ciampa met him with a flying knee to the chin. Okada dropped the screwdriver.
Ciampa rallied and scored another near fall. Fans chanted “AEW! AEW!” Ciampa played to the crowd with Okada on his knees. He lifted Okada and went for a Rainmaker. Okada blocked it. Ciampa elbowed him. Okada rolled up Ciampa for a two count and then hit a short-arm lariat. Ciampa ducked another. Okada dropkicked Ciampa and then gave him a tilt-a-whirl slam followed by The Rainmaker for the win. They cut to Ciampa’s daughter soaking up the loss. Okada snickered at Ciampa’s daughter. She stuck her tongue out at him.
WINNER: Okada in 21:00 to retain the AEW International Title.
(Keller’s Analysis: The crowd seemed to get a kick out of it, but I’m not a fan of kids that young getting directly involved in wrestling angles, even if played for mostly comedy like this and she played her role really well. As for the match, it was very good and the crowd was solidly behind Ciampa, but also enjoyed Okada’s comedic heel actions.)
-They went to ringside. Tony Schiavone said Tony Khan has given him information that Borden is conscious and responsive and has arrived at the hospital for evaluation. He said they heard he is being tended to by a doctor. Taz said, “He’s tough as hell and he’ll get through it.”
(5) THE BRAWLING BIRDS (Jamie Hayter & Alex Windsor) vs. DIVINE DOMINION (Lena Kross & Megan Bayne) – Chicago Street Fight for the AEW Women’s Tag Team Titles
Nigel McGuinness replaced Taz on commentary. They were using kendo sticks, chairs, and tables in the early minutes. Hayter was powerbombed through a table at ringside. Windsor bled from her forehead. Kross and Bayne tried to smash head between two chairs, but she ducked so the chairs crashed into each other. Hayter then rallied with cane shots. Windsor brought a trash can into the ring and bashed Kross and Bayne with it.
All four squared off and swung wildly at each other. All four were down and slow to get up. They went back to brawling with the apparatus. They incorporated a guard rail leaning in the corner as a landing pad for spots. Hayter and Windsor suplexed Kross onto the barricade in the corner.
Kross and Bayne slammed Windsor onto two chairs and scored a near fall, broken up by Hayter. Bayne and Kross then revealed a barbed wire board at ringside and slid it into the ring. Fans chanted, “You sick f—!” Kross poured a bag of thumb tacks onto the canvas. Hayter interupted by hitting Kross with a fist wrapped with a chain and then clotheslined Kross onto the tacks and Windsor scored a three count.
WINNERS: Brawling Birds in 18:00 to retain the AEW Tag Team Titles.
-A commercial announced that Nov. 4 will feature a “Blood & Guts” Dynamite in Jacksonville, Fla. at the Veterans Memorial Arena.
-They went to the announcers at ringside. This time Schiavone had a live mic so the crowd could hear. He said Borden has been responsive and was talking with the doctors about the match. He said he had a CAT scan and if they get another update, they’ll pass it along. Fans chanted, “Steve! Steve!”
(6) THE NEW LEVEL (Austin Creed & Kofi) & SWERVE STRICKLAND (w/Prince Nana) vs. BANDIDO & BRODY KING & “HANGMAN” ADAM PAGE – AEW Trios Title match
The bell rang 9 minutes into the second hour of the PPV portion. Kofi and Bandido had an early exchange that led to a respectful bow by each and cheers and applause by fans. Creed then tagged in against Brody King. Fans loudly chanted “F— Ice!” (Chanting is truly great. But VOTE TOO!) Creed tried to knock Brody down, but Brody barely budged. Fans chanted “New! Le-vel!” Brody took Creed down. Hangman took a shot at Creed at ringside and then Brody put him on a chair and charged at him with a crossbody into the barricade.
Hangman tagged in officially at 5:00. Creed shoved Hangman into his corner and chopped his chest. The announcers pointed out that Nana was trying to calm down Swerve at ringside over Hangman taking a shot at him. Swerve and Hangman brawled at ringside. Kofi tried to calm down Swerve as Brody tried to talk Hangman into backing away and refocusing. Meanwhile, in the ring, Creed gave a charging Bandido a knee to the face. It wasn’t the focus of the director’s camera at the time, so Excalibur called attention to it.
Swerve aggressively stomped away at Bandido. Creed tried to calm Swerve down. Swerve was still worked up. Creed delay-drop vertical suplexed Bandido. Kofi flipped off of Creed’s shoulders with a moonsault onto Bandido for a two count at 9:00. Swerve tagged in, but was preoccupied by Hangman on the ring apron. When Swerve had Bandido grounded, fans chanted “Swerve’s house.”
Brody nailed Creed with a running lariat a few minutes later with everyone else at ringside. He landed a cannonball and made the cover. Swerve interrupted the count by kicking Brody in the head. Swerve leaned over the turnbuckle and called for Hangman. Brody noticed and tagged in Hangman. Swerve and Hangman charged. Hangman got the better of the early exchanges. Swerve benefited when Hangman turned to Creed and clotheslined him. Hangman stood and they went forehead-to-forehead. Then they exchanged more strikes. Creed yanked Hangman out of the ring by his boot. Swerve then landed a running flip onto him.
Brody put Swerve in a sleeper at ringside and then violently tossed him into the barricade. Brody then held Creed bridged from the ring apron and then Hangman landed a shooting star press onto his back. Kofi landed a running double-boot on one side of the ring to Bandido. Everyone ended up down at ringside. Swerve stood first and threw Hangman into the ring at 16:00.
Hangman and Bandido landed blockbuster suplexes off the top rope. Fans chanted, “This is awesome!” Brody and Creed battled mid-ring again. Bandido lifted Kofi and Swerve onto his shoulders. Brody then placed Creed on top and Bandido leaped backwards and suplexed all three at once. Fans chanted “Bandido!” Bandido leaped off the top ringpost onto Creed, Kofi, and Swerve at ringside. Bandido and Brody then worked together to gave back suplexes to both Creed and Kofi.
Brody put Creed in position for a tombestone. Hangman and Bandido dove through the ropes at Kofi and Swerve and then Brody gave Creed an inverted tombstone for a near fall at 20:00. Creed powerbombed Brody a minute later and tagged in Kofi who landed a Boom Drop off the top rope. Swerve then tagged himself in and landed a 450. Kofi and Creed jumped onto Swerve’s back and the ref counted, but Brody still managed to kick out. (So that’s a legal thing, now, huh? All these decades of tag teams thinking only one wrestler could be legal in a standard tag match and only one wrestler could go for a pin or else it wouldn’t be legal.)
Hangman and Swerve faced off again mid-ring and yapped at each other. Kofi kicked Hangman. Bandido slingshot himself at Swerve with a crossbody. Creed gave Bandido a DDT. Brody gave him a lariat. Swerve went after Brody, but Brody gave him a lariat also. Fans applauded. Nana tried to revive Swerve.
Hangman gave Creed a Buckshot Lariat. Bandido gave Swerve a lift-and-drop knee to the chin and then went for a 21 Plex, but Swerve flipped onto his feet and landed his finisher for the win.
WINNERS: Swerve & New Level to retain the AEW Trios Titles.
(Keller’s Analysis: Match of the night so far. The intensity between Hangman and Swerve really stood out. Everyone, though, had a chance to shine in this one. The fans were really into the dynamic with the personalities and the athleticism and high-impact creative spots throughout.)
(7) WILLOW NIGHTINGALE vs. THEKLA
The bell rang 39 minutes into the hour. Willow landed an early senton splash. The announcer gasped as Thekla meant to move but didn’t fully get out of the way and Willow landed on her. After rapid back and forth exchanges early including some leverage two counts with rapid-reversals, Willow hit a Pounce. Willow stayed in control and scored a two count at 2:00. Thekla took over at ringside. Back in the ring, Thekla went after Willow’s injured hand. Willow collapsed and grabbed her hand in pain. Thekla yanked on the fingers on her other hand. McGuinness said she wanted to make good on her promise to leave Willow with two broken hands. Thekla stomped on Willow’s hand.
Willow made a comeback and landed a cannonball off the ring apron at ringside. She rolled Thekla back into the ring. They battled back and forth at ringside. Back in the ring, Willow landed a Death Valley Driver and scored a near fall at 9:00. Thekla stomped Willow’s hand. Then she did the spider vrawl as Willow stood. Thekla the speared her for a near fall. Willow bridged out of it and used her neck strength to held her position. Thekla bridged too and they trash-talked there briefly. Creative. Willow took Thekla down with a lariat. Julia Hart distracted the ref as Skye Blue hit Willow’s hand. The ref scolded Skye. Hart swung the belt at Willow, but Willow ducked and she hit Thekla. Willow knocked Blue off the ring apron and then went for a pin, but scored a two count. Thekla then stomped Willow’s hand again. She followed with a running stomp to the back of Willow’s neck and got the three count.
WINNER: Thekla in 13:00.
(Keller’s Analysis: They fit a lot into that 13 minutes in a good way. There was intensity and sense they were fighting to win, not perform.)
-Mercedes Mone stepped onto the stage to her music. Excalibur plugged their match on Oct. 17 at WrestleDream.
(8) ADAM COPELAND & CHRISTIAN CAGE vs. THE YOUNG BUCKS vs. FTR – Ladders & More Match
After ring introductions, fans chanted “Holy shit!” as all three teams stared at each other. The bell rang 2 minutes into the third hour. Chairs were the star of the opening minutes. Dax and Christian were the first ones bleeding. At 4:00 a ladder got introduced. Soon, Christian leaped onto a crowd and all five others were down at ringside and slow to get up.
The Bucks and FTR engaged in rapid-fire ladder climbs. Nick held Cash prone in a bridge position from the ladder’s second rung and Matt springboard splashed him. The Bucks climbed the ladder and reached for the belts. FTR knocked the ladder over. (It would have been hilarious and awesome if the Bucks got the belts there and won! It would have reset fan expectations for years to come that they could never relax in the early minutes of a big match. There also might’ve been a riot, though.)
FTR whipped Christian into a ladder leaning in the corner. A few minutes later Copeland bridged a ladder in the ring between another ladder and the middle rope. Dax then suplexed Copeland off the top of the ladder onto the bridged ladder. Cash and Christian then leaped onto them with frog splashes from opposite corners.
The Bucks returned to the ring after several minutes at ringside. They lifted Christian onto the ladder and he held himself there as the Bucks beat up Cash. Matt then gave Christian a back stabber. The crowd was popping early but seemed burned out by the 10 minute mark. It is four hours wince the pre-match opening bell, after all.
Matt backdropped Cash over the top rope and he crashed through a table. Nick then leaped off the top rope with a 450 onto Dax on a table. Copeland gave Matt an impaler onto a table at ringside. The table didn’t break. Christian then went after Nick in the ring and delivered a Kill Switch off the ropes and onto a flat ladder. Everyone was down and slow to get up.
Christian climbed a ladder mid-ring as Copeland fended off anyone else with a chair. Stokely Hathaway gave Copeland a low blow from behind. Then he threw powder at the eyes of Christian. Stokely shifted the ladder under the belts and then climbed it himself. He smiled as he grabbed one of the belts. Copeland tipped the ladder over and Stokely crashed through a table at ringside.
FTR gave Copeland a stuff piledriver on the ring apron. The Bucks then gave Dax their leaping stuff piledriver at ringside. The Bucks climbed a tall ladder at ringside and then leaped off with flying stereo elbowdrops on Copeland and Dash. Cash then speared Christian off the ladder.
With three ladders set up center-ring, all three teams climbed to the top and punched away at each other. Christian used a low blow. Copeland speared Matt. Nick was left alone, but then Dax yanked him down and gave him a Shatter Machine onto Cash. All six were down and slow to get up. A “This is awesome!” chant gained steam. Christian and Copeland returned with chairs and bashed Cash and Dax.
Christian and Copeland climbed the ladder. Cash knocked Copeland down and he crotched the top rope (kinda). Cash headbutted Christian. Matt springboarded to Cash and knocked him off the ladder somersault style. Matt and Nick then grabbed Christian by his arms and gave him a BTE Trigger. Then they pulled the belts off the hooks to win.
WINNERS: The Young Bucks in 24:00 to capture the AEW Tag Team Titles.
(Keller’s Analysis: That was a very good ladder match. The crowd felt a bit fatigued at points in the match where you’d have expected more of a reaction, but they came alive in bursts throughout also and were fully engaged for bigger sequences at the end.)
-A vignette aired for the return of Wardlow.
(Keller’s Analysis: I hope he comes back with a slimmer physique after training for durability and flexibility rather than just looking needlessly massive so he doesn’t blow a quad or bicep within ten minutes again.)
-A video package aired on the main event.
(9) WILL OSPREAY vs. JON MOXLEY (w/Danny Garcia, Wheeler Yuta, Marina Shafir) – AEW World Title match
Moxley made his entrance. An elaborate video aired for Ospreay before his entrance with a live violinist playing on the stage interspersed with scenes of “Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag.” They went outside the arena to the parking lot where Ospreay lit a Death Riders flag on fire. He then marched to the arena as fans chanted “Ospreay! Ospreay!” He then looked at the camera and said, “Let’s fucking do this!” His usual theme then played and he made his entrance onto the stage. Justin Roberts did formal ring introductions.
(Keller’s Analysis: That was a Big Star ring entrance. AEW is doing right by Ospreay in this way and it’s making him feel like a bigger star, which is one key way to grow your business with higher attendance and ticket sales and ratings. You need stars, not star-ratings.)
The bell rang 44 minutes into the hour. Mox shoulder-checked Ospreay down, but Ospreay kipped up. They continued to feel each other out with exchanges and then pauses with staredowns to assess and recalibrate. Mox stumbled to ringside. Ospreay flung himself onto Mox and then took it to him at ringside.
Back in the ring, they battled on the top turnbuckle. Mox raked his back, hit his face, and then DDT’d him onto the top turnbuckle. He paced in the ring as Ospreay recovered at ringside. Ospreay came up bleeding. Mox licked Ospreay’s blood off his fingers. Fans chanted, “You sick f—!”
Mox grounded Ospreay at 12:00 They definitely slowed the pace of the match compared to most of the action the previous four hours. Ospreay fought back and landed some deliberately paced chops. Mox fired back. Opsreay dropped him and then landed a quick standing sidetwister splash for a two count. Mox blocked a Styles Clash attempt and applied a cross armbreaker. He shifted to a triangle sleeper attempt. Ospreay escaped, but Mox quickly locked on a sleeper. Mox gave Ospreay a sleeper suplex onto the top of his head and then a Gotch style piledriver for a near fall at 19:00. Ospreay clutched his neck in pain. Excalibur noted the ref was checking on Ospreay to see if he could continue.
Mox stayed on the attack and trash-talked him. Schiavone implored Moxley to just cover him and end it. He added that it was quite the statement when Ospreay burned the Death Riders flag. Mox set up a stomp, but Ospreay stood out of it. He fired up and landed a rolling elbow. He followed with a quick powerbomb for a two count and then a Styles Clash for a near fall at 21:00. Shafir grabbed Ospreay’s boot. When Yuta tried to run into the ring, Speedbsall stopped him, Francesco Akira got into it with Garcia. The ref got knocked off the ring apron. Mox then went for a Paradigm Shift, but Ospreay countered. The ref wasn’t around to count the pin. Yuta attacked Ospreay. Akira gave Yuta a springboard cutter. He fought both Yuta and Garcia with rapid-fire chops. Yuta and Garcia tossed him over the top rope. Speedball entered and kicked Yuta and Garcia to the floor. He followed with a second rope springboard moonsault onto both of them at ringside. He then shoved Shafir down at ringside when she got in his face. Pac hit him with a briefcase.
Pac entered the ring with the case, but Andrade yanked him out of the ring and gave him the spinning back elbow. He then looked at Ospreay and signaled to him. Ospreay nodded. Mox gave Ospreay a Paradigm Shift. Ospreay then took Mox down. Ospreya fired up and signaled for the Hidden Blade. Shafir entered and hit Ospreay with a briefcase as he charged at Mox. Shafir threw the ref into the ring, but he was groggy. Mox crawled over and covered Ospreay. The ref slow-counted and Ospreay lifted his shoulder at two. Shafir attacked the ref. Alex Windsor went after Shafir. Hayter then entered and took down Shafir with a Hart Attack style clothesline. Yuta went after them, but they beat him up. Hayter leaped onto Garcia and Yuta at ringside.
As the women brawled at ringside, Ospreay crawled toward the briefcase. Mox stomped him onto the briefcase, though. Mox angrily yelled at Ospreay that he gave him everything he had. Mox looed around at the crowd whole clutching the briefcase. He then cvried as if he couldn’t finish Ospreay. He kneeled and then hit Ospreay in the skull and made the cover. A fresh ref entered and counted, but Ospreay kicked out. “My god, what a fighter,” said Schiavone. Mox hit a second and a third Paradigm Shift and a Death Rider for another near fall. Excalibur seemed resigned to the loss. Mox then applied a Bulldog Choke. Ospreay’s eyes were rolling back. The ref lifted his arm, but Ospreay held it up. He then bit Mox’s forearm. He gnawed on the skin and stretched it until Mox let go. Mox went for a sleeper, but Ospreay slipped out and hit a Hidden Blade and then a Storm Breaker for a near fall at 31:00.
Ospreay looked to the crowd as Schiavone asked, “What’s it gonna take!?” Ospreay took off his elbow pad. Nigel noted the teeth bite mark in the forearm of Moxley. Ospreay waited for Mox to stand. Mox laughed and sat up and realized what was coming. He turned and absorbed the Hidden Blade. Ospreay got the three count. Excalibur said Ospreay wanted Mox to know what was coming and there was nothing hidden about that blade.
WINNER: Ospreay in 33:00 to retain the AEW Title.
-As Ospreay celebrated to his music, Mox stood and grabbed the title belt. Ospreay’s music stopped. A hush fell over the crowd. Mox presented Ospreay with the belt. Fans applauded. Mox offered a handshae. Ospreay accepted it. Mox dropped down and rolled out of the ring. Ospreay’s music played again. Excalibur noted another moment of respect earned between them.
(Keller’s Analysis: A very different match than anything else on the show, starting more deliberate and methodical but still intense, and then tons of interference and shenanigans followed by the usual AEW main event series of signature moves and kickouts and finally the storyline-drenched drama of the dynamic between mentor Mox and protege Ospreay leading to the win.)
